You are right Rachel, on TV they show kitchens where people actually do not work, just look at it. Yes you will have flower vases on counters if there is no work being done on counters. I am a retired widower and my kitchen looks like a laboratory. Here in Nashville I went to a music industry home, there was nothing in the house that you could work with.

How to you get your husband and kids to keep fridge items in particular spots? id need OCD as much as id have to run behind my family. I cook from scratch 5-6 days a wk for me this just wouldnt work but for a new mom maybe but id still move the food storage thats just not smart.

You have some really good ideas.  Putting all your baking things in a tub on the shelf, so they're together and you don't have to dig through your shelf for individual items--great idea. Same with the 'fridge.

Asinthedays - yes, you can make yogurt from powdered milk. Just mix up the milk as usual.  I buy organic powdered milk from Azure standard, which is a food co-op. You can find them easily with a search. It comes out to 2.30 per gallon, but they have the non-organic as well for cheaper.
