@ifeelikepwningnoobs A chkdsk can only run on the C drive at boot. If your computer has a dirty drive, it will often run by itself. You need to run it with the "/r" switch to try to repair it. Whatever it is, something is seriously wrong with your machine if it is running quite frequently. You might consider checking out Defraggler as well.
@technoblogical Oh alright, just wanted to make sure. For anyone curious, deleted files can be recovered by certain programs out there. Off the top of my head, recuva and data+ are a couple I used. RESULTS ARE NEVER GUARANTEED since the fragmenting of files in the "RECYCLER" (deleted trash)... are randomly over-written. Thumbs up if this all sounds accurate
I got problem. When it starts up with Check Disk, it hanged at ''CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal''. I think it's hard disk failure so anyway to recover it?
i got some problems with my laptop....it runs the Startup Recovery but it when it's finished and restarted , it will runs the Startup Recovery again and again....is there any way to fix this ?
@xXtremeXpertZz Put in a Windows 7 Install disk. There is a "repair your computer" option on the first screen. There is even a command prompt there where you can run the command. You can also do a system restore from there. But It's easier to let Windows try to repair itself first.
@technoblogical Well, i tried it with a Windows XP Install disk, i couldn't even enter the setup because of this problem.Windows XP also had a repair option so i tought it would work, but it didn't!Will Windows 7 work?
@technoblogical I have the Stop 0x7b message and my laptop wont boot anymore AT ALL. It's currently on Windows 7 Home Premium but I have a Windows Vista Install CD (7 was installed when I bought it) I tried running chkdsk but on stage 4 of 5 it froze at 14% for OVER 8 Hours and I just cut it off. That was like two weeks ago. Can I just install Vista fresh or is the problem a lot deeper. Safe Mode also doesn't work or Last Configuration or even System Restore all leads to Stop 0x7b...
@armenboy121 Then look in all programs > accessories. It should be there. Remember to right click and run it as administrator if you are on Vista or 7.
@MrJosezub If this is Vista or 7, did you right click the command prompt and run as administrator? Are you an admin? Can you try to run chkdsk /R in safe mode? (F8@boot) You could try the chkntfs command instead. I assume you are not trying to run it on the wrong drive like your CD. A CD would be write protected. You could also try booting to a Vista/7 repair/install disc, trying to repair your computer from its command line. Just pick the right 1.That's a hard one. I can only offer questions.
ummm, i get this error message one my other computer, and it wont let me start the computer, ever when i go into safe mode, it takes mean to the same screen
That would be a good idea to try before a clean install. Is your machine XP? You'll need to go into the recovery console to do it. If this is Vista, you can do it through start up repair.
This is xp on a very old computer, I haven't got any recovery disks or the xp disk, I've tried getting into the recovery console but the screen switches so quickly I can't find the right key!
How do I run the chkdsk /F command on BIOS or something without loading the OS (my computer just stops the windows loading screen and has the *** STOP 0x0000007B thing every time I turn it on) I can't get to the login screen :,(
This is a serious situation. Are you able to get into windows? If so, start backing things up and then reinstall a clean version of Windows. You might spend days trying to repair it or hours starting over.
If Windows isn't starting, then either get a live Linux disk or install the hard drive in another computer and start copying your stuff down on third hard drive.
Right now im not able to get in. Its been like this for a few weeks was quite bad but i thought i had it fixed. For a while i could get in. Theres over 200 gbs of files i need on it. If i click safe mode, or repair it freezes for hours. This is a laptop and im not sure if i can put the hard drive in the pc?
Well, you can buy an adapter for it. It'll allow a 2.5 hard drive to connect to a 3.5 inch ribbon cable. You can also buy a hard drive enclosure for a 2.5 drive.
Or you could try a live Linux disc and copy data to a usb drive. I would recommend Ubuntu. It has a large support base for various hardware and is not that hard for regular Windows users.
How do i permanently ENABLE chkdsk?...google only shows results on how to disable it...please help...How to run chkdsk every time windows 7 starts?

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY RECOVER LOST FILES?! like DELETED files?!

@canoncola It'll try to fix the corrupted files, but even that is hoping for a lot. Deleted files are usually gone.

@xXtremeXpertZz Why would you try an XP disk on a Windows 7 computer? Would you remove a wing from a Boeing and try it on an Airbus?

Find some one with a XP CD. You can't get into recovery console without it. And that will be your only fix. (Other than just re-installing Windows.)
