  • should my cockatiel be tamed before his wings get clipped (when i bring him to the vet)

  • @mcgamer427 How about just tame him and then there's no point in clipping the wings.

  • does your bird need to be tamed to for his wings to be clipped. (like when you bring it to a vet)

  • :OO

  • I don't think birds like having their wings clipped and it isn't good for them, anyway. - As @kiliparrot already explained!

  • I can see both sides. It's hazardous to keep birds flightless, and hazardous to let them fly. There is no right answer. Birds just naturally aren't built for captivity.

I have a budgie who was tricky to tame. I clipped her wings and spent time with her. She only bonded to me when I let her wings grow out. Imagine how scary humans are when there's no way to escape! She loves to fly and land on us.

May I also point out, it is proven that birds with unclipped wings that can fly around live longer.

  • @koshplappit not exactly correct. Exercise AND diet go hand in hand. A fully flighted bird that eats an all seed diet can have heart disease and many other health related issues. What studies have shown is that being flightless really has minimal effect on health and well being. It mostly depends on the care you give the bird as the owner. You would agree that a bird that breaks a wing and can never fly again can live a full, long, happy, and health life, right?

  • This is a good thing. and considering those birds were all young, if you want to tame a young bird without it flying away and smashing into things, landing in boiling hot pots or flying into fires, windows, walls, pictures, tvs...pretty much anything that could hurt. then its good to clip your birds wings. Its the same as having a haircut, and its painless and all the feathers will grow back within a few months, and if your bird is very tame by then, you may not have to clip its feathers again.

  • @MissWowaholic Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. Parrots that were raised in the human environment learn how to fly around the house without crashing into anything. They're not stupid like you make them out to be. They may knock into a few things when learning to fly as youngsters but without it they wouldn't learn. Like a human child they are flexible and built for it. As for fires, open doors, etc.... these are equally a threat to clipped parrots.

  • i say abuse!

  • .......

  • Why would u idiots do that?! That's like like animal abuse

  • On the whole, I prefer the show clip. I love to see the end wing tips there and even though there are many ways to wing clip birds, this one seems all the rage. :]

  • holy shit, hes choking the poor thing!!

  • @BaconisYummy456 As much as they are wrong for clipping the wings, I don't think that is choking the parrots. Birds have a calcified trachea and you can grab them pretty hard by the neck and it won't block their breathing. On the other hand holding the belly could prevent them from breathing.

  • @kiliparrot Which is exactly how you explained it in many of your videos. I wish more bird owners would come and subscribe to your channel and watch your videos, they are extremely helpful.

  • my parrot is so fuckin aggresive and when i try to catch him he starts screaming and biting me ........ she moves all the time... what can i do??? my parrot has hit into a wall 2 times but she doesnt let me to clip her wings..

  • @sweetdrag0n they grow back duh

  • Holy crap it seems so sad to do this to gods birds :(

  • Lol I loved how the first one made cute little chirps but the second one screeched rlly loud

  • Poor bird :( If birds feel threatened in anyway they fly for safety, I think it's cruel to clip wings. Why can't people just shut doors and close windows? I don't understand why anyone would want to have their birds wings clipped, they enjoy flying about!

  • @1diamond2009

You obviously never had a bird before. Mine fly into walls, furniture, and just about everything else. I clip their wings not because I'm an idiot that forgets to close doors and windows, but because I'd rather have a bird not kill itself.

  • @codeythesilent I've got a parrot and had him for 13 years and never once has had any accidents. How can you say I have never had a bird just because I wont clip their wings? How pathetic is that!

  • @1diamond2009

It's not pathetic, it's for the most part a correct statement. I've had parakeets for 11-12 years and no matter how tame, they always fly into crap. Closed windows, walls, you name it. Just because you happened to have one well behaved bird doesn't speak for the rest of them.

  • @codeythesilent I've been brought up around birds my whole life, from budgies up to macaws and not one of these birds have had their wings clipped or had any accidents. If you know a lot about birds you will know that they need exercise and the best exercise for them is flying - why take their natural flying ablity away from them? I personally find it very cruel. I'm allowed to have my own opinion you know, don't start with me just because I don't agree with you.

  • @1diamond2009

They do get exercise.Their wings are slipped to the point to where they can't fly up and away, but not glide around. If you're against clipping wings to the point they just drop to the floor, I'm right with you on that.

  • @codeythesilent

Perhaps you can install some perches for a softer landing? None can sit on a wall except spiderman. Clipping wings is violence and pure laziness. If you can't train a bird, don't take one.

  • @1diamond2009 I think it's cruel not to clip. I've seen too many accidents of birds flying into toilets, boiling pots and hitting walls and windows with enough force to break their neck. if you want to take that chance it's obvious you do not care too much for your feathered friend.

  • @carolh Your telling me I don't care about my parrot because I don't want to clip it's wings? They need their wings for exercise for a start! Also I don't put my parrot in danger, I close 'doors' and he stays in my livingroom flying about as happy as he can be. I would hate to know where you leave yours or peoples you know for them to fly into toilets or even boiling hot pans! Who ever does that does not even deserve a bird. They for sure cannot look after a parrot!

  • @carolh also I've had my parrot for 13 years and never has he had any accidents. My friend has got a african grey and had it's wings clipped and ended up being in her own dogs mouth because the parrot couldn't ''fly'' away. Not only that when her african grey tried to fly she kept crashing into her walls, fire place, tv and even coffee table, all because she had her wings clipped! At least my parrot as NEVER had a accident! All due to no clipping

  • @carolh I agree to both arguments. Clipping wings protects him from flying into boiling pots etc. But: a bird isn´t a pet you can let it wander/fly around in your kitchen/bathroom or whatever. That´s what I think. =)

  • @carolh

Close the toilet, when the birds are outside their cage.

Birds have nothing to do in a kitchen! Too much danger!

Cover windows and mirrors with a curtain or something else.

Install perches at the walls and build places in the room, where the birds can have a safe landing.

Don't move the furniture each week! Birds have a inner radar system and are able to navigate without accidents!

It is possible for pet birds to become great aviators!

Pls give them a chance to live as BIRDS!

  • @carolh I have a question, I have an untamed white faced cockatiel that loves to fly. I cant pet or really hold him because he bites. He was adopted from a woman selling him online. How would I go about clipping his wings? He doesnt even come out of the cage unless he wants to:(

  • @carolh yeah since i dont know how to do that my bird died, we went away fora about a day and when i opened the cage to feed them the sealing fan was turn on and one flew away and died ;(

  • @carolh no, its cruel to clip. by budgie is trained not to fly into doors or windows, and i can even take her outside, she's been with me for years and she's never had her wings clipped. shes happier without them trimmed.

  • @carolh It is cruel to clip, theyre birds...theyre meant to fly. And birds that fly into toilets, boiling pans and walls etc, is down to irresponsible owners. People who care for their feathered friends, would allow them to move in their natural way and not leave them unattended with bathroom doors open and pans boiling away.

  • @carolh Are you kidding me??? It is cruel to clip the birds wings cause you're too dumb to close the bathroom door, not cook with parrot out, keep windows shaded, etc. I've heard of someone's clipped parrot falling off their shoulder into a pot of boiling water. And when clipped parrots get startled and fly reflexively, they crash into walls or on the floor. There's no excuse for people who don't like birds to buy birds and then turn them into a colorful hamster for their own decoration.

  • @carolh Yep that is very true ... my lovebird actually flew into the dog's water bucket and was about to drown .. until i heard a weird noise, went to see and saw her struggling for her life... lesson learned the hard way. Since then its wings clipped. Not taking any chance.

  • @1diamond2009 Don't make comments on things you don't know anything about.

  • @toad773 I've been brought up with birds/parrots my whole life so yes I do know and also I can have my own opinion, don't hate on me just because I don't agree with wing clipping! That's what I cannot stand about people, the ones who have to be cocky just because I don't agree with everybody else! I'm allowed my opinion just like your allowed yours!!

  • @toad773 and also I've been brought up around budgies up to macaws so don't you dare try to tell me I don't know any thing - if anybody don't it's you!

  • @1diamond2009 OK kid.

  • thats horrible

  • Wonderful birds BEFORE they were clipped!

I don't know if bird attitude in Kanada is different as in Germany, because we do not clip our birds wings ... we CLOSE our windows as long as the birds are outside^^

  • @linnieworld Canada has a C not a K

  • @zzwhiteboitt

Thanks a lot for the private lesson :-))) I was shocked because of the clipped wings of these beautiful birds, so that I used the German spelling.

  • my one and second sunconure flew away already :-( . coz i clipped them just 5 wings for both sides .

  • Thats really interesting, thanks for sharing :) If only our birds behaved as well as the 1st one in this clip lol xo

  • Yeah I know.

Gotta remember we used baby birds, they really have no clue what's going on, well except for the little Meyers lol
