This video was super helpful. I've been trying to figure out the interlude part for a few weeks now, and I'm glad I finally found some notation for it.
You mean this whole time that sound, or more technical terms, that scale I was trying so hard to find was actually just the half/diminished scale? EEE I feel so dumb now
As the simpsons Mr Burns would say, Excellent video! I have been trying to figure out how chick does that chromatic function thing that he does in so many of his recordings, I have his improvised solo book, and the author only lists it as ""chick does his chromatic function"" it might just be a two note thing, but i can't get my licks to sound as good as his,,lol thanks
Greetings Doug, I have been reading a lot of the comments and "AbbyandEd" would be envious of me saying that I have been hearing play live over many, many years.
However, it appears that your correspondent does play keyboard, so now I am the envious one.
I've listened to your stuff for months. You are one of my favorite jazz piano players ever. My only regret is that you are retired and living in another country. I'd love to take years of lessons from you! How you play is how I want to play.
Regarding this particular "song" I have one complaint. Not just for you but Chic Corea as well. Where is the reference to the original artist? This is very cool jazz but some homage should be paid to Joaquin Rodrigo, don't you think?
Doug, For a serious "Sunday player" like myself, you help add a lot of content and explanation to this wonderful thing called Jazz. Many thanks again.
I like your solo lines. There's some things I don't really agree with though:
- The way you play roots on downbeats when clearly in bass-player's range. (eg: 1:22 onwards)
- The way you play the little interlude, it's not very solid nor accurate. (eg:2:56)
- The chart is not really very accurate. I understand it's MIDI interpretation of what you're playing but at times it's really bad, especially in the solo lines.
After the slow intro, the head starts at 1:17. The melody then plays over a couple circle of fifths cycles, culminating in the syncopated unison at 1:34. Then at 1:47, back to the top of the head. This time after the unison, it goes to the "main theme" which is actually 24 bars (from 2:16 to 2:40). After the main theme, it goes not to the top of the head, but to a point 10 bars in (1:23 in the first statement) then that syncopated unison a third time before the solos. so yes, binary!
I have been looking for a tutorial for this song for over a year on youtube and this never came up in my searches! I stumbled across it looking at other tutorials. Thank You! Im going to return to this forever. Or at least till I can play it!
wanna underline what probably 100 people already said: i mean- this is wonderful and we all can thank u 100000 times for putting this on youtube, sometimes you have to travel a lot and the piano is not an instrument u can carry 2 every place hahaha .. and so the only way to practice is this one, thank you for giving this posibility!!!!!
nice! you can usually tell a chick corea tune by the way it's written. it's kinda skittish, in a good way. fast and, well i can't describe it but it's quite identifiable even when played by somebody else, as in this fine video.
Mr.Mckenzie please help me. I'm an aspiring jazz pianist. I'm 20 and I've been playing ever since I was 4. What would be the best source of information besides lessons for there are few teachers in my area.
Absolutely a great job Doug, great piano impro and I like also the Bass and Drum / Percussion, terrific rhythm and nice dynamic. It seems that in this video you have also improved the optics of the video.
what software do you use?
