  • Ok really? Don't spout off stuff that isn't true. It was a decent video, but the new 300mm lenses, both the f4 and f2.8, are "real" 300's. The smaller filter size does not affect focal length. Focal length is determined by the distance of the rear element from the sensor plane.

  • @Booyaaa100 There is a minimum front element size required for every focal length and aperture combination. He is correct that, physically/optically, it is not possible to construct a 300mm f/4 with a round front element of less than 75mm in diameter. Maybe the 77mm-threaded 300mm f/4 has a 75mm front element and maybe it doesn't, but the general statement is accurate.

  • I have the same Lens It is great. I have a Dikon D-1 and D 100 Plus a F100 N008

The Lens works Great with all Nikon Auto Focus Cameras

Thank you for your Great Listing

  • go suck ken rockwell's nuts some more dude. You have no idea about engineering a lens.

  • wate of money

  • d60 and d80 same price? jajaja right! like the d3x and the d300 are the same price right?

  • Hey,

im in the need of a Telephoto prime lens (birding and wildlife) and i was also wondering for the AFS version, currently my uncle has a 70-300mm VR which i use most of the time, but the image quality isnt good at 300mm, so do you recommend me getting this lens? is it better than the 70-300mm? faster?

And does this lens take the TC14eII ?

    Thank you very much!!

  • @alfredojajaja Get this lens but the AF-S version. It is faster than the 70-300, sharper and yes it takes the TC14eII

  • Oh yea, and let us all know how well a polarizing element works out in the drop in filter slot.

  • why do you think canon sucks? just wondering.

  • LIKE YOUR NAME xD!!

  • Well it's the only video on this lens, so I thank you 'canonsucks' for posting.

No problem with using information such as what you mentioned about the f4 @ 300mm issue, but you should quote that as being from Ken Rockwell since that is probably who you got it from. That way when the information is incorrect he looks like the douche, not you :D

    Thanks again for the video!

  • you have to put the polarized filter on the front filter on the end of the lens not on the drop in filter...

  • a little gaffers tape and that lens hood will stay in place.

  • it would have been thicker if it was a 2.8 lens:)

  • and cost hella more :P

  • xaxa yep:P

  • sic lens! good price!

  • sorry to be bang on about this, but all that talking...you could've included an AF speed+AF noise demonstration. i think that's what most people want to know :)

  • Just checked out your profile. You have NO videos uploaded and from the comments that others have left for you it sounds like you are pretty much just on here to cause problems. Try posting up when you have some camera gear and know wtf you are talking about. Quit being a troll. If you are truly a photographer, post up your website, flickr account, smugmug account or any other account that you have your shots on. If not, then shut the f up. Thanks.

  • i made this video the day i got the lens. i tested out the AF-S lens last sunday. what i was saying that with the new lens, it is either shorter than the advertised 300mm but still f/4 OR it is 300mm but at a slightly slower aperture. it turned out to be the first option and being slightly short and a true f/4. f/4 means focal length divided by 4. 300 divided by 4 is 75 and if the filter size is 77mm that means that there is a 2mm margin. the lens barrel is thicker than that.

  • i rarely read his stuff, also the only way you could have known that. i went to my local camera store and compared my 300mm to the 300 AF-S and the AF-S lens was shorter (in terms of focal length). It was about 290mm

  • awesome my name is devon and i also want to be a photographer. yyyyyyyyaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome video Devin. I'm scoping out Adorama, B & H, KEH, Ebay and Craigslist for a 300 f/4. After finding your video I'm even more psyched for this lens. Thanks!

  • I like your video. What was Adorama's rating on the lens? Thanks

  • Adorama's rating was an E-

  • are you shooting that vid into a mirror or do you have some sort of left handed Nikon?? =P

oh, and watch you don't fall off the end of that mother... ;)

  • haha no, it is because of my webcam.

However, there was a left handed F100 made.

  • Ken was being facetious. :-)

  • Great video! I have the D300 as well and am on the lookout for a 300 f4. What do you mostly shoot?

  • i mostly shoot anything other than sports. if you look on my channel, i have a link to my flickr so you can see that. but i do shoot sports every so often but mainly in the daytime where f/4 is plenty fast.

  • ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm ehm

    stop saying ehm!

    otherwise nice review :P ^^

  • Nice lens. Although I don't ever run into those manual focus problems, I can see where that would be a pain. With the 30D, I simply flip the switch on the lens. But, with the USM motors, I never really have to manual focus.

Nice review and keep it up with the great vids!
