He was the only kid in the Kokiri Forest who didn't have a fairy, and because of that, he was getting bullied by everyone else except Saria. In Ocarina of Time, in Link's house, he has a drawing of him fighting a giant monster with a fairy by his side. All his life he dreamed of having a fairy, and he finally got one.

Actually what happened: There was a war (possibly the one where the Twili became banished to the Twilight Realm) and Link's dad was fighting. Link's mother went to kokiri forest with Link and gave him to the great deku tree. Link's mom then died. Saria raised Link until he could go around on his own. The end.
