If football/soccer was America's main sport as it is in most other countries I think we would do fine, if not dominate. Our concentration is mostly on NFL which is why it has advanced so much.

If football/soccer was America's main sport as it is in most other countries I think we would do fine, if not dominate. Our concentration is mostly on NFL which is why it has advanced so much.

@xzation I totally agree. In all of the sports that the United States focuses the most on(American Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, Tennis, Golf), the United States is either really good at it or just flat-out dominates it.
If the United States focused more on football/soccer(like it did in the 20's and 30's. Believe it or not, soccer was the 2nd most popular sport in the U.S. at the time), I believe we could be one of the best football nations in the world.

Baseball, i can name many countries, basketball is an olympic sport, Hockey didn't originate in the US so how can we be the only country who plays it? We also do pretty good at the olympics what are you smoking? Swimming, Gymnastics, speed skating, Track and Field, etc. All sports require skill, Even table tennis! Most americans don't watch soccer. Being a nation of 300+ inhabitants that would be almost impossible, especially with four of the top five major pro sports leagues in the world playing year round. Just about 20 % of our population does. Enough to sustain a profitable and successful league. At this moment, our average MLS stadium attendance is equal or superior of several leagues, including the brasilerao and Englands' Championship. Dude, we'll dominate this sport at no time. Is in our genes.

Because there's not enough time for ad breaks, the rules are set in stone by an international body which means you can't add 'bonus ball round' or the shit like that the you guys do to your sports, and because you don't currently dominate it, so the attraction isn't there. And considering the MLS has 18 teams from 2 huge countries, to compare to the Championship is nonsense

With European sport you get the sense that even if it wasn't being filmed then it would still be happening (albeit in a smaller stadium!), but American sport just all seems like WWE, all about the show but not quite enough focus on the actual sport. Leagues shouldn't be defined by anything except the quality of sport being played in them, so i don't think gridiron football could ever be considered

@vivelavidarocka that is such a depressingly American attitude that you have to quantify everything in terms of money. Those leagues rake in so much money because they're in America, and therefore run purely for profit with no deference to the purity of sport. Everything is merchandising and sponsorship and tie-ins and product placement etc etc. 20% of 300 million is 60million, the population of the UK, where there are 92 professional football teams, of which 24 play in the Championship.

Demographics predict it that way. Latino and later eastern european migrations will push the popularity of the sport to make it our #4 in the next 5 -7 years. Plus not everybody likes football, so it's more like 24 teams from 20 million people, as opposed to 18 from 60. But fair enough I see your point, it's not so much insecurity cos when you put money aside and compare the quality of the leagues there's no competition at all, but your national team's pretty good, and you've got some great players
