I always find myself watching this over and over again. Pestilence is one of the best bands ever! Their new song wasn't half bad either, nothing compared to this though. I missed a jazzy breakdown for the solo of it, otherwise it was pretty good.
pestilence heineken legal hokers and clogs are hollands best treasures.Got a best of these called mind reflections for the car to prserve thre albums.hell when I play it I must look a looney on the roads.Hopefully the reunion tour will be worth for I am hoping to catch my first pet show to make up for being born 20 years late.
I think the reason Pestilence is underrated is becaus at the time Death was considered as the top dog of technical death metal, and Pestilence sounded very much like Death, so I presume that people thought of Pestilence as beeing a Death clone, because in many ways they sound just like Chuck Schuldiner's Death. But seeing how shitty most death acts are now a days I would give Pestilence a medal now! This form of jazz infused metal is classic, no doubt about it.
Pestilence aren't really underrated, they are pretty well known among people who know more than just Cannibal Corpse. Also...the jazz influences weren't until Spheres.
If I was to make a death metal record, I would try to get ahold of some 90s-era production equipment. My most favorite metal records came out of the 90s. For some reason, new metal records just dont seem to be the same as 90s metal records..
GothslayerEma, it's cool you can hear that new albums sound far too synthetic. Obviously all those faggots within record labels think they do a good job in order to provide a good "product" while they just ruin real sound and metal soul...
Yea, I am with you on that one. Its sad. I just finished listening to some of the new bloobath record and I could not get into it. It was just..to clean for me. Heck, I think that the 90s were better for all types. As much as I hate grunge and alt rock, the 90s still had this kind of production in it. I think that music in a whole should take a step back and say "Wait a second, this is to clean." If you want a good new record, get Sodoms The Final Sign of evil. Its new, and the prod. is old.
This isn't over polished if you mean the production? Listen to a lot of new death metal which 90% of is garbage and listen to how clean that production is. This is old school, dirty, sludgy Death Metal! :D
a prime example for this fact is Bolt Thrower's "The 4th crusade" which was recorded in 1992 and it STILL owns 95% of ALL records produced afterwards!! PERIOD !!!
More thrash than death, but there is some death metal influences on "Pleasure to Kill"... And at the opposite we have Vader that is more death than thrash.
Here we go with the genres again. Kreator is Teutonic Thrash Metal period. Just like Sodom and Destruction. But they helped pioneer Death Metal just like Sodom helped pioneer Black Metal.
I think some should stick on music, not people and heroes so much. Not talking about musical or leading abilities' appreciation here, thats ok. About personalities we have never met as patterns mostly. Personal perspective, music is what matters most, not if someone did this or that. Speak about Mameli's musicianship, why don't you ? He maybe is a little underground guy but I think he deserves it. Hail to one of the greatest bands ever, once again !!
"Out of the body" is from"Consuming Impulse" album, on that Martin van Drunen is on vocals/bass.Good album. "Land of tears" is from"Testimony of the ancients" lp, with Patrick Mameli vocals/lead guitars, a masterpiece!
Musicianship years ahead plus feeling plus aggression when needed. Most bands back then tend to be furious but lack of some technique, today there's plenty of technique but lack of musical feeling and ideas. Death, Cynic, Pestilence, Atheist, Morbid angel ... pioneers. I m not talking just about something "kickass", talking about musicianship.
You should check out Necrophagist and Obscura's new demo... as well as Trauma (the Polish band) and Vader. Don't limit yourself to American Metal (okay, Pestilence is from the Netherlands :P)
I 'm not limiting myself. Just mentioned a few of my default, it could also be Invocator (Swe) or Electrocution (It) or old At The Gates or old Vader stuff or Gory Blister (It) and so many other bands ... it's just that America has a biggest amount of bands that suits my tastes but it doesn't mean something. I 'm an international guy ;) Thnx for the info, i 'll check Obscura ;)
Yes,indeed the videoclip was released in 1991 as for the Testimony of the Ancients album. A masterpiece like "Consuming Impulse". A top notch death-metal band. [Reminds me Death, in the guitar tecnique, a little bit... Great bands both. RIP Chuck].
This band never had the recognition they deserved. This videoclip at Headbanger's ball mtv though was one of the favourites. A classic introduction to death-metal, like Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Deicide, Possessed, Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Unleashed...
I can't believe they aren't (most of the time) referred to as one of the greatest death metal bands of the first wave. I only discovered them a few weeks and am astonished at how little praise such a talented and kick ass band gets.
Oh, and the vocalist sounds like a Schuldiner, Tardy and Vincent alike. That is a fucking good thing.
They didn't star using the jazz sound until the next album. You can hear some jazz tempos in a few of the songs off this album, but it's not a apparent.
You know i really like the track "blessed are the sick", but when i saw the video I was like, WTF!! Morbid Angel are the Manowar of death metal. That's not a compliment by the way...
Trust me, that's the only video they did in that style and yeah, it tends to make you think "what the hell?", but it was supposed to be exaggerated. I mean come on, it's supposed to be about unholy desires, and the video pictures that perfectly. It's a good video, but it can alienate some people who would only think about Morbid Angel's visual aspect.
Check out the entire album. It's absolutely kickass.
I bought it when it came out! Did you know that the reviews at the time complained that the guitars were a little on the quiet side, although it was a progression musically. But i did like the record. I spent ages learning to play Desolate Ways. Don't understand the point of Doomsday Celebration though.
Yes, the production really takes the agressivity out of the music. And yes, a good deal of Morbid Angel's instrumentals are pointless. But who cares anyway, the great tracks are present!
Shit,I almost forgot this band...must have been ages since I listend last time to this.Dug into my cd collection and found the original.Time flies....
Does everybody think that jazz is just mellow guitars and piano with some old black lady singing a catchy melody? You can see jazz influences in a lot of things if you know what jazz is...
I loved any album from these guys, one of a kind any each of them. But with this album, I fall definitively inlove with the thrash, in 1993 when I was just a dumb and young girl. I specially remember this song, (I didn't know it has videoclip)and the classic "Revelations". I still get nut with their music, all the time!
One of the very best songs from probably the best Dutch metal-album ever, by anybody. I only wish the production was a bit more bass-heavy. This video, however over-the-top and even cheesy sometimes, got me seriously into metal back then.
Recently they've played debut videos from Suffocation and Hate Eternal, but I really wish I could go back in time and re-live the early 90's sometimes...
I think that the Testimony of the ancients was, as an technical death metal album, a bit of a disappointment and the numerous keyboard interludes killed the flow. But still a great masterpiece and durable listening.
They are all the icons of Death Metal and best bands like Death, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse, what you guys cant share???Fuck you all, shut the fuck up and listen your music!
This is a great track and Patrick Mameli's vocals are awesome but Martin van Drunen was the better vocalist imo. I much prefered the earlier Pestilence albums too, my fave being Consuming Impulse. Out Of The Body is an amazing track.
I think Pestilence blows Death away. Everything after Human was laborious. Even Spheres tops those later Death albums, IMO. But, there's no accounting for taste.
im not so sure about the "everything after human" comment, i would say that everything before spiritual healing wasnt the best death couldve done, imo (at this moment at least). pestilences first three albums were much better than deaths first two, though. i would agree that spheres tops maybe sound of perseverence and definitely symbolic (also imo), but i think death were more evolved than pestilence (except maybe for spheres) and they were quite a lot more influential.
One of the members (I don't remember who) also played in a band called Sarcosanct, and release two thrash metal lps. I'll have to upload some of that soon
At last,I get to see this clip some 17 years after it's release!Pestilence were Netherlands' finest;an essential metal band, even if the swansong release "Spheres" was completely misunderstood in it's time.Fans should check out Patrick Mameli's new group called C-187 (also includes fellow "Testimony" cohort Tony Choy & legendary Cynic drummer Sean Reinert). To MRMC'SCREAMO-You should try find '80's Texan band Watchtower's "Control & Resistance" album,a true masterpiece that inspired all these acts
Asphyx are awesome, although completely different death metal to the progressive stuff mentioned, very brutal stuff! Sinister are pretty good, as are Thanatos if anyone is interested in other Dutch Death Metal bands.
This is the shit. Too bad that new promo sucks.

Testimony of the Ancients was an awesome album. I think this song and "Presence of the Dead", "Stigmatized" are the best songs on the album.

This is a great track and Patrick Mameli's vocals are awesome but Martin van Drunen was the better vocalist imo. I much prefered the earlier Pestilence albums too, my fave being Consuming Impulse. Out Of The Body is an amazing track.

Pestilence were good but the kings of death metal were Death. RIP Chuck, you wrote some classic songs.

I think Pestilence blows Death away. Everything after Human was laborious. Even Spheres tops those later Death albums, IMO. But, there's no accounting for taste.

im not so sure about the "everything after human" comment, i would say that everything before spiritual healing wasnt the best death couldve done, imo (at this moment at least). pestilences first three albums were much better than deaths first two, though. i would agree that spheres tops maybe sound of perseverence and definitely symbolic (also imo), but i think death were more evolved than pestilence (except maybe for spheres) and they were quite a lot more influential.

well you cant say pestilence is better because death and morbid angel practically invented death metal boi

Thanatos is one of my favorites.
