  • the "dink" noise you hear at 0:19 is the sound of the vinyl being dropped clumsily into the sleeve, the perfact way to cause a seam split - the most ugly record sleeve tear that any vaguely fussy record nerd totally hates. seam splits are so ugly!

    sincerely , a record nerd

  • People who get mad about hipsters have serious self-esteem issues. Seriously, who cares what they think of your taste in music, or what you think of theirs? Like what you like!

  • @ELGELGELG

You sir/maam, are truly scholarly and I don't mean that as a jest.

  • labeling people is demeaning and doesn't do anything but promote controversy. but if you self label yourself a hipster it would seem to me that you need comfort in numbers. if nobody liked animal collective, could you, would you? Neutral milk hotel is horrid , I mean the guy can't even record a guitar without it clipping. dude it was intentional. yep alright. but if it does touch at some personal level, good for you. i mean it. good for you. but let it be real. otherwise you only fool yourself.

  • @ThennyDlux cool story

  • apparently i was a hipster before it was cool

  • Ok, so, here's my opinion on "hipsters". Get mad if you want, I don't really care. Hipster isn't a real thing. It's something you call someone who likes music you don't like. It's someone who dresses in a way that annoys you. It's someone who enjoys movies you haven't seen or don't like. It is a general insult, and has no actual manifestation. How do I know this? Because no one's definition of hipster is the same. It's like the word "jerk" or "douche." No actual meaning. So, quit fuckingbitching

  • There is other music beside Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. But the instant you know remotely anything about music scratching below the surface you're an elitist? I own a record store, and I can't stand 90% of the crap people buy, but it's their preference so whatever. I'm not going to look down on them for what they like. People like what they like. This is a movie. AKA fiction. I and my other friends who run record stores around my state are incredibly helpful & nice. I'm a snob, but in private.

  • Seriously, being a music lover and a kind of scholar of it (which many of us are) because we feel passionate about it does not make us hipsters.

  • @TheParanoidAndroid1 No, it makes someone a hipster when they are a snob about it, or are in fact not scholarly at all but just close minded and pretentious.

  • @Feuyaer it is the frustration of the hipster of so many people's inability to see things clearly...that what a hipster describes and lives is that of irony that many so called hipsters do not themselves understand. the mainstream notion that people are snobs because they hate those who don't get it is the very thing that has kept understanding from its own victory. hipsters want you to know why they love or hate something. don't hate a hipster...love them for what you have yet to learn

  • You posers go brush up on your Spacemen 3/Spectrum/Spiritualized then we can talk. Animal Collective, give me F'in break. Oh, and Brian Jonestown Massacre, you fools.

  • See, this is was gets me: the description says "...apparently they existed back then too." Yes, they existed, in fact, the "hipster" thing is just the record store loving/Indie Rock thing rehashed, only back then IT MEANT MORE THAN JUST WEARING A UNIFORM. Now, anyone can wear the uniform and they are hip; back then, the uniform came second, and what really mattered was you knew where/how to collect the relevant culture. Today, its all posers. I've been a hipster since 1983!

  • my record shop there never going to get anything for me.Just got Nine inch nails album thats really hard to get .I love this because its true.Belle and Sebastion o yes).

  • Whatever. I was a hipster before it was cool.

  • Dude there's snobbery like this in every decade and in every culture. In every culture, subculture, and counterculture, there are people who are chill and then there are condescending dicks. Accept it and don't get butt hurt about it.

  • uh oh, hipster hating has become fashionable.. better start hating hipster haters.

  • @earsuboat The Hipsters will start listening to Arcade Fire solely for the purpose of not being labeled a hipster. Confused? Let me explain. Usually hipsters would make fun of the NOW mainstream Arcade Fire, but REAL Hipsters don't want to to be labled as Hipsters because "Hipsterism" has become TOO popular and mainstream. Because Arcade Fire is now part of the mainstream, to avoid being labeled a Hipster they will listen to Arcade Fire. Oh the IRONY(The Irony that they often worked towards).

  • The whole idea of hating on people because they think they're better than others is just self defeating. You think that you're better than them because they think they're better than everyone else. Should the cycle continue? Maybe someone else should make up a name for you guys and make fun of you because you think you're better. I'm just saying, it seems cheap to build a straw man to tear down. And don't stereotype people either, it shows you have little understanding of human complexity.

  • @samsyt "The whole idea of hating on people because they think they're better than others is just self defeating."

It's not the "thinking" they are better. It's the treating other people like they are better that gives hipsters the snotty/snooty/snobby/elitist stereotype. I can't tell you how many times I've been out to a bar or party and tried to engage some hipsters in conversation and got the lukewarm "who are you and why are you talking to us" vibe.

    What's cool/"deck" about that?

  • a true hipster only listens to music of their own creation, then plays it for unsuspecting visitors and claims it to be some obscure artist that very few people have ever heard of.

  • Animal Collective are a credible band on all accounts. "Vampy weeks pashy pits and MGMT" are all lousy to decent, and will fade away in the shadows of AC. It's not hip to listen to Animal Collective for me, it's invigorating. It makes me feels excited about art, humanity, technology, fresh air, camping, and lots of stuff. Other hipster bands are just party noise.

  • Whoever posted this description needs to go back to commiting hate crimes and playing football. Sorry we all can't be philistine queens.

  • Hey! If we know our music more than others, we have a right to judge!

  • What do you approve of, great Grand-master Original? What am I allowed to listen to?

  • THEY ARE ABUSING THAT COPY OF 'SAFE AS MILK'. JUST IMAGINE THE PAPER SCUFFS BEING DUG INTO THAT DISC AS HE SLIDES IT IN AND OUT, AND THE CREASES BEING PUT INTO THAT JACKET AS HE HOLDS IT ONE-HANDED FROM THE CORNER

  • I think the term hipster is too broad, I am by definition a hipster in some respects but I would never label myself as such and hate it when others do because of the stereotypes associated with the current hipster trend. You can listen to vinyl records, be an art major and go to coffee shops without being a hipster you know.

  • @Bestial1985 You totally just proved that you're a hipster

  • @datbishdatuknow So you're saying you can't listen to vinyl records and be an art major without being a hipster? is that what you're saying huh?

  • @Bestial1985 lol I'm just saying that with such a carefully planned out explanation of why you're NOT a hipster, full of excuses and what-not is ppprreeettttyyyy hipster

  • Blah, your description is horrible. I mean I love this movie, but your description of hipsters is so stereotypical. And animal collective? C'mon man, they're an alt. entry level band, everybody knows them, same with vampy weeks pashy pits and MGMT.

  • @Smeonesmall That's because being a hipster IS a stereotype. A stereotype of a horrible type of person that shouldn't be allowed to exist ;) And the bands you listed are simply garbage bands derivative of the shit music hipsters love to say they're fans of....shitty indie music that tries way too hard to be quirky and deep.

  • @Feuyaer fuck yeah...I don't make it my job to hate on "hipsters" but I know they are out there...ironically enough, I heard animal collective at coachella and asked myself "who the fuck would call this music and listen to it" I soon enough found out..

  • @Feuyaer you're right. I'm a hipster...albeit not a terribly hardcore one. I'm the fat type who's too lazy to wear all the required garb. But I can still vouch for the people and say you're right. BTW, anyone who argues against you is a hipster...they'll never admit to it.

  • @Feuyaer name a band you like

  • @Feuyaer

You're generalizing indie music so much it makes me sick. The characters in High Fidelity are not hipsters; they are audiophiles, there is a big difference. Audiophiles are concerned solely with listening to music and the state of the music world, Hipsters make an attempt at that but also tie in fashion and counter-culture. Nowhere Does John Cusack or Jack Black's character put on a pair of tight jeans or do anything of the things hipsters are supposed to do, you're an idiot.

  • @NChin241 You sound like a hipster, and your grammar leads me to believe that you're an idiot. Bye.

  • @Feuyaer

You sound like a grammar nazi, and your shit attitude and generalization of people you don't even know leads me to believe that you're an asshole. Bye

  • @Feuyaer What the hell is this shit? How old are you? And why do I have to keep hearing this fucking boring, irritating word "hipster"? SHUT UP. It does not mean anything, either to people who think it's a good thing or to people who think it's a bad thing. Some people, and I think I would include you in this category since you're referring to High Fidelity characters as "hipsters", use it to denigrate anyone with more taste and intelligence than they have or can understand.

  • @MyPoorHands it doesn't describe taste or intelligence. It refers to either degree of those with a tinge of snobbishness and the belief that they are smarter or more cultured when they are not.

  • @Smeonesmall Hipster

  • @Smeonesmall "vampy weeks pashy pits" i giggled

  • @Smeonesmall No no no no, hipsters are the Coffee House snobs who went to art school. They listen to LCD Soundsystem, Cults, Animal Collective etc. That's hipster. What you are thinking of is High School posers.

  • @Bigbobo33 Hipsters don't exist

  • @Smeonesmall YEA! his argument is invalid because those bands are all too mainstream!

  • @Smeonesmall Only an elitist-hipster-clown would say, "C'mon man, they're an alt. entry level band, everybody knows them." That is what one calls a "one-up," which is what hipsters are constantly attempting to do, one-uping people with sarcastic remarks and smug know-it-all attitudes. Why? Because they are insecure, and this behavior shows it on their sleeve.

  • @quikdon I didn't realize you wrote the handbook, you seem to know more than I do

  • @Smeonesmall No offense intended and hopefully none taken, I just wanted to explain the mentality of the common hipster, not saying you are one mate

  • @Smeonesmall hurr theyre not obscurrreee enufff

  • Isn't High Fidelity a hipster movie?

  • @CoolerKing37 It's got John Cusak - it's a hollywood movie. Though, so was Juno, and hipsters love that movie because they think it exemplifies how "quirky" and "unique" they are when really they're all the same.

  • @CoolerKing37 does it have john cusak the male hipster hero in it.

  • @ReechReynolds

They are all entry-level as fuck. I don't think you understand.

  • but, you know, um, black. LOL

  • The end part is probably my life.

  • Hispters enjoy being hated on by people with average to below-average IQ. It fortifies their constitution.

  • @ekiger

Agreed. Though it is really strange that the uploader passionately hates hipsters even though they favorited videos with M83, Iron and Wine, The Shins, Cold War Kids, Death Cab for Cutie and a bunch of other indie bands. It could be that whole "homosexual is homophobic because they themselves are gay and don't want to admit it" syndrome.

  • @ekiger "no" "which is everybody" "yes"

  • @ekiger Well that still sure as hell leaves a lot of people with higher IQs to hate on the Hipsters!

  • On a side note, Captain Beefheart's "Safe As Milk" Is an amazing album. And Animal Collective are totally boss.

  • @Lizzzeg i saw animal collective stoned off my ass and was bored. so. the idea of them being 'boss' seems like a load of shit.

  • @Forks22 Oh silly me, how could I forget that no band is good unless you like it!

  • @Lizzzeg It happens to lots of people, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • @Forks22 have your own experience then, or maybe don't get stoned if you want to constructively judge a band. I've seen AC shows that were a bit tame but I always like them because I am excited about the music they make. At a show in 2006 they were insane and played loud, exciting stuff, for a small crowd, and that was awesome.
