  • i dont necesarily pray with my thumbs stickin out... lol

  • 0:55 - SSSSHHHHWOOOSH

  • Very good lesson i.m.ho!!!

  • when i slap the note sounds metallic and it rings. i dont kno what to do! please help!

  • @TheNamesm Where are you slapping? If your not already, try and get your thumb to strike just above the start of the fretboard, thats where the thumb comes from :p

  • can i play it on a four string?

  • AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!! I CAN'T DO THIS!

GRRRRR, I can't make the slappy sound, I try really hard I just can't

  • @LegoDoremi114 you have to bounce it off really fast, and if that doesnt work it may be your high and lows set up bad or it may be just ur bass

  • you have the most epic concentration face ever

  • How do you slap the A string???

  • i have that bass. sept its a 5 string

  • 5-string basses don't slap well at all. 4-strings are better.

  • Why do the comments have to have an elitist tone to them. The vid is here as a beginners guide. My students start out afraid that the strings are going to bite them if they touch them. I'm on here looking for good starter vids to link them to for use at home, and I'm reading comments about how much better someone else can do this, or how badly the guy that took the time to, did it.....If you got it together so much better, don't waste your time posting....upload the solution!

  • The dude is demonstrating a technique not auditioning. I personally appreciate him explaining it in slo mo..Most people come on here to show off instead of providing instruction. With practice we all become proficient. Pretty damned insecure to critisize this lesson...Thanx

  • Oh my god in the first minute you made me realize why I haven't been able to play slap bass, I love you

  • Awesom playing man! I hope you have much success!

    Bob

  • Thanks, the video helped me out a lot!

  • I have to ask, I use a Fullerton bass. Active pickups. I believe I am doing this correctly, but it sounds like sh*t. Even when I do it slow and precise, it doesn't have that funky sound. Is there a particular setup or something I can do to get the right sound?

  • This actually taught me how to slap

  • I wanted to play guitar, but the bass looks and sounds way better!

  • that's very helpful, thx

  • thanks. really good lesson. proper way of showing people what to do.

all the other people just seem to be playing and showing off in there "lessons"

  • slapping an individual string is just a matter of getting the feel of the bass and practicing precision- there is no easy way to get around that part really- in time you get more and more accurate. muting the strings with your left hand is usefull at many situations but there are some situations where you just can't do that, like very rapid and fast slap solos, that is where the precision kicks in. great video man- SLAP ON!!! :-D sorry for my bad english

  • Me too , candy apple red 5 string. 1988 model, LOL.

  • Thank you soo much, before I can't do a slap and now I can !! I didn't hit the string with the good part of my finger

  • cool thanks

  • All the people hating on this guy, should probably take a nice long look in the mirror. And YES, that means with the light ON for those of you who cannot bare your own sight lmao!

He's trying to educate those who are beginning and he doesn't a decent job of getting his message across. So instead of bashing his helpful video, remember LIGHTS ON you sad sonza bitches!!!

  • i have that bass. sept its a 4 string

  • i get more of a slappy sound than you, with my guitar. and i usualy hit mine more of in between the pickups on a bass. gets more of that slappy sound man

  • really doesnt matter if your black or white..shut up..yeah theres marcus, stanley, and victor but there's other great ones out there too..they just like blues/soul/funk/jazz..

  • Ok, no white kids allowed to play bass. That is the new rule. This kid makes me feel ashamed to be white. Learn how to play, knucklehead.

  • Man, I don't get those afro-americans (I can't say black people because it's racism -.-) always complaining they're being discriminated, but you do it yourself, knucklehead. God the hypocrisy... Good video btw.

  • lol You Are AWESOME!!! hahahaha!!

  • What did he do wrong? Maybe... nothing?

No need to talk about what whites are allowed and what not.

You should feel ashamed, because you wrote this.

  • Ok motherfucker. The greats are white, Geddy Lee, Flea, Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, Chuck Garric, and Gene Simmons. Quit acting cool on youtube motherfucker. We all know you live with your mom and jack off to Transformers

  • not a smooth sound!

  • do you just pound on the string with your thumb?

  • No, you have to bounce it off or you'll just get a crappy tone.

  • how do you not hit the other strings?

  • First off you just need practice in order to get more accurate slaps, and yeah, avoiding the other strings is more or less not possible.

What you do is that you use your left hand fingers to mute the strings you don't want to hit. Which fingers you use depends on the fingers you have free as you still want to use some of them to actually play something.

I use my pinky finger and even the thumb a lot to mute, but it all comes as you practice, you've got to find your own way of doing it.

  • does the pop have to be on the same string that you popped?

  • man u helped me alot, i'm 13 years old and i wanna play bass alot, i like slapping and popping the most, so i think you helped me alot

    THX 5/5

  • timing pleas

  • it was helpful

  • We are done here.

  • Dudes, stop giving him all this crap. This video realy helped me a lot, so screw you guys. This is the proof you don't have to be REALY good to teach beginners.

  • I'm no pro at bass...but I've been in music for 12 years otherwise and I know what a groove sounds like...and that opening lick didn't groove.

  • for me right now its not necessarily about the grove so much as the technique

  • thanks for the lesson homie. it was definitely helpful :-)

  • It's a schecter custom-5. i have the same bass

  • you're not even close to be being black enough to play slap bass

  • That was racist!!!!

  • Dude you should practice a lot.. you sound sucks.... Even a kid can play that one

  • wish you taught with a metronome or summink

  • You should spend some time getting good before you decide to post a teaching video on a subject you in no way have down yet.

  • great lesson. im just having a difficult time seeing what your playing becuase your not on a 4 string like myself.

  • That Schecter Bass is the sexiest bass on the face of the earth. I love the Stiletto

  • Schecter FTW! Schecter Stiletto Deluxe was my first bass!

  • fuck you bitch

  • 0:56 ssss.... uhhhumm...

    hahahahaha

Ler na hora da gravação é foda, véio.

  • Very good lesson I learned play with this lesson

  • heheheheheheheh !!!!! This is hahahahahahah

  • realllllllllly quick... do tighter strings make it easier to slap?

  • well, i find on the higher string (D,G) its hard to slap but its wayyyy easier to pop.

so personally i wouldnt suggest getting tighter strings :D

  • tnx men.

  • Thank You

  • super helpful, Thanks!!!!

  • that helped man , thanks

  • Its a decent beginner lesson. Only thing is, why learn a from just a decent video?

Anyone that does not have any idea how to slap, don't watch this. Find something from someone with a bit more skill.

  • y? do u know of something better? what i need to learn is how to make the strings (slapped) louder and not make the other strings sound at the same time

  • Search Alexis Sklarevski and watch his instructional videos on youtube.

I might put up a few videos too. Yea, that sounds like a good idea.

  • Try hitting the string with the exact same point of your thumb over and over again,

Try to hit it with the bone ( joint) in your thumb.

practice alot to get more accurate in hittin the string

  • you are strange man... nothing personal...

  • this actually helped me alot

  • hey, i dont have a bass at the mo but can anyone tell me how big they are?

  • pretty big

  • Do you want the full size or just the fretboard? And it's not exact... Just look at videos

  • the full size. is it much bigger than a full size electric guitar?

  • A bit. Man... Just see one!

  • For me, you must more learn to teach a proper technique, but everybody can play bass like he likes.

  • nice schecter

  • your pretty sloppy, you sure you can handle that 6 string?

  • its a 5 string

  • Counting must not be his strong point.

  • my bad its hard to tell sometimes especially on low res vids

  • You suck as a teacher....and you suck at slap poppin. Anyone really wanna learn look up schecter5strg

  • i'm getting the slap but the pop is kinda difficult!

  • you bass sound like shit... it is not for slap/poping!!

  • I forgot, how do you get that exact punch sound out of the bass?

  • Awesome lesson man!!! But how would you play slap bass with a four string.

  • nice lessons dude, you are kool, but i still don't get it, anyway, very kool video

  • very good!

  • Awesome lesson anyways :) have been looking for such a descriping and detailed one, as this ^^ Thanks!

  • love the facial expressions! good job anyways.. and i like your fret board

  • everytime i slap, i get a harmonic, can anyone help?

  • It could be your set up. try turning your bass up (not the instrument, the tuning) and your treble. Also turn down your mid. Not totally off but lower. Also make sure you push down hard enough on the frets.l

  • play closer to the frets and play push down harder..?

  • so many -ve remarks! i actually think this is helpful.

  • I guess he isn't a virtous, but that is a good thing. me, as a newbie, understand this lesson much better than all the other on youtube. 2 thumbs up for you!

  • I think anyone looking up a tutorial on bass slapping on youtube would be using a 4 stringed bass...

  • some of the best slappers in the world are playing 5 and 6 string basses.

  • Yeah my favorite bassist slaps a 6 string. Really amazing.

  • i love teh natural 4 string basses. because tehy are the most used ones in the punk music :)

  • I like punk like crazy...but have a 5 string...it's always good to have an extra dynamic. And plus, punk music is naturally not very hard. Most punk musicians start off not that good..and once they get good, they aren't punk : /

  • yes, but i love the 4-string basses xD

but i would play on an 5 string too. but not iif i could decide between a 4 and 5 string

  • I would choose a 5 string for the dynamic...but it's all opinion :).

  • PS. do a quick search for slap bass here on youtube before you post a video thinkin your the shit.

  • fuck this guy he ain't good enough to fuckin teach. the ugly face doesn't help either. give it up and put the bass down. and close your retard mouth you got no sense of rythym whatsoever.

  • alright...let's see you post a better video

  • I don't think you deserve all these thumbs down, you obviously know what you're talking about.

  • I agree. This guy is very sloppy.

  • This guy needs some lessons himself.

  • i agree

  • This video helped me out A LOT! I actualy checked this out today, and I finally get slap bass. Thank you for the technique! Very helpful! I always loved the sounds of slap and pop on a bass, and never could play it...now I can!! Thanks again

  • Even if I watch this video every day and practice EXTRA hard all the time, I still don't think I'd manage to be as much of a retard as this butt-monkey. If you're learning to play slap bass and have stumbled across this video, do yourself a favour and go to the kitchen and make a sandwhich until it is over.

  • im having some trouble do i slap the strings straight down or at an angle?

  • I'm sick ... slap my ass? ha ha ha

  • im sort of scared im going to break the strings when i pull up to pop, is there a chance the streings will break when i pull up?

  • i don't play bass but i am pretty sure the strings are not going to break because i do the same thing on my guitar and i still have the same set of strings. the bass strings are way more solid. they should break/rip or w/e.

  • you dont have to worry about breaking a string popping. in fact in my five years of playing i've never broken a bass string

  • tnxx....

  • you suck

  • dude not bad although Shecters suck LOL

  • i know to damn thick ugly feel i got an ibanez sr505 its way better than this

  • schecter > ibanez

  • I'D SLAP THAT ALL NIGHT LONG!!!

  • I'd like to slap your bass ;)

  • blder iğrenç calmışsın açıkcası

  • put your strap up!

  • what the hell he cant even play in time wht a spaz

  • i think my strings suck cause when i slap like he did they just make a terrible claging sound

  • i think it means your pickups are to high, if you press the low E down, and it touches the pcikup and makes that popping sound, and thats what youre hearing, you need to lower them, just use a screwdriver :)

  • buen bajo de 6 cuerdas

  • 5 cuerdas u dumb

  • I'm no god on bass, I slap with my thumb down and have shitty technique, but I can get a better sound out of my bass than this ass clown. Seriously? Slap bass lesson? You call yourself a teacher and you're not even slapping with your thumb up? gtfo.

  • I don't really see what your point is with the angle of the thumb, I've seen many different professional bassists slapping with their thumbs at different angles however I REALLY do agree with you about this guy, He shouldn't really be teaching a technique he hasn't yet gotten to grips with himself and it's presented quite professionally which surprised me a little considering how truly awful it was. Sorry, But there's no escaping that it was awful.

  • You're supposed to have your thumb parallel to the string your slapping. Professional bassists, such as Flea, don't hit their string with their thumb being parallel, but its possible to play slap without your thumb being parallel.

  • That made no sense, Firstly we regarded Flea to be a GOOD example of a slap bassist....So you lost me from the beginning But you then said I should have my thumb parallel but I can do it without my thumb parallel and Flea the 'professional' bassist doesn't have his thumb paralell either? I've lost you here.

  • The CORRECT way to slap is to have your thumb parallel to the strings. It is POSSIBLE to slap with out having your thumb parallel to the strings.

Sorry if I didn't make sense, I'm sick.

  • That's alright, makes sense now, actually I've been noticing a lot of variation in the way different bassists play with different angles of the thumb and I was looking quite literally for a straight forward answer as to what the traditional way to play was.

  • TO ALL NEGATIVE COMMENTS stop the critic all you shit head if you have a better one then try to post loser......

  • thx this is great

  • yeah you helped me alot man cheers im getting on much better now ;)

  • nice, it helped a lot of beginners for sure.(beginners to slapping)

  • yep nice i got it now ! :)

  • this lesson helped me big time..thanxx man =)))

  • amazing fucking NOTHING. hey MAN you give people wrong techniques, you must exercise your tempo, and you don't have a good feeling in a bass, you don't play bass man, please don't add other lessons because you're fucking wrong, PLEASE STOP DOING THIS

  • well this lesson helped me :) and by the looks of it, alot of other ppl too :)))

  • ha ha i have that bass its a dam good one too... :) anyway...this vid helped me alot...thanks man

  • i have a friend... he is a ninja...

he always said... "It is better to have a sushi in your hand, then a shrimp in your ass."

    Never understand that ;(

  • great lesson, it really helped me alot, thanks.

  • MUY BUENO!!

  • ive been using this video to learn slap and pop and its helping a lot.

  • es bueno ...

    pero ia lo sabia....ja

  • well done

  • This is what happen now in this days , people who is NOT able to teach or wanna be's are teaching students with wrong techniques and without the real sense of music ," You can't run if you don't know how to walk " , , The best thing to learn any instrument is learning how to play using the tempo and the taste , learning the " EASY " things but if you analize this are not really easy things but you have to start from the base of anything later on everything will become easier even the hard things

  • I agree its not the best technique but you get what you pay for and youtube is free lol...hope you haven't posted any grammar videos lately

  • this helped a lot man thanks

  • Who told you you're able to teach ? , first you need to work on your tempo , technique and taste to play , take the time to work on those things and care about yourself first .

  • Dam I agree dude, I am a fucking beginner at slapping and I watched this video expecting to learn, not realizing I can slap better than this clown

  • easy man....

  • It's a Schector bass and by the way, terrible tone. I think you need to work on your slap a little more.

  • if you don't believe in god, how can you make like a prayer???

  • its a ibanez bass or?

  • THANKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS good video

  • hey thanks!! it helped alot!

  • thanks that was great :D it helped alot

  • Thanks alot for that mate.

  • I think he is good. He is definitely a good teacher. This is the best slap bass lesson video i have found on youtube so far so i rate this video pretty high. thank you for the post very helpful.

  • Not a very good player imho, but he sure does explain it right. That's what the video is about. Learning slap bass. Not a video that shows you another "good" bass player.

  • cool guitar man. u need practice

  • he looks kinda weird but he tought me how to do it right o.o :)
