The relay went out on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee and my dad was too lazy to fix it so we put a light switch on the front. I hate the sound of the 4.0 reving but damn they are good engines. Well not 2000 on up but lol.
@GmTruckCarLove Hahaha, we were going to do that too because we couldn't find the prob...it was actually a bad wiring job..some bare wires kept touching each other and sparking and killing the new relay after a few weeks. You know, I used to hate the revving of the 4.0 too, but I've been driving my grandpa's 2001 chevy malibu with the v6 and man the 4.0 was just music to my ears. Still sounds shitty at above 3k rpms, but I love the sound before that! btw, the 4.0 engines btwn 1994-2004 are same.
@drippinblood28 Doing so caused a leak of coolant into the oil causing engine failure without any warning. Thus killing the 4.0's untarnished history.
@GmTruckCarLove never had that problem :) my mother though who doesn't know much about cars ran it so hot that the head gasket blew around 100k. She didn't notice anything until smoke started coming out of the car then pulled over. The cause was just a bad water pump....ughhhh but we got it fixed for like $500 only luckily. Honestly though, interior quality of the 1999-2004 jeep especially higher end models (probably just me) is great. Good amount of options and very nice leather
@drippinblood28 They are quite nice during that year. I do like the 1999 upto present though as well. Yes they went hard dash in 2005 but its a good feel to it. lol
@GmTruckCarLove no, no trust me this had nothing to do with the intake problem. ALL head gaskets break under extreme pressure and heat...it broke because the car overheated really badly
@drippinblood28 I never broke a single thing on my 4.0. I am saying that after 2000 they revamped the intake to help with emissions. They will just crack without warning and leak coolant into the oil. I have googled the problem in the past but I have not seen enough evadance to back up the clam of them being shit. Mine has 90K and no engine problems at all.
@GmTruckCarLove ohh, i'm glad i have the 1999 then :) I really hate the hard dash for 2005....so ugly and plasticy and blehhh, but jeep won my heart over with the srt8 version so i guess it's alright and the new 2012 jeep srt8 is even sexier so...which cars do you own then?
@drippinblood28 If you feel the dash its nice. Its not that echo making hallow shit like the Tundra and 2002 to 2005 Rams have. Its nice and solid feeling. I have a 95 Grand marquis, 88 Dodge Ram D250 and a 2006 Commander right now. Just to clarafy I do think the 4.0 does have a bad problem after 2000. I was saying I don't trust the head problem on the 4.7. lol Sometimes I don't get my point through.
@drippinblood28 Doing so caused a leak of coolant into the oil causing engine failure withwout any warning. thus killing the 4.0's untarnished history. than you said "i live the steering wheel... so soft and plush :D' Kinda out of place lol
@GmTruckCarLove yeah, i know but the leather steering wheel is thebest part about it :P jkkk....i haven't heard any problems of this problem where coolant leaked into the oil
@drippinblood28 Google it. It just killed the reliblity factor of the 4.0. Trust me I love my 4.0's though. the said fan switch on the front that I put in, well people would turn it off every now and again causing it to overheat like never known a car could. The needle was past the top heat mark on the temp gauge and the oil pressure was down to the dangerous. It was knocking and cladding before we noticed that the engine was overheating like that. That happened twice and it still ran fine. lol
@GmTruckCarLove hmmm...well those 4.0's run forever yeah. they definitely do not like those high revs and overheat like crazy so i installed a 180 thermostat just to help out cuz it gets hot here sometimes
@drippinblood28 I never had problems with my GC overheating if the fan was on. I am in Kansas and during the summer we will see 110 days for months non stop. You may think about flushing your rad. I have never had problems from my Commander ether. The 04 Ram and 95 Pontiac Grand Am would like crazy though. :/
@GmTruckCarLove Yeah, these newer 4.0s were pretty crappy, I think Coolant leaked into mine causing engine falure. Seems to be a rather common issues with the newer 4.0's the loggest I've ever heard one last was 258k but most of the newer 4.0's I've heard blow up/fail before 200k. I heard ppl with old ones get 300+k out of them.
well for me it was not so easey my fan was dead and trying to replace it was like hell
i gave up trying to remove the housing the screws are difficult to remove i got 3 out and could not remove the third so now i will have to see my mechinic who last charge me $435
Oh yes the cooling fans were trouble in these. My dad got a 99 Cherokee at auction a few years back to resell, & I was so amazed the the previous own actually went thru the trouble of adding a clutch fan to it. Well, the fan was more direct because when you accelerated the damn thing, it sounded like a roaring Freightliner LOL..
More often than not, its that fan relay. Goes out often- some say due to it being a Solid State electrical device and the heat kills them. They are in a bad place. They are a $45 part- just take the headlight on pass. side out and cut a 2"x3" square to get the old one out. Two screws and plug it in- fan will work.
@manonhill12 there are really only a couple of solutions: temperature sensor, fan relay, the fan itself, or the fan fuse. Unfortunately, mine is a wiring problem that keeps busting the relay and I'm not an electrician by any means, so it needs to get fixed
@manonhill12 turns out that the problem was a wiring problem. the wires were so chafed near the connection to the fan that they began to touch each other and spark. For some reason i got lucky when testing the fan and they didn't touch
@drippinblood28 it's not bad at all. The problem i had in this video was actually due to me not correctly replacing the fan lol. I replaced it about a year back! Btw, the fan was about $50 and it should take about an hour to install if you do it yourself or maybe 20 minutes if you're a mechanic. Do it yourself! I can help you out cuz i did it!

@drippinblood28 After 2000 they changed the intake. Look it up.
GmTruckCarLove 4 months ago
@GmTruckCarLove sorry, i meant they used the 4.0 until 2004. Yeah, i know they changed the intake manifold in 1999 which bumped up hp a tiny bit
