@TheNamesm Where are you slapping? If your not already, try and get your thumb to strike just above the start of the fretboard, thats where the thumb comes from :p
Why do the comments have to have an elitist tone to them. The vid is here as a beginners guide. My students start out afraid that the strings are going to bite them if they touch them. I'm on here looking for good starter vids to link them to for use at home, and I'm reading comments about how much better someone else can do this, or how badly the guy that took the time to, did it.....If you got it together so much better, don't waste your time posting....upload the solution!
The dude is demonstrating a technique not auditioning. I personally appreciate him explaining it in slo mo..Most people come on here to show off instead of providing instruction. With practice we all become proficient. Pretty damned insecure to critisize this lesson...Thanx
I have to ask, I use a Fullerton bass. Active pickups. I believe I am doing this correctly, but it sounds like sh*t. Even when I do it slow and precise, it doesn't have that funky sound. Is there a particular setup or something I can do to get the right sound?
slapping an individual string is just a matter of getting the feel of the bass and practicing precision- there is no easy way to get around that part really- in time you get more and more accurate. muting the strings with your left hand is usefull at many situations but there are some situations where you just can't do that, like very rapid and fast slap solos, that is where the precision kicks in. great video man- SLAP ON!!! :-D sorry for my bad english
All the people hating on this guy, should probably take a nice long look in the mirror. And YES, that means with the light ON for those of you who cannot bare your own sight lmao!
He's trying to educate those who are beginning and he doesn't a decent job of getting his message across. So instead of bashing his helpful video, remember LIGHTS ON you sad sonza bitches!!!
i get more of a slappy sound than you, with my guitar. and i usualy hit mine more of in between the pickups on a bass. gets more of that slappy sound man
really doesnt matter if your black or white..shut up..yeah theres marcus, stanley, and victor but there's other great ones out there too..they just like blues/soul/funk/jazz..
Man, I don't get those afro-americans (I can't say black people because it's racism -.-) always complaining they're being discriminated, but you do it yourself, knucklehead. God the hypocrisy... Good video btw.
Ok motherfucker. The greats are white, Geddy Lee, Flea, Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, Chuck Garric, and Gene Simmons. Quit acting cool on youtube motherfucker. We all know you live with your mom and jack off to Transformers
First off you just need practice in order to get more accurate slaps, and yeah, avoiding the other strings is more or less not possible.
What you do is that you use your left hand fingers to mute the strings you don't want to hit. Which fingers you use depends on the fingers you have free as you still want to use some of them to actually play something.
I use my pinky finger and even the thumb a lot to mute, but it all comes as you practice, you've got to find your own way of doing it.
Dudes, stop giving him all this crap. This video realy helped me a lot, so screw you guys. This is the proof you don't have to be REALY good to teach beginners.
y? do u know of something better? what i need to learn is how to make the strings (slapped) louder and not make the other strings sound at the same time
It could be your set up. try turning your bass up (not the instrument, the tuning) and your treble. Also turn down your mid. Not totally off but lower. Also make sure you push down hard enough on the frets.l
I guess he isn't a virtous, but that is a good thing. me, as a newbie, understand this lesson much better than all the other on youtube. 2 thumbs up for you!
I like punk like crazy...but have a 5 string...it's always good to have an extra dynamic. And plus, punk music is naturally not very hard. Most punk musicians start off not that good..and once they get good, they aren't punk : /
fuck this guy he ain't good enough to fuckin teach. the ugly face doesn't help either. give it up and put the bass down. and close your retard mouth you got no sense of rythym whatsoever.
This video helped me out A LOT! I actualy checked this out today, and I finally get slap bass. Thank you for the technique! Very helpful! I always loved the sounds of slap and pop on a bass, and never could play it...now I can!! Thanks again
Even if I watch this video every day and practice EXTRA hard all the time, I still don't think I'd manage to be as much of a retard as this butt-monkey. i don't play bass but i am pretty sure the strings are not going to break because i do the same thing on my guitar and i still have the same set of strings. the bass strings are way more solid. they should break/rip or w/e.

Sorry, But there's no escaping that it was awful.
You're supposed to have your thumb parallel to the string your slapping. Professional bassists, such as Flea, don't hit their string with their thumb being parallel, but its possible to play slap without your thumb being parallel.
That made no sense, Firstly we regarded Flea to be a GOOD example of a slap bassist....So you lost me from the beginning But you then said I should have my thumb parallel but I can do it without my thumb parallel and Flea the 'professional' bassist doesn't have his thumb paralell either? I've lost you here.
That's alright, makes sense now, actually I've been noticing a lot of variation in the way different bassists play with different angles of the thumb and I was looking quite literally for a straight forward answer as to what the traditional way to play was.
