@aliciasy156 Thanks for watching! There is a link to much better written instructions with a diagram for making a pants pattern in the info section of this video. Note that the instructions are in centimeters so when it says go down 2.5 cms for example make sure you use cms and not inches. But the rest of the calculations you can do in inches if you want to. Most tape measures have both inches and centimeters on them.
@fettuccinetube I notice that you used centimeters for your measurements. i normally use inches and i was wondering if i still had to divide and stuff if i use inches? would my pants still turn out fine
Fabianna your videos are great and you are an excellent teacher!!! I wanted to ask if it was possible to make a pattern out of a pair of pants that I really really like?
@bi8autiful Definitely! The best way is, if the pants are old and you do not want to use them anymore is to rip out all the seams and trace the pieces, then sew them together the same way as the pants were sewn together. If they are pants you still use kind of trace and measure the different pieces as best you can. Don´t forget to take into account the seam allowances.
Why do you Divide your measurements, and do you always divide by 4 and 2? I am interested in this for making wrestling tights and pants, if I use Spandex will i need to divide the measurments also?
@Dustyhp1 hi. Thanks for watching. The reason I divide by 4 and 2 for the pants pattern is because i am dividing the human body into quarters. The pants pattern is for the right front, right back, left front and left back of your body. In the case of the thigh measurement I only divide by 2 because you have 2 legs (each is only on one half of your body) and so we are dividing your leg into front of leg and back of leg. For any pants the basic pattern is the same.
thank u for the response. u did a wonderful job on this video, top notch. no other pants making videos that i've found on utube has led me to a successful pair of pants that fit me well. yours make most sense & logic to me. i have yet to put it to experience & see. but i'm very optimistic on your aproach. the white muzzlin pair you wore looks like a perfect fit that i'm looking for on my pants. (that's why i don't know what the mistake was)
you give wonderful instructions. easy to understand and follow, however, the mistake part that you indicated in part 1 & 2. i don't get it. i'm at a lose. i wish you'd just make a version without the error portion. it'd be much more pleasant to follow. because making pants fit is already a very frustrating, mission impossible thing.
@letmecomment2 You are right. This is one of my worst explained videos. It would be just as well to "wing it". There are different established patternmaking systems this is NOT one of them. I think I will finally at least put good pants instructions on my blog and eventually do a better pant video. Thanks for watching my other videos though!
@letmecomment2 The "mistake" was that I didn´t subtract what I took from the front thigh and added to the back. That is one of the reasons my muslin test pant was loose. But also because I sewed the muslin pant using smaller seams than I calculated. In "real" patternmaking you´re supposed to add seam allowances after the basic pattern is already made by tracing or cutting with a margin. But these are things a beginner can learn later. My goal is to take the "fear factor" out of sewing.
Hello, im from Venezuela and this is my first stop into your videos, you are wonderful at what you are doing, thanks for your shearing. (please excuse my English) I'm going to follow your classes and will do a pant for myself.
Please Is there a way you could fix audio is a little down and difficult to hear. Thank you so much. Scarlet
Gracias.
@jxw0587 Yes. I do need to do another pants video which will explain a bit more clearly. Meanwhile you can still make pants by sculpting a test pair to your body.
@fettuccinetube thanks for replying, clearer explanations would be great! your videos have been helpful thus far....... meanwhile i will draught a pair for practice
@1leopluradon You are right. I actually do have a blog. I don´t update it as much as I should. I have the skirt pattern up there I would like to get an improved explanation of the pants pattern up at some point too. Thank you for watching.
oh i love the way you explain how to get the mesurement and make the pattern. i would like to know if u teach how to make pattern for shirt and dress too thanks
Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you! This really helped me a lot.
One pointer though. The sound on these videos is really hard to follow. You should try to use a mic and record your voice then switch it to the audio for the video. That way there are no pets or outside noise to interrupt. =^__^=
Que lastima que no pude entender absolutament nada. Lo siento pero quede mas confundida de lo que ya estaba :(... Yo apriendo mas pasitos a pasitos, me confundi con los numeros de las medidas, porque decide que va a devedir a 4? IDK
Wow, I just watched your 3 lessons on pants and it was so helpful since I have been trying to make my mother some pants that fit her. You are also a crack up with the bird laughing when you made a mistake! I was laughing out loud! Anyhoo, thank you for this great lesson set, you are amazing! I am going to go and see your other tutorials right now!!!!
I am using centimeters. But in inches I think it would be the same. For example if your waist is 28 inches (I wish) you would divide that by four and get 7 and at the end you ad seam allowance and a little more if you don´t want the pants skin tight. You add in the areas you choose to to get the shape you want for your garment.
So for example if you want ot make "harem pants" you would make the thigh part of the pattern bigger and when you add the pant length you would gradually make it smaller towards your ankle (make sure your foot will still fit through). If it is your first time it is really best to make a test pant out of inexpensive fabric first so you can adjust for any errors or fitting problems. The crotch is usually the part where fitting problems arise. It is not an exact science.
and then maybe feed an elastic through a hem at the ankle part if you choose or snaps or buttons. I want to keep emphasizing that YOU are the designer. The best way to learn is to use inexpensive fabric at first so that you are not "afraid" to make mistakes. Mistakes are how you learn.
Sorry for going on so much but one really cheap way to get fabric is at church thrift shops or at flea markets. I have seen stained tablecloths for as low as US $2 ! An oversized man´s shirt, works to, any piece of clothing or fabric works. If it is too small you can patchwork different fabrics together. There are no rules!

ah, ok. i was wondering. I'm a big girl and my numbers should be bigger, but i now i know. I believe that 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters.
