I honestly don't care if people want to do this. I just get a bit irritated with the canadian govt. over here using my tax money to pay for someone's full out sex change surgery. If they want it so bad they can friggin pay for it themselves. I can't get a free $30-60 eye checkup anymore but someone else can get a free sex change that costs thousands of bucks?

I don't recall saying the govt pays for everything plus is it so clownish to want health care paid for to benefit all rather than whims of the few? I'd rather have my taxes benefit the health/counselling systems to help everyone with suicidal issues among all groups; that includes people with transgender issues. But for plastic surgery to boost one's esteem is like paying for a celebrities boob job vs glasses for my near blind eyes

I feel like a lot of these idiots don't realize that these people had no choice. They were BROUGHT UP this way. The Fa'afafine was a way to make sure that the culture survived. To make sure that the generations to come would still see the awesome and amazing culture of Samoa. And I really hope that all of you Samoans on here commenting knew that. (cont.)we were taught to respect & follow the teachings of our elders. So, if we were taught to do household work & was given that task to do at hand... We had to do it. While growing up from there.. most males that took hold of the female roles... adapted to female features as a natural effect. In a way it WOULD be their choice but then again... it came natural. Being a NATURAL & COMMON thought... They grew to think, "If I'm doing a female task/role... Why not present myself as one?"

@lancer6t9 Maybe you could explain this cultural tradition to me then, because I'm pretty much lost on it. They keep calling it a "third gender", but that doesn't really make any sense. According to this documentary, and assuming it is all accurate, the Fa'adafines are men that have been chosen to take on the gender roles of females in Samoan society. Rather than that being a third gender, it sounds more like men adhering the female gender, thus making it still the female gender.
