Mafikizolo beautifully recreate the sound of fifties South African music with the legendary Hugh Masekela making a star appearance. And, damn!, they're good at it!
stofpoeper - Yes, correct. Very old SA apartheid. During the 40's and 50's black people were forced to carry a special "pass" on their persons when moving through white areas. (Called a dompas). If caught without, they would end up in police custody. Police vans would do the rounds, and these were nicknamed
"kwela". (See 2:35 - 2:37). In the song they mock the dompas system, the white afrikaner police and of course the kwela. Only the very elderly black people will know what I am talking about
Mafikizolo is an Afro-pop group/band from South Africa. It is made up of lead singer/composer Nhlanhla Sibongile Mafu Nciza and songwriter/composer/singer Theo Kgosinkwe. Tebogo Benedict Madingoane (rapper) was shot dead in a road incident in 2004.
Their music is also influenced by kwaito and they have been credited with a genre called Kwela after their style of music. It has been described as kwaito-cum-marabi house music. Their music deals with pertinent social issues such as women and children abuse, poverty, the importance of education and the dangers of casual sex. They have performed all over Southern Africa and have a fan base all over the world.
Hugh Masekela, u make tears drop from my eyes from d courage & strength u impart on these young prisoners. I may not understand d language but d music speak 4 itself. U bring back life in Mandela's prison days to mind. I love u guys till i die!
Greatest musical TALENT! Me being a Gandaman I barely understand their Bantu dialect but they have been my favorite African Music group for years! I Love them sooooooo much! God Bless You Mafikizolo!!
would love to download the song on itunes but doesn't seem to exist? What's the name? "Kwela" or is thee another name? Typing in "Mafikizolo" doesn't seem to help - any suggestions?
@ThomasHuwCole Mafikizolo is the name of the band. Kwela is both the style of music and the name of the album (released in 2003). The name of the song is "Kwela Kwela", which is a pun (as babybunnyberry pointed out) because of the double meaning of the word 'kwela'. :) Mafikizolo are in iTunes, but I don't think iTunes has this song.
@dietzenbacher5 It's about being arrested for breaking curfew in South Africa, during apartheid. Kwela is the name of the rhythm, but also refers to the kwela-kwela, the police vans.
classic, in 04 we had a school trip Swaziland to cape town by bus, took about 2 days to get there, the only radio cassette player we had was mafikizolo and malaika!
What a tune!
