sucks. the well armoured knight wouldnt give a shit about the viking one-hand-weapons and Jesus would get stabbed in the face easily. it's not full contact - it's not good
does this mean i could possibly turn up and fight with almost NO armour? its just my resources are a tad scarce at the moment but i have plentyy of poles lying around i can make into mock spears.
@elgostine The vast majority of people would not have had access to any form of amour. Both metal (for chainmail etc) and cloth or leather (for padded armour) were expensive and only the richest could afford real armour.
@elgostine Absolutely not! All that you really *need* is a good pair of gloves to protect your hands. Most of the people I fight on a regular basis don't have any more that this (and a weapon of course)
If you're planning on making +using mock spears just a few pointers:
ALWAYS keep the back hand higher than the front one and don't aim above the shoulders
It's better to stab past your target then slap them with the spear
Thick leather (or I imagine foam) makes a decent padded end
@Oddthetall ^-^ im looking forward to this. ill probably strap a crude forarm shield ontomy left arm so im not totally defenceless when i drop the spear and reach for my crude peasent-blade thingy (sort of a machete like thing i could REASONABLY see a peasent making.
@elgostine Sorry - misread - if you're meaning turn up to the event and fight with no training then it's not possible. It actually takes a fair amount (several months-a year) to be really safe with re-enactment fighting.
The advice I was giving was if you wanted to mess around with friends - if you're interested in doing events I'd advise joining a local re-enactment group. If you live around Fife then you could try the Knights of Monymusk or the local branch or Regia Anglorum
@Oddthetall i have SOME training in polarms, just not in reenactment circles. im quite well aquainted with quaterstaff techniqes which i think i can reasonably apply to using a spear.i just hope that, uon joining a (australian) society, i dont have to start with a sword.

It is hard to form a shield wall when none of your men have shields.
