This guy needs to go back re-research his history. The Knights of the Ku KLux Klan was started as a militia to protect Southern property owners and from the Yankees who were murdering, raping, pillaging and destroying what was left of the South at the end of the Civil War. Almost all of these Union troops were blacks who had fought on the Union side. This all started because of the hatred Lincoln was spreading about slavery when in fact the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery.
what always amazed me is that when a dozen klansmen came to town 500 people showed up to protest. But when one Louis Farrakhan came to town thousands of people paid money to hear him speak.
LOL...good try. This mantra regarding the Tea Party and racism is simply not working...you lemmings need to pick up a new tactic. No matter how much squealing you do you cannot change the facts.
I noticed he went to extremes NOT to mention the political affiliations. Who? People like Byrd of WV and the democrat party clan, to include the elites! D.C. Stephenson joined the Democratic Party and the Ku Klux Klan in 1920. Racism still remains a problem for liberals and progressives...a big problem. Margaret Sanger is a particular hero of the Clintons. Instead of simply throwing out talking points you hear from the dems some of you need to do a little research to find the truth
racism is a problem for the progressive, because we SEE it barely hidden in the GOP's (and the tea-paryt) discourse.. just look at how their politics affect the non-white, anti-immigration, xenophobic mentality, anti-mulsim, anti poor (which is more prevalent among non-white), etc...
Prof. Madison, The Klan in Indiana did violently attack Notre Dame in those big street fights. The Klan was the power behind the Democratic Party for a long time. Madison is correct that while they did not like black people and Jews, it was Catholics that really got their ire up.
The KKK was about RACIST Violent white people from all walks of life, the middle class were the leaders, but the lower classes carried out the violence and rapes against Black people.
@Auntkekebaby He is misinformed, or maybe he is parsing his words. My grandmother remember when she was a little girl, the klan marching down the avenue yelling out vile racial slurs at women, men and children, while at the same time holding the bible and carrying the flag. She told me that they would vandalize property and severely beat random people.
@shifragri You mean they were able to keep some of the record of their activities out of public record?? I am being sarcastic. Of course they were able to do that.
The professor is saying the KKK did not engage in violence specifically in the state of Indiana. They obviously did in other parts of the country. What he's saying is in Indiana during the 1920's the Klan was a civically minded social club enlisting educated and affluent members of community. His point is they weren't ignorant white trash, but rather a well-connected, influential and popular church-based group imposing their power on the rest of society.
@avmsf I gathered that. I’m familiar with the D.C. Stephenson/ Indiana story. His point regarding the role of the affluent community is actually very important. I just have a problem with the cavalier approach to the violence issue. My definition of violence is more nuanced. In this case, I feel it’s more like patriotic, hateful fervor. I don’t think a lot of the violence is documented. I also include the terror as a precursor to the violence.

The Ku Klux Klan doesn't hold very many rallies in Indiana like they use to.

@gedoug ya, they were democratic, what you fail to realize is that the democratic party now is pretty different than the democratic party then.
Today, KKK's member would find more affinity with the GOP.

Those who join the Klan in 1920's America were similar to those in German who join the NAZIS during the same period.
