I think that U.S./UN forces did not pushed into Baghdad after the liberation of Kuwait in 1991 because many middle eastern countries who are part of the UN-coalition pressured U.S. President Bush Sr that it would created a civil war between religious Islamic factions if we took down the Iraqi government back then. Who knows whether going in would create a civil war or not. Cheney was pretty correct that going into Iraq would create an instability within the Persian Gulf region.

No one has explained how they think the US is making money on this either. We import less now than we did before the war, and on top of that, Iraq only accounts for 2% of our oil. We get as much oil from the UK as Iraq.

Saddam supported terror but not al Qaeda.
Lots of countries support terror or turn a blind eye to it. The USA, for example, did both in the 80s, ignoring IRA activity and backing the Contra terrorists.

You do realise that the Reagan admin took Saddam off the list of countries supporting terrorism back in '82, specifically to allow NATO countries & other US proxies to arm & to supply Saddam with Chemical precursors for making WMD.
American firms also sent Chemicals via Europe & other places. In fact, I have a link to a declassified State Dept. cable that shows that 22,000 lbs of Phosphorus fluoride was on it's way to Iraq from the US via Germany.
