For the next part I know what I'm talking about, I worked 3 years as an armourer( medieval armours, real stuff!) and studied medieval history. Samurai vs occidental knight it's a stupid concept for this: Japanese had less resources for making weapons by individual so they made armours with what they had on hand: Bamboo, bones and bronze. While Occident had plenty, they made much stronger armours. katana can't go through most hose they were made to cut flesh mainly. you simply can't compare.

Japanese steel did have more impurity, sulphur to be exact witch made the blades extremely brittle. If you ever watch 7 samurai witch is an extremely historical accurate movie you'll see katana breaking by hitting unarmoured guys. The reason why the katana was folded hundreds of time was to counter a part of that brittleness by making the blade more efficient at cutting.

@KaiNogard Quite large for a wakizashi. I assure you that it is a katana, albeit a low quality one. The blade looks like stainless steel to me. Thats the highlander replica by the way. Some wakizashi do have longer handles and blades, but not that long.

@KaiNogard A katana's blade length is (historically) from 24.5-28 inches. A wakizashi would be like 13-22 inches. In between that would be the kodachi. A katana isnt very long compared to Europe's long swords. If that sword's dimensions are a blade of 24.5-29 inches and handle of 9-14 inches, id say its a katana regardless of how small it looks on screen. Ive studied a lot in the past, but I may be wrong. You sure you arent confusing katana with daikatana?

Japan is not a superior country, it's a country like all others and some of their products can be surpassed by others. The Katana is indeed a fine weapon and I really fucking love it, but there are other great weapons out there, some that are even better engineered than the Katana.

And ever sword now it's useless in warfare, even a knife is more effective now a days, since it will only be used when no other options is left
