Myself, I ended taking out the sniper by seeing where the beam came from, then finding a bit of cover and just WAILING on him with cannon shots...one of my favorite moments when I heard him scream as he was killed! Everything else was basic 'Dodge and fire'!
The brains scare the crap out of me. Their just so freaking CREEPY!

OMG, I could never get past the 'kill the screamers' bit becoz of those damn annoying sharpshooter. Now I can thx to your guide =]
