@thebearclawjones He keeps her talking so she doesn't notice. After she exchanged him the 5 singles for the 5 dollar bill, he said he'd exchange her the $5 bill and the 5 ones (she had in her hand, which is money she already exchanged) for a 10 dollar bill. So in another words, he made $5.
@Muggle423 I dont think so. He pays for whatever the kid gets out of a $5 and he gets back his $4 and change - that's HIS money. Then he finds another $1 bill from somewhere and asks for a $5 bill for 5 singles and gives that to her - she has $5 of HIS money. Then he finds a $5 bill and asks for a $10 bill and gives her his second $5 - so she now has $10 of HIS money.
Finally, she gives him a $10 bill for his 5 x 1 +1 x 5 - he gets back his money as a $10 bill...theres no swindle?! He's a fool!
@Muggle423 OK, I see it - what threw me was that there WAS an exchange that i didn't see, 5 for 5 x1, because it actually happens OFF-screen, during the cut to Tatum, mid-scene [it is suggest by sound-effect, but that is masked by a fault in the soundtrack!]
When we cut back they are square. she has the 5 1's [now HER 5 x 1's] and he's holding a $5 bill from her, [not "found"] so the mis-direction is in leading her to think those 5 x 1's are still HIS 5 x 1's..... my brain is now at peace.
@thebearclawjones LoL. I totally just had another paragraph of explanation till I noticed your second post. Yeah, I was gonna say the exact same thing about how the scene cuts to Addie so we don't see the cashier actually give him the $5 bill.
I also read parts of the book the movie is based on so I read the explanation of the swindle in there as well.
Glad you understand it now! It can be confusing at first.
Unless he's passing counterfeit bills, where's the swindle?
