The first commenter is also right about one thing I didn't really notice before. Luna's carrige puller ponies are dragon and pony hybrids. I don't mind different species together, I feel like they are just different races. The age difference isn't a big deal either because Spike has lived along time, - only a few years younger than Twilight, but like you said just matures slower.
I Always thought it was pretty canon from the start. I think it would be weird for Spike to have a crush on someone in a kids show and not have the relationship develope a little further then him wearing a shirt with her face on it. I also like everything you said in the vid. Sparity is the most official pairing in MLP.
The age difference is moot because they're left undefined on purpose and in Secret of my Excess, the writers gave Spike a magical aging plot device. Everything else like species, lifespan and offspring is over analysis.
I think its planned from the start. Both characters share a gemstone plot device. She is the element of generosity while he is a creature of greed. Also they are the only two characters ever shown looking for love. Too convenient, don't you think? Writers have plans for them.
@buc555 Its a cartoon. Its a kids show. The kids won't care if it was a frog and a pig that runs a theater, a giraffe and a hippo that journeyed from New York to Africa or if it was a magical shape shifting dog and a flying elongated unicorn-like rainbow creature from the crystal dimension.
I could probably name a few more inter-species couples in the history of children's entertainment but you get the idea.

If they see a cartoon cat and a cartoon dog fall in love, they're not gonna judge it in any way and accept it as it is in the present. Sonic is a hedgehog, Sally is a squirrel, kids aren't gonna care and will enjoy it anyway.
@ixiahj Sonic and Sally was more acceptable since they have similar physiques so you could imagine they were the same species. Spike and Rarity look nothing a like and are also not the same age.
You have to remember that Rarity is a unicorn; therefore, she might live much longer than an earth pony. You must also notice that Princess Luna's bodyguards are dragon/pony hybrids. As for forgiveness, that was covered in the conclusion of the pilot when Luna was forgiven by her sister for the crimes she commited as Nightmare Moon.
@GideonBernstein I don't recall them ever saying Unicorns live for a long time. There is no letter or report at the end of the pilot, so I don't think that's quite the same.
