Did you guys realise, the Fortress Town is the smallest in all 9 Towns. And I think the Tower Town is the 2nd smallest. And the Necropolis is the biggest town. Oh, I love Heroes 3
This game had just SO much style. Music, Graphic Design, Gameplay, everything was just outstanding. I have never seen anything that was able to match up with the atmosphere of this game, just the way the music is made is something i have barely heard in any other game after this. Sure, you have the WoW Soundtrack, Zelda, all those great tracks. But this had something special.. something... truly magical.
@jawohlmann If you're in your early twenties, the reason you think this is because you played this game during your "golden" years so to speak. You'll never experience this again :P
@AsumDude94 Two-tile moat, a lot of two-tile creatures (could be good or bad depending on how you use them), Gorgons shred 7th tier units, Hydras are often very underestimated, and their most demanding resource is wood. They're not that bad.
A decent way to play Fortress is to use a lot of buff/debuff/mobility spells on a Might hero. This helps their lack of ranged/flying power, which is pretty much their only weakness. I tend to use Gerwulf since the Ballista is very helpful for this town.
@fortyblinks yes, this is a must for this town to be decent, imagine doing this to a much better town like castle or dungeon. foretress is always gonne be the worst town. one thing is that the creatures looks awsome.. :)
@fortyblinks I've never had an issue with mighty gorgons, and basic mobility spells for might heroes are the same for all aligments heroes. A few 7th tier units in an attack, isn't bad, but it doesn't compensate for their defensive and sluggish setup. The problem was that all the defense I'd ever need, could be gained from a hero with Armorer specialty. Mephal from Rampart is the most broken combo I've used, nephela of Tower a close second, but armorer from fortress wasn't worth it.

Fortress is the cheapest town, so they get the quickest advantage, especially in expert/impossible, and small maps. and as long as you have expert tactics, water magic (teleport) and air magic (haste) (them Hydras!) you're going to find that very very few can actually defeat you in battle. no other town is even half as good at taking down high level monsters as Fortress is. especially Dragon Flies and Mighty Gorgons who are pretty much the best in their respective tiers.
Heroes 6 doesnt even have town screens. Fuck you, heroes 6, ima play this instead. WHOS FUCKING RETARDED IDEA WAS IT TO TAKE AWAY HALF THE FUN OF HEROES GAMES?
hoard the gorgons to maximize death stare,get Tazar,get tactics or haste spell and balistics.Besides,fortress heroes get pathfinding very easy,so u won't have any kind of problems with the movement on the map.

Fortress is the best faction in Heroes 3. They don't care about all the morality stuff, they just wanna hang out in the jungle and play in the trees but if anyone gets in their way then they are crushed under the feet of an angry hydra!
I still remember when I was a kid I made a crude bow and pretended to be a Lizard warrior, fighting off my elvish brother and his necromancer friend. To this day fortress still remains my favourite faction.

Honestly does anybody also agree that Berserker Flies when in the beginning of the game just dominate the game? They have attack/return/no retal and cast berserk.

The perfect balance among the 8 factions in HOMM3 means each one has their own strength. Fortress is the best in defense: hydra (multiple attacks+ no retaliation), basilisk, and gordon are slow, grail gives 10 defense to guarding heroes. It's why I never start with this town. But once I can take a well-built Fortress from the computer, it will end up wasting a much bigger army without wining the town back (even highest difficulty level).
here in hungary, in most competitions necropolis and confulx is banned along with dimension door/town portal and sometimes armageddon[dracageddon tactic]
fortress is considered as a handicap, as much as i love it[best looking town, awesome creatures, great heroes], the magic guild is limited, at siege, they are the worst and in sod they weren't tuned up enough

@RNorthex of course, nothing is perfect, just a way of saying. I have to admit that I never play against a human. At the beginning (like 10 yrs ago), I played all factions (no serious tactics, just play, u know) at the normal level. My favorites were Dungeon>Tower>Castle>Inferno. Then things got boring soon. And my habit was to spend 6-7 hours playing XL or L size maps at the impossible level. Almost all the times, I had to choose Castle: you can get tier 7 without spending too much ore and wood
@RNorthex So Might is more important than Magic for me because the game doesn't take long enough for high level magic becomes crucial, or even available. I usually just get expert air or/and earth to cast mass haste/ slow/ shield/stone skin... As I say, I rarely start with Necropolis though I know that expert necromancer can make it ridiculously tough to beat. I don't include Conflux in my first comment because I feel it breaks the balance (some says it's too weak, others say too strong).

one of my favoutires is jeddite from dungeon with red dragon as the only non-upgraded creature, with it, expert intelligence and mana vortex, you could basically win any battle without losses[unless inhibition or recanters is in effect] which would make an invincible army
@FriendOfTheStar in addition expert frenzy, prayer, implosion, chainlightning and other goodies make mages extremely powerful
the fact that some good players go with might heroes, is because they don't want to rely on mage guild, or the map is large enough where achivin 10+level is easy, after which they develop magic skills rather than atk/def
if it's small, ppl always go with mage to be able to collect as many things they can early on by using attack based magic
umm, achieving 10 + level is easy on small. magic hero is sweet on big (dimension door, town portal...), but i like might on small maps when game ends in 3 weeks and u can't build magic

People who say it's weak - just don't know how to play it. (or they just play on low difficulties) It is on higher difficulties where the game is balanced.
@NEC234 Basilisks, Gorgons, and Knolls are the only good units for their respective levels. The heroes are pretty mediocre, and the Fortress, more than just about every other castle, really benefits from magic, which is restricted by its mage guild limit. That said, flies can be a huge advantage in the early game.
@DokkyDok that's true, their speed is only bested by lvl7's i think? and when your creatures are faster you hero can walk further, or was that another game?
@NEC234 If I recall correctly; your slowest unit determines the hero's speed (along with other factors, of course). So yeah, they make great units for your secondary heroes in the early game. :) I stand by what I said though; this castle is weak overall, but to be fair, it is hard to balance nine unique factions. All things considered, the game designers did quite well.
I played EVERY heroes might and magic game and its expansion, my first was 3 and its my top favorite game of all time i spend 150+ on multiplayer with my buddies, 1 and 2 are nice but they didnt age well because of 3, 4 is plain boring to me, i dont like the grapichs, sound or factions, 5 is a mixed bag, i like the fighting more and the factions are ok, but i wish they would stop trying to make it look like lord of the rings.

@SuckMyCurry But they can be extremely powerful in the long run because of one reason: Their focus on defense. If you manage to get a fortress battlehero to a high lvl, his defense will become so high as to reduce enemy damage by 60%-70%. Me and my bro once played a long game with him as Fortress. The eventual epic battle resulted in him utterly decimating all of my forces except for my Behemoth's, with ignored his defense and killed him :P
@Krogoth512 Or more likely : 5 people were fully buffed and faced 5 dragon flies in a battle. They started running after being bitten, but 5 Wyverns caught up to them and poisoned them. After that they couldn't move of fear, because they saw a Mighty Gorgon and then they accidentally looked in the eyes of a Basilisk. Incidentally their statues were around a Chaos Hydra...

@FriendOfTheStar in addition expert frenzy, prayer, implosion, chainlightning and other goodies make mages extremely powerful
the fact that some good players go with might heroes, is because they don't want to rely on mage guild, or the map is large enough where achivin 10+level is easy, after which they develop magic skills rather than atk/def
if it's small, ppl always go with mage to be able to collect as many things they can early on by using attack based magic

umm, achieving 10 + level is easy on small. magic hero is sweet on big (dimension door, town portal...), but i like might on small maps when game ends in 3 weeks and u can't build magic

People who say it's weak - just don't know how to play it. (or they just play on low difficulties) It is on higher difficulties where the game is balanced.

@DokkyDok awful? ok its not the best castle in the game but the lizards, basilisks and the gorgons make a strong force. wyvern is too weak though.

@NEC234 Basilisks, Gorgons, and Knolls are the only good units for their respective levels. The heroes are pretty mediocre, and the Fortress, more than just about every other castle, really benefits from magic, which is restricted by its mage guild limit. That said, flies can be a huge advantage in the early game.

@NEC234 If I recall correctly; your slowest unit determines the hero's speed (along with other factors, of course). So yeah, they make great units for your secondary heroes in the early game. :) I stand by what I said though; this castle is weak overall, but to be fair, it is hard to balance nine unique factions. All things considered, the game designers did quite well.

I played EVERY heroes might and magic game and its expansion, my first was 3 and its my top favorite game of all time i spend 150+ on multiplayer with my buddies, 1 and 2 are nice but they didnt age well because of 3, 4 is plain boring to me, i dont like the grapichs, sound or factions, 5 is a mixed bag, i like the fighting more and the factions are ok, but i wish they would stop trying to make it look like lord of the rings.

0:40 nostalgia strapped a bomb and throw me from a flaming space shuttle into earth's orbit then i hit the ground exploded sending the earth 45 degree to the left
havent heard this for probably 6 or 7 fucking years then suddenly clicked on this and it took me so far i dont wanna go back

@SuckMyCurry But they can be extremely powerful in the long run because of one reason: Their focus on defense. If you manage to get a fortress battlehero to a high lvl, his defense will become so high as to reduce enemy damage by 60%-70%. Me and my bro once played a long game with him as Fortress. The eventual epic battle resulted in him utterly decimating all of my forces except for my Behemoth's, with ignored his defense and killed him :P

@Krogoth512 Or more likely : 5 people were fully buffed and faced 5 dragon flies in a battle. They started running after being bitten, but 5 Wyverns caught up to them and poisoned them. After that they couldn't move of fear, because they saw a Mighty Gorgon and then they accidentally looked in the eyes of a Basilisk. Incidentally their statues were around a Chaos Hydra...
