I was shoot down helping a brother to safety

    I’ll heal again someday

  • The Soldier

    I was a young soldier

In a Humvee I spent my time

  • @SmedleyDouwright Merle Haggard didn't sing in the Highwaymen. He and Willie Nelson did a duet together seperately, but the Highwaymen was strictly Willie, Waylon, Kris, and Johnny.

  • I just finished an Engish paper we had to write. my topic? Outlaw Country Music. This song inspired me to do so:)

  • Funny how this song was turned into a political dispute. Guess the things that needs to be talked about always find a forum. Anyways... This song is about the journey of the spirit- not about Obama, free healthcare or any nation. Good songs go beyond the earthly disputes, it starts off as a highwayman and end up as a captain of a starship...

  • @Dimothian: Agreed. I can live with the patriotic soldier stuff, but ignorant comments about "liberal governments" just piss me off. Let the song be a song.

  • i was a made man, through death valley i did run.

gun and blade at my side.

many a gangster lost their life to my skill.

many a lawman shed his life blood in my sight.

the bastards shot me in the spring of 45.

but ill shoot back again, and again, and again.

  • i was a prop player

    i tackled many big guys

broke leg to one of them

    now i have back injury

    i cant walk ..

    but i will return !

  • I was a game designer, Along the internet I did reside,

With code and linux by my side

Many a young tester lost their marbles to my trade

Many a youngster gave their money for my game

The bastards bought me out in the spring of '95

    But I am still alive

  • I was a Militia Man, the Day our Freedom died, with my Constitution, Rifle and Pistol by my side. Many Police State Corrupt Public Servants ran and hide.We hung the Bastards after the Economic slide. A place called Boulderado Colorado. I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below they buried me in that great Tomb that knows no sound. But I am still around.

  • I was a liberal man, in a prius did I ride, Obama sticker by my side

Many cities were occupied becuase Im jealous and smoke dope, Many were forced to pay universal healthcare as a result of my vote.

The country failed in the fall of 2012, I should be put in jail

  • @zackwords: Aw, muffin...healthcare for everyone? That's just a shame, that is. Poor people *should* be sick and die, I'm guessing?

  • @ashengrail Sounds good on paper, will it really help them? or will it lower the quality of healthcare? will a welfare state be able to support itself(what happens to the poor folk if it cant?)? does making the private sector a government operation hurt the economy? when a large portion of the country disagrees with the bill, is it right to enact it? I believe the central government should smaller...

  • @zackwords: ask a sick man or woman if he/she wants to be healthy. If you were sick and poor, would you want to be better? Often, short-term fixes are necessary to keep people from suffering and dying until something bigger can be put in place.

Look at countries in Northern Europe. They seem to be managing fine as what you derogatorily call "welfare states". They generally have lower poverty levels and higher standards of health care. It works.

  • @ashengrail I have lived in poverty, of course I would want to be better, but I don't want to be dependent on the government, ask not what the government can do for you ask what you can do for your government. we have a large country at hand, the same principles that may "work" for small european countries within a confederation may not work here, maybe if the states were given more freedom with in the boundaries of these United States and tasked with the welfare of its citizens it could work

  • @zackwords: you said it yourself: small countries in a confederation, much like states in a larger country. One can continue to work towards one's own goals while getting short-term help from the government. All in all, I'm not offended by your beliefs; I'm just offended by your original reworking of the song to bash "liberal governments".

  • @ashengrail dude, seriously, im poor, and im sick. but guess what, i may want to be better, but i think zack is right. and i think you're fighting a losing battle. i dont want to depend on our govment, not after what it has been doing to me and many of my friends, and most of the people i dont even know. short term fixes? i dont wish to rely on something that will break soon, i think the govment needs to hurry up and get to work on doing stuff that could help, thats no lie. i dont agree with you

  • @acehard40: I mean the real poor; the poor too poor to check the internet. You don't want to depend on a government that screwed you, but what about on a government that could actually help?

  • @ashengrail dude, im at the goddanged library i can barely find the time to go to the library. and there aint no way a govment would want to help.trust me, i know, they aint helping no one, they just using small stuff to make you think they will help

  • I was a pimpin' man, in a hummer limo did i ride, Gunz n' hoes at my side

  • i was a weed smoker, my bowl was always wide

Where fire and steel did collide,

A place called jail were we had to mine for coal,

my finger slipped and fell off the strike hole

They buried me in ground were this great herb was found

But I am still around..I'll always be around..and around and around and

    around and around

  • how come the guitarist sounds like mark knopfler but it doesnt say anywhere he did it but coincidentaly he did a cover of this with jimmy webb i think

  • the second top comment is better

  • I am a huge fan of all these artists but when JR Cash starts the singing the song really comes alive. We'll never see a tale teller like Johnny Cash again, I'm just glad I got to shook his hand before he passed. Words can not descripe the respect I have for him.

  • I was a broke ass dude, along the public transportation I did ride, with less then a dollar by my side.
