A caravan is 1. A company of travelers journeying together, as across a desert or through hostile territory.

He asks if the "caravans still go across the sand". Thus implying it's a desert (rather than hostile territory). Also he has multiple references to "sand" which conjures images of the desert. For example he asks if the "moonlight still hits the sands of lebanon" Lebanon has dirt, and sand on the beach but that's clearly not the image he's trying to convey.
