You don't need to be able to sing as many octaves as possible if that's not your goal as an artist. It is important for people like Mariah and Whitney, because that's how they're known. Singing about love songs, Madonna is an entirely different kind of artist. It's a bit strange that some people still don't seem to get the difference.
