One more thing, Robert Plant covered this song. In my opinion the lead singer of "Led Zeppelin"(maybe you have heard of them) helped keep this song alive for other generations to listen to.
@bilby53 Some liked the covers and some didn't, that doesn't mean he was trying to make money off of the original pieces. Oh, and I suppose no one has ever covered artists like Elvis, or The Beatles; get a clue who ever you are, look in the mirror, and try to figure out a way to increase you IQ...or maybe cut out the reverse racism and work for a change. With all of that being said, great song by Phil Phillips...a classic.
@bilby 53: Can I say...reverse racism? Or lack of knowledge? Covering songs is noted as a piece of respect to the artists who originally composed them (not to mention artists get a share of the money after it is covered). Lets talk about the HORRIBLE covers by the "hip hop" world today. You're going to sit on your a** and say a certain color (white) made money of of these originals. Seal has covered a number of songs done by the great Otis Redding.
Pay Phil Phillips his royalties! Too many in the music business have been cheated. It's time for justice. Do what's right! One of the best records ever.
All the cover versions of black artist songs in this era by 'clean cut' American white boys was a disgrace. Phil Phillips deserves to be compensated by the industry that denied him his rights. Shame on all those white executives who unjustly and unscrupulously syphoned the money into their own pockets. He is now 85 and what would it take to make his final years more comfortable as well as his family? Not much at all. Don't leave it until it is too late but I feel it will never happen.
Let's remember that Phil Phillips was a working stiff when he recorded this song, for which he was paid a salary. He was not Nat King Cole. Show business is a bitch. How many actors in NY and LA wait tables and drive cabs to pay the rent? This man made a beautiful song, but he was not a star, nor did he ever become one. He never had another hit. That does not entitle him to a life of riches.
For years I have enjoyed singing this song in Karaoke Bars in Japan ... This is the version that gave me my pipes, not the the Honeydrippers as most of the young Americans thought ... Now that I'm back in the States, I have to admit I miss those time in Japan ...
louisalit, don't blame capitalism.you may get an argument from michael jackson's family or elvis and all the rest.mr. phillips had bad management and probably was a nice trusting soul.many other recording stars from this generation made plenty on residuals and some got "screwed".always easy to blame the system but today's generation seems to always play the victim and not take any personal responsibility.i feel bad for mr.phillips but most of the fault lies within.
Greedy oink-oink pigs are the problem with so-called capitalism. Capitalism is not God; yet for many it is a false religion, the banner of which has become the phony justification for their avarice! Saw something the other day: $40 thousand spent on a baby's first birthday party. Where are our brains? Anyone know how to spell sick "excess"? How about "ethics"? Consciousless, we plot and plot; one day we'll rot! Excess and lack of morality--self--that's why we're going down.
@ dogcat126 THE HARDER THEY COME, THE HARDER THEY FALL is a awesome movie! Saw it as a 17 yr old girl my first date with my now husband at an art house theater - to this day the soundtrack is my all time favorite music
I remember this song back in the 50's I Thought he was a white guy. Great song. I got a lot
of loving from a certain girl listen to this song, Sea Of Heartbreak from Suzie Baby'
Reminds me of one Saturday Night after midnight driving home went around a curve.
My door came open, all my records went out all over the side of the road. Some of the white guys sounded black. It was all good. You can't beat the music of the 50;s.
i am 63 and i got to hear this song when it first came out! so many soul artists got screwed on the royalties-really horrible as they deserved them!! it was even worse in jamaica-jimmy cliff did a movie about how bad it was for the musicians down there-THE HARDER THEY COME, THE HARDER THEY FALL. he is great too as are so many soul artists from there and of course here and all over the world!!! i was so lucky to have grown up hearing them all!!! thanks soso much for posting!!!!
I just read a book called Sea of Love by Jamie Ponti and this song was like the center of the book. It was so romantic! In the end the main guy character whispers this to the main girl while they are slow dancing on a roof top. <3 It other words... I'm crying... :)
@keeljoy247 - sorry having to sound this way, but this is just a fact. Saggy pants where you can see ass cracks and underwear, cussing and cursing in every sentence, calling each other nigger, ho, bitch, motherfucker, not a single rap/hip-hop song I have heard in the past 15 years that doesn't have some sort of derogative words against cops, family, own race in it, robbing, killing an every day occurrence, high unemployment cuz it's easier to live of welfare, lost morality, drugs...
@keeljoy247 Believe me, I wish I could talk different about the black race - but I can't. I am pretty sure MLK would be ashamed if he'd see what happened to his people. And every upstanding black person should be too, because they are being put down because of the 95% of blacks that just can't get a grip on their lives.
@ilovecookaysxP -it does matter. why do you think blacks have such a high unemployment rate....RIGHT, cuz nobody understands anymore what the heck they are saying....not even those blacks who enjoyed a good education but grew up in the ghetto.
I've listened to this song since I was in the 6th grade and I had my first crush on a girl. Valentines day came along, left a bear w/ chocolate on a desk before school started and It had a not specifically for her. Finally told her that I did it in 9th grade. Thank you for the enthusiasm of love Phil! I guess the Penguins helped too with Earth Angel.
Beautiful song! A bit scary though, for us who saw "Sea of Love". The singer has been very badly treated economically. Wikipedia quote:
" In 1959 it sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[3] Nonetheless, Phillips was paid only $6800, and received no further royalties for the song or its recording.[4]." .
@Adjei88 While it might seem that this only happened to black singers, there were plenty of white singers who were also short changed. The record companies and their lawyers of that time were equal opportunity crooks. Not surprisingly, the artists were not sophisticated enough to understand that they were often signing away most of their rights in order for a shot at stardom.
@louisalit According to inflation rates and supposing that selling $13 dollar CD's at a number of a million nets you $5,000,000, he was paid a little over ONE PERCENT of what he was owed. Of course this is not accounting for the difference in tax rates, but if those are taken into account, he probably got paid a little over two, maybe three percent of what he was owed. What a fucking travesty.

Now here's a memory from '59 that was covered by the Honeydrippers in 1983/84. It sounded so similiar to Phil Phillips that you'd honestly think that Phil was still the lead vocalist many years later. Thx4 postin'
@pallatanga A band? Durr. Lol ;o) YouTube search: Cat Power - Sea of Love. I guess you could catagorize it as typical "hipster" music. It sounds pretty different than this version.
@hope11ification yes, and if anything, it was the song that inspired the movie. Pacino was ok, but nothing spectacular. Was better in Dog Day Afternoon

Thumbs up if your here because of CAT POWER!!!
heliumexplosion420 5 months ago
@hope11ification yes, and if anything, it was the song that inspired the movie. Pacino was ok, but nothing spectacular. Was better in Dog Day Afternoon

WHOA, "Cat Power" did a cover of this song... which is how I know it and thought it was an original of theirs.
Obviously, the actual original always is the best. :o) Very good song!
