hummers don't do rock crawling very well or tight trails ...or basicly any trail needing sweet articulation , but they will do mud and deep snow much much better than a jeep ,because of their ifs portal axles leaving almost nothing to hang them up in the mud/snow ...so h1 on 40-44 inch swapers would leave a solid axled jeep behing in the mud pits .
I would never in my life try something like this. Hell, I got my lifted F150 stuck going up a steep hill with a sharp flat landing (forgot what they call it when your frame bottoms out on the top of a hill), but this would just be death for my truck, lol. yeah hummers are pretty useless were i live, hundreds of kilometers of sand trails with closely packed trees. The jeep wasn't the failure here. The Jeep was working just fine. The mud was just too watery for the tractor tread. The Hummer would have sunken more quickly in that mudpit... notice the Hummer driver wasn't crazy enough to go INTO the mud... he just pulled safely from the side where a heavy 2wd could have given the same aide on hard packed ground.

the hmmwv is the same vehicle as a hummer. the only difference between the two are armor and spring rates. all Hummer H1's and HMMWV's come off the same production line.
In 92-93 they were very similar to military trucks, after that depending upon the year, civilian Hummers have much more in the way of electronics (TPS, PCM/FSD, TCM). Year by year, the differences between the two vary quite a bit.
i dont know too much about the specs of the land rover, but its a 98' freelander, 1.8 petrol (k series engine, and yes the head gasket went in 2000) i dont know the exact tyres but they were continentals, i cant check because the car was sold 2 weeks ago, and it had to deal with the mud in scottish moorland.

You need both. To get alot of torque..You get low gears to multiply the torque. But at the same time it reduces the wheelspeed..And you need wheelspeed to propel(clean) the mud out of the tread and get new grip.

Boggers are a line of tires from Interco Tire/Super Swamper. The thick thread takes in tons of mud making the tire very heavy..and on the huge ones it takes alot of power to be able to spin the tire so fast that the mud ejects out.. And if you have a stock 4 or 6 cylinder you usually change gears to keep the engine from bogging down or stalling.. But you also lower the wheelspeed which means your not flinging the mud out of the tread. Post3-
In mud alot of things make a difference..Engine power, torque, gears, tread of tire, size of tire..And driver skill. Driver skill above all else.
Also, this applies to your fathers land rover.. Sometimes when using a lower power motor you can use a less aggressive tread, and still be able to make it farther than if equiped with boggers. This is because the less aggressive tread weighs less when caked in mud, making them easier to spin, keeping them clean(better than a clogged drag slick).
the h1 may have potential...and it obviosly takes a stock jeep but for the price and practicallity a jeep is the best way to go..flex, its a jeep thing

Words of wisdom... most of the "expert" pontificators on here probably couldn't drive over a steep speed bump without crapping their pants in real life. I love how everyone thinks the footage above is a full length documentary on the pros and cons of each vehicle, and criticizes it as though every driver should have maximized difficulty in order to show capability... It was a simple recovery folks - that's all.

that's not a hummer... that's a Humvee, the thing the hummer was designed from. The Humvee handles terrain much worse than that, and that's just at it's test course...

No kidding...hmm look at the clearance on the hummer and look at the clearance on the Jeep it extracted by staying on dry ground. The Hummer would not even atempt that mud hole. God forbid if there was a tight trail with trees to go between and a mud hole like this..As for Bronco's I have seen alot wich are awesome and alot wich are crap.

No, no, no. you don`t get it. The hummer should have got in the soft stuff up to the diffs then pulled out the jeep. Any car/truck/horse/tug o war team could have pulled out the jeep from the location of the hummer.The Vid is just lame, a bit like the hummer, really.

dude, after the release of the Hummer, the publics version of the military Humvee, it doesnt surprise me that everyone gets them mixed up. That is not a Hummer, it's a HUMVEE that you see in this film, And the Humvee goes through tougher obstacles in it's training course than this..

the hmmwv is the same vehicle as a hummer. the only difference between the two are armor and spring rates. all Hummer H1's and HMMWV's come off the same production line.

In 92-93 they were very similar to military trucks, after that depending upon the year, civilian Hummers have much more in the way of electronics (TPS, PCM/FSD, TCM). Year by year, the differences between the two vary quite a bit.

i dont know too much about the specs of the land rover, but its a 98' freelander, 1.8 petrol (k series engine, and yes the head gasket went in 2000) i dont know the exact tyres but they were continentals, i cant check because the car was sold 2 weeks ago, and it had to deal with the mud in scottish moorland.

also, to add a point to this argument, and a slightly different one. do you know what cars they drive on this estate? funnily enough, they are all land rovers! 3 defenders, a freelander and they used to have a discovery. oh and they also have a flatbed van and a peugeot 206 diesel van (obviously not for offroad). and where i am, Edinburgh- the capital of Scotland-, do you know how many hummers there are? 1 and its sitting, unsold, in a garage.

You need both. To get alot of torque..You get low gears to multiply the torque. But at the same time it reduces the wheelspeed..And you need wheelspeed to propel(clean) the mud out of the tread and get new grip.

Wrong.. Spinning the tires cleans out the tread, providing new traction. Go through a hole and not spin your tires..See what happens. Boggers especially require ALOT of power and wheelspeed to clean out the thick tread and get grip.

Boggers are a line of tires from Interco Tire/Super Swamper. The thick thread takes in tons of mud making the tire very heavy..and on the huge ones it takes alot of power to be able to spin the tire so fast that the mud ejects out.. And if you have a stock 4 or 6 cylinder you usually change gears to keep the engine from bogging down or stalling.. But you also lower the wheelspeed which means your not flinging the mud out of the tread. Post3-

In mud alot of things make a difference..Engine power, torque, gears, tread of tire, size of tire..And driver skill. Driver skill above all else.
Also, this applies to your fathers land rover.. Sometimes when using a lower power motor you can use a less aggressive tread, and still be able to make it farther than if equiped with boggers. This is because the less aggressive tread weighs less when caked in mud, making them easier to spin, keeping them clean(better than a clogged drag slick).

You've gotta be totally ignorant in offroading to think a hummer in this application is better then a jeep. Hummers are way too heavy. Made to pull, carry, and offroad. But, their wide wheel base and long chassy make them far less superior then jeeps off-road unless they have serious modification. Anyone who knows anything about Off-road knows that.
