i love Latin... it's so enigmatic... it makes me ting of the celestial abode that's waiting me when i've breathed my last breath... so peaceful ... it also reminded me of my life in the seminary...
When I first read Latin, I couldn't get not 1 word right. Now I can say the Glory be, Hail Mary, and the Our Father in Latin. PRAISE THE HOLY GHOST, FOR HELPING ME MAKE PROGRESS!
Your'e wrong actually. That wasn't changed until later for the vernacular practice of the Mass. The Creed truly says "I believe". Latin 'credo' means "I believe".
I'm very lucky as my area access to the Traditional Latin Mass (provided by the wonderful Society of St Pius X) daily. I am praying too for the spread of the Traditional rite, and it miffs me to see the increasing number of liturgical abuses in the Ordinary Form and that bishops don't bother to provide for it even though there are priests and faithful who want it =(
I miss the Extraordinary Form already... It's been three weeks since my last one... There's one near my college, but none where I live... There are like 6-7 Catholic Churches in my city, can't there be at least one parish to regularly offer it? =[
They say there's low demand. Well, has the Extraordinary Form been exposed to people? Expose it to the faithful! Let them (re)discover this treasure of the Church! Let's work with our pastors and our bishops to get this done!
I sympathize with you. I go to college in a small town where there are several churches but none offer the Tridentine Mass. I can't imagine why. Church leaders seem so certain that the Ordinary form is loved but perhaps they should consult attendance in the pews. Conversely, I have yet to meet anyone who has seen the Tridentine Mass and disliked it. Generations who grew up without it find it uplifitng, the experience they have looked for. Go to an Extraordinary Form Mass! There are young people!
Wow. I'm breathless. I took Latin in college and I still love the syntax and nuances of the language. Now, years later, I'm a deacon and appreciate it all the more, especially this beautiful chant and its accompanying images. Thank you. May God bless you abundantly. He has done so to me through your post.
Am I right when I'm saying that 'Credo in unum Deum' doesn't mean 'I believe in God' but 'I believe to God'? So I means that you believe to be very close to God and that you only follow His way.
Reason is grammatically: 'In unum Deum' is the proposition 'in' followed by an accusative case and has to be translated as 'to' because in+accusative represents a direction. If you say 'I believe in God' it actually means 'Credo in uno Deo' in Latin.
No, it does mean "I believe in one God." It is the accusative that indicates the direct object. "Credo in unum Deum" literally means "I believe in one God." It is very ancient and has been around for centuries...if something was one, it would have been picked up.
Also, to add, the Creed was composed during the Council of Nicea to address heresies, such as the one that states that God and Christ are two gods. So, "unum Deum" comes from this.

We are in history in the making. Not only has Our Holy Father Benedict free'd the true Tridentine Latin Mass for all the faithful, but on 21 January 2009 he lifted the excommunication from the SSPX. Pope Benedict is the greatest Pope since Piux XII. Thanks be to God for the Roman Catholic Church and for the True Latin Mass of all ages.
anyone know if westminster cathedral in victoria london stil has latin masses? Thanks for posting. There is only one true church, catholic for life!!!!!!!!!!
..Just a reminder if you are visiting New York City...there is a church (St. Agnes) located on 43 rd st between 3rd Ave. and Lexington Ave. ( only 2 minutes away from Grand Central Station) where the main Mass on Sundays is the latin High Mass ...awesome choir and preaching...i always feel so peaceful after Mass when i go there...Again the Mass is observed just like you will see on the youtube video from the church in France i mentioned in my last comment...
We catholics stand in a centuries long tradition! This music is of a heavenly beauty. Lets do everything to preserve it en transfer it to future generations
Singing the Credo which is what I am doing right now . T.G. at last the Rome is coming to its senses and giving us what we want and have longed for, the return of the latin Mass. I was at Mass yesterday the Gloria , Santus, and Angus Dei was sang in latin and lovely, sadly we now have a generation who need to learn and appreciate the Mass said in latin. God willing ,this will happen so that where ever we go we can attend Mass, to, not only be part of it ,but to feel part of it.
Bon sang c'est terrible pour un agnostique d'entendre le credo. Certes cela ne change rien à mon agnosticisme irrévocable mais, bigre, que c'est beau !
..Beautiful video..If you are ever in new york city go to the Church of Saint Agnes near Grand central station in manhattan (43 rd st btwn #rd Ave. and lexington Ave.)...they have on sundays the latin MAss as their MAin liturgy with an awesome choir observing every traditional rubric...it captures that mystical aspect of the Mass that for many of us was lost when the catholic church began the new mass...i was surprised how MANY young folks in their 20's attended the Mass...beautiful church..
To people not familiar with the Latin Mass youtube has a great video showing a full Latin Tridentine Mass in a Church in France..You can see how the Mass was celebrated beforee Vatican II.Pope Benedict now allows this Massfor Catholics for whom the Latin Mass creates that atmosphere of faith and prayer that speaks to them...the video is called Tridentine Latin Mass for the Last Sunday After Pentecost 1/8..the info part will send to a site where you can it entirely and not just in parts.....
Thanks Ezemdi for keeping this. I once again visited your entry. It lifted my spirits and reduced me to tears at the same time. When Ilisten to this I once again become the 5 year old boy visiting church with my mother. I can still recall it. 35 years after.
Every sunday, when i am in the Church, this is the best part, and i sing it with all my soul. I really like Credo, and the last part with the Amen makes me cry.
Same here! To recite the words that speak of the hope in the Resurrection and of life everlasting is one of the most consoling aspects of our faith...Blessed be the most Holy Trinity, now and forever more.
This is beautiful, truly. The Novus Ordo Mass is completely within the authority of the magesteriam to have created. The Roman Rite is in quite a predicament because we now have two "common" liturgies, that is liturgies that take place at every feast. I find it funny that people blame modernists for Novus Ordo when it was a conservative, Paul VI, who propagated it, not the modernist John XXIII. Furthermore, I agree, only males should assist at the altar.
To be honest, I think there's more latin sometimes in the high-order Anglican churches than in the catholic churches these days. I've never sung the creed in latin, but we have done magnificat, nunc dimittis, kyrie (ok that's greek), sanctus & benedictus and angus Dei.
Sorry, I did mistake on my previous comment. I wanted to say that Our Heavenly Father can NOTabsolutely be DEFINED.... I do love you and your laborious efforts, EZEMDI, that have inspire you to create IT. I do love everyone, who believe in this CREDO. Certainly, we shall share our FRUITS of this CREDO together very soon in the Kingdom of Heaven. Love, Paul.
Excellent! I love words and pictures that go together. For those, who can not understand Latin well, can see the picture and Gregorian melody that, more or less, has effects in Latin meanings as well. Those effects will surely inspire the hearers' belief in One God. However, our Heavenly Father can absolutely be defined. As human beings have attempted to do so, there are always disputes amongst men, that originate hate and fanaticism. That is no good for any believer in One God at all. Love.
Actually, the "we" is not an American abuse. The Credo was written in the singular because the profession was originally private, when it was made in a group it was often said "credimus." The singular is preserved in chant because it is led by one cantor.
The Latin form of the prayer in the Missale Romanum, the official liturgy, uses Credo, not Credimus. It is my understanding that most of the translations also use the first person singular. ICEL, the group that provided the English rendition of the liturgy decided to interpret, not translate this -- and numerous other -- phrases.
In the Sarum rite, the rite native to England, the Mozarabic rite, as well as in some regions of the Celtic and Gallican rites, the first person plural of credere (credimus) was used when the Nicene Creed was publically recited. Only the Roman rite used the first person singular within the Latin tradition. For this reason, it is equally correct to say "we" as it is to say "I."
Thank you for the information about the Sarum and Mozarabic forms of the prayer. I should have been more careful and qualified my comment.
While 'we' may be a correct translation of the form of the prayer used in certain circumstances, one can argue, quite properly in my opinion, that this is an incorrect statement insofar as that none of us can speak to what anyone else believes. Credamus (subjunctive: 'we should believe'), perhaps; but not credimus.
You are right Credo is "I believe" but Credimus "We believe" was broadly introduced in the latin version of The New Rite of Mass to make it more "Ecumenical" Credo is correct because I cant say what you believe no more than anyone can say what I believe, Its a personal profession of faith
SOrry, I couldn't fit all the Nicene Creed in one posting, so the sung lyrics being 2 posts down with "Credo in unum..." followed by one below with "crucifixus..." and then ending here:
Confiteor unum baptisma
in remissionem peccatorum.
Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum.
Et vitam venturi saeculi.
Amen.
If anyone tries to pull one on you to say Latin is difficult to "figure out" or "understand" is foolish. Look at the Latin roots and realize how so many of our English words came.
You are right. Latin is that hard to understand but why did you have to post the entire "Credo" text. If you look at the right hand side you will see that I already did that.
I lift my voice with you my brothers and sisters to our Everlasting God and for his great love He has shown us in Jesus Christ our Lord! His Love fills my Heart for all of you.
Love this clip...can anyone tell me who painted the painting showing the scene at Pentecost (with the Blessed Virgin Mary at the centre), and the title of it? Thanks!
Please do not remove this video. I watch it quite often. It strenghtens me. I find it beautiful. It gives me a sense of belonging as well as a sense of pride in my beautiful faith. It always makes me cry. Thank you so much for putting this online.

BEAUTIFUL!!!! I think every Catholic Church should profess the creed and say the Lord's prayer in Latin.
rstwls2 3 years ago 7

Love.

Um, "Credo" means "I believe", as oppossed to "we believe". Basic latin. Aint' no we when it comes time to cross the river. More American abuses.

calm down dude...you don't have to be a jerk even though you are right.
ezemdi 3 years ago

ARandomNomen 3 years ago

Look at the Latin roots and realize how so many of our English words came.
kostumeman 3 years ago
You are right. Latin is that hard to understand but why did you have to post the entire "Credo" text. If you look at the right hand side you will see that I already did that.
Good observations though

I love the traditional pictures you put in this video. Beautiful video.

Oh and "unum" is "one" so it would actually be, "I believe in one God."
