  • Do what they did in the simpsons giant glass dome over city will stop the fire by suffocating it and the 11 residents.

  • What is sad is that if the fire isn't put out, the coal seems lead to other towns. Mount Carmel would be a direct hit. The type of coal that was burning is very intense. Once it gets started, there is no stopping. They would have had to gain control with in a twenty four hour time frame in order to stop it. Although by the time the U.S Government was alerted, it was too late. If you want to blame anyone, Blame the Mayor an the local government for failing to report this to MSHA and others

  • today Oboma is spending about 200 million a day for his trip to china + 37 war ships sitting at sea in waiting..that is equal to the spending on the iraq war......but they won't spend on this tragedy..coal burning is the number release of mehtil mercury which is the most toxic of poisons 2 days ago they tested 192 freshwater fish and 192 tested positive for mercury..I read the report..dept. of enviromental protection DID NOT test for methil mercury, they tested for other forms instead....why ?

  • I remember reading about the Centralia fire decades ago in Life magazine. I didn't realize the thing was still on fire.

  • The gov. actually knows how to put fire out and save coal but at the time they didn't want to waste their time because the need for the coal wasnt there but now that economy is rough they will be reconsidering it

  • wow incredible that the us gov still hasnt stepped in and tried to put the fire out,its a shame that the whole town has been levelled it should have been left as a warning to us ,that we cant take everything for granted, and we still carry one raping mother earth today, god protect the people still there .

  • @hunterkiller45 The feds did try to put out the fire. It was just deemed to be impossible to do it because of the vast supply of coal. They would have had to build a pipeline to the Atlantic to get enough water in to do it.

  • now they are completely leveling the whole town out

  • How did u breath there?! I thought that smoke coming up was toxic. O_O

  • What is this song? Hauntingly beautiful.

  • @jvoe3211 i put it together in Garageband

  • @Lostsocks

oh my god you wrote this ? seriously ? its stunning.. i wish i had it to listen to... its very affecting

  • It shure as hell beats a horror movie! I wouldn't like to get stuck there at night

  • @DariusIulius It's no different at night, it's actually pretty cool.

  • on the center of the fire.....fukin a lot adventure its goes there

  • the people there dont care if you o in to the town and there is a deal being made with a local coal company here to dig around the fire with a drag line to stop it still waiting for it too pass

  • This is fuckin incredable!

  • a lot of original home owners thought the goverment was after the mineral rights which the residents mostly owned due to the lack of federal help for many years

  • I live close to here and I've heard that it's actually really dangerous to go there because the people that live there are really against people coming into the town. I don't know if this is true I have yet to visit but I'd like to someday. It is a very sad story

  • I don't think the people are hostile or unfriendly. I think they may get a little annoyed sometimes. Just like anyone else they deserve their privacy.

As long as you don't go on their property, and leave them alone and don't cause a problem, I don't think they mind, at least I hope they don't mind

  • Beautiful music, relevant to the story.

    "Short-sighted government" exactly.

  • SONG PLEASE??

  • so how did it happen, the fire and why has no one stoped it? is it to hot? or dose no one care to try?

  • ladylilith- Buy the book Unseen Danger: A Tragedy of People, Government, and the Centralia Mine Fire. (Amazon) 1962: landfill garbage supposedly incinerated by the borough ignited a coal seam below, but gov. stalled & by the time they did anything the fire was too big. It was a game of catch-up & the fire kept winning. The ground underneath Centralia is honeycombed w/dozens of miles of mining tunnels. Much of the coal underneath is on fire. You might as well try to extinguish Hell!

  • oh right i see, my god poor place

  • it would be almost impossible to extinguish a fire that's both underground and expansive over an entire town.

  • well you cant stop it. especially one such as this. its been burning for an extremley long time and has enough coal and what not to fuel the fire for an estimated 1000 years. you cant really put it out. you cant deprive it over oxygen becuase its in a mine and anything underground theres always a secret hole undiscoverd that will let oxygen in. you cant drown it becuase water tries to find the easiest way out of a closed area. so not much can be done to help

  • ppl were burning trash and it lit up a coal vain and its way to big now to put out

  • I was just here today and i swear there are more cracks in the old route 61 than there was the last time i was there a year ago!

  • I need to find a house here, I've been trying to find real estate in Centralia for months now, and am yet to find any. Don't think I'll be finding a house any time soon though...

  • y the hell would u buy a house there

  • I live only like 15 minutes from Centralia. I'm actually gonna take a trip down tommorrow, maybe I'll post a video on youtube.

It really is a sad, but interesting place to visit

  • The fire was a result of burning garbage which spread to a partially exposed coal seam. Check it out on Wiki, they have some good info and links to resources which should get you started.

  • SO the fire was started by mining work? And how is it that its still burning? I would like to know the full story on this, any websites i can go to?

  • The fire started when Centralia workers were burning garbage behind one of the cemetarys (which was over a coal mine) Flames got through a seam, and now the fire is being fueled by the anthracite coal that lies under Centralia. The fire is supose to go out in a few years (i think)

  • more like 250 years at the very least.

  • normalnie szok na maxa

  • I tried to find a house for sale in Centralia for like 4 hours this morning. It's one of the few places left in the country that isn't filled with people.

  • very well crafted. Very well produced and very moving! Powerful, silence is the enemy of this poor lost town. If the government would have stepped in this once thriving town may yet still be here, but instead it is reduced to ruble and the mindless fools come every year to kick her down a little further.

  • Why did this stormrider66 get thumbs down? Silly people.

  • Thanks for supporting my thoughts.

  • People like to trash the buildings there? Why? You would think you would want to preserve a rare place like this. I really hate people sometimes.

  • well *supposedly* this is an Ghost town

  • I live very close to Centralia (its actaully in my school district) To tell you the truth, theres nothing to preserve, its just a mine fire and a few houses now..theres a population of 10 now since the original mayor died a few years ago. He was 87 I believe. In a few years the fire will stop and maybe Centralia will be rebuilt.

  • the fire has enough fuel to burn for at least 100 years

  • ya and its about close to 50 years now, about 1/2 way done =P

and i want to correct myself, theres 11 people living in Centralia now

  • did someone have a kid or something?

  • i wana take a trip there is the old town still there and is it blocked off?

  • yes it is and nope its not

  • sweet cuz i wanted to explore the empty houses but i heard they were knocked down. i also heard national guard was blocking off the area.

  • I dont believe there are empty house, and nope there not, its open to the public

  • cool well i heard there was literly a whole abondend town i guess they knocked the buildings down welp im deff going quadin there

  • ya people can be assholes who vist centralia, they like to trash stuff, i get pissed every time i see the destruction that people do there.

  • Not bad-decent camera work. For once a Centralia video that doesn't suck!

  • Every time I go back up to Centralia I see that others were there. Why do people have the need to smash and trash the buildings. Centralia IS NOT a haunted town. Was my home untill 1978. I would love to get the money and help to RESTORE the buildings that stand in the town.

  • i must go to this town it reminds me so much of silent hill

  • It's the town Silent Hill is based on.

  • i know lol... im just saying

  • Ooops, sorry.

  • i banged a girl in centralia

  • was she a faceless zombie nurse?

  • something like that

  • I wounder what it would be like going there in the dark.. :-)lol i'm going to have to go and video tape it for you guys..lol j/k i'm to chicken to

  • i visited centralia at night... you can't see what the heck is going on so it's best to go in daytime, especially if you don't know where you're going. but it is creepy at night we walked around a bit too with just flashlights before driving around.

  • It's your opinion whether you belive in that stuff or not, I for one...do. Good movie though, I wanna visit Centralia some day.

  • Bull. I have like 27 photos of Centralia. No demonic pictures there.

  • I've been there. Spooky. I sometimes wonder if this is the gateway to hell.

  • Yeah I've been here too...worth a visit.

  • fozzibab that entirely your opinion, i for one do believe in hell and demons and heaven and angels. and trust me i've seen worse things then having the ground open up under you.

  • Demon's arn't real, hell isn't real, the only creapiness anyone should be feeling towards this is the fact that 400 acre fire is burning UNDERGROUND, and the Earth could open up beneath you and swallow you whole in an instant. Now THAT'S creepy.

  • Demons are real AND Hell is real if you believe there is, dont tell everyone that unless you're sure there isnt. So when you die give us a sign back on earth if its real or not.

  • Considering it's been almost a year since I made the above post, and I don't really care, but suffice it to say if a person is stupid/scared/ignorant enough to believe in hell and the devil and fairies and unicorns, then, well, I really don't give a damn as to what their opinion is :/ One of the great things of about internet annonymity is that I can be as much of a fucking asshole as I want and I recieve NO backlash from my horrendous and devastatingly logical statements!

  • lol

  • the devil isn't on the same league as fairies though, more like the Universal Censor league IMO. In any case, that town sort of creeps me out. I mean, an ever spreading fire underground....it's like the lake of fire, literally.

  • what I'm talking about is none of your concern.

  • Can you post thoughs pictures on a site i would love to see em

  • you know, they say every still frame shot ever taken after the coal fire hadf a demonic entity in it , i thought it was crap until i had seen actual fresh pics from a friends camera , its creapy

  • I have been to the town Centralia. It is definatly a site to see. It was definatly worth the 2 hour drive (for me atleast). The drive wasn't too bad either.
