I don't quite get the T part. Since I'm not really into golf, I'm not sure whether that was supposed to be an in-joke, or the golfer was just yelling "The next letter is T, you idiot!" at Don.
That part I assumed. I even recall a joke like that in one of the "Clue" books I used to have. When Mr. Green found he was wrong about Mr. Boddy being on the golf course, he said "well that really TEES me off!" I just don't get what it means.
@Garrettk41: A golf "tee" (so-called because it's shaped like the letter, sort of) is the little wooden object that the ball goes on at the start of playing each hole. So yes, the heavy-handed reference to the "17th TEE!!" was a pun, just like the other hints (gee/eye/why).
I wonder how many prop pianos they went through making these snipits... I would LOVE to see a blooper where Don's head goes right through the keyboard or something.
geez, i didn't realize Sesame Street & Bugs Bunny were so controversial until recent years... I grew up to both of them & didn't bang my head on pianos or do silly things like that. Parents are either too paranoid, &/or not watching their kids properly. Media can't always be an easy scapegoat.
Well, you're dfinitely right on the first four counts. As for Michael, it's possible, though there have been other guesses. On Muppet Wiki, there's a discussion about Chet having possibly been voiced by Bob Payne or John Lovelady. Still, you might be right. And we have no way of knowing who does the doctor. Maybe if she'd had a line...
I started my long route to becoming a professional pianist after watching Don Music as a kid. My mom says I used to get pissy and bang my head on the piano too.
This i believe is one of the last Don Music episodes since he's banging his hands on the piano during this. Parents must've already written in by this time!
No, I believe he was banging his HEAD on the piano. In every sketch (or almost every sketch) involving him..everytime he made a mistake he'd get frustrated and bang his head on the piano.
I'm glad Don Music did not rewrite the Alphabet Song. At least it was nice to see him get help from the words he couldn't find especially from Kermit and surroundings from other muppets.
I once saw my cousin (when he was only a kid of about three) roll his head on our piano. I didn't know at first what he was doing -- until his father laughed and said that he was imitating Don Music. It didn't occur to me that lots of other kids did the same thing -- but apparently my cousin's case was not unique.
For those who may not know, the picture in the background is of Joe Raposo, who wrote and sang many of the songs from Sesame Street, including the theme song. Some of his other songs are "C is for Cookie," "It's Not Easy Being Green," and "Sing, Sing A Song."
I didnt know that... I was only looking up all the Muppets that were taken off by parent groups for being "offensive" and found this little treasure. Excellent song writer and man do I miss this guy. Thanks for the info, bobchilds :-)
the vaudeville guys who come in at 2:35...brilliant! lol... and kermit's faces whenever he would do frog on the street interviews...sigh... WE MISS YOU JIM HENSON!!! xo
we had a piano...and although it wasn't often, once in a while, my darling parents would let me shout, "Oh, I'll never get this song...never, Never, NEVER..." and pound my head down on the keys... my wonderful parents...both educators. :)
This guy used to really creep me out when I was little. I used to cringe each time he banged his head on the piano, thinking how much that would hurt.
I think it's fitting that Mr. Johnson appears in this because one thing he and Don Music have in common is being frequent victims of frustration, though for different reasons. I think it would be cool if we saw them together more often. Lord Chatterly too. The three of them could share their frustrations with each other. And it would also be neat if they did their own Muppet/Kid moments, asking kids what makes them frustrated and telling them about their frustrations.
Like many who have posted here I, too, used to dread (as a child) all those incidents where Don Music banged his head against the piano keyboard. Then one day, my dad happened to watch one such episode along with my sister and myself -- and laughed like crazy. I then realized just how funny it really was -- and ever since, have looked back upon such incidents with amusement (sometimes even laughing at the memory).
Same here. Kermit interviewing Don Music was the best scenes he did for Sesame Street News. Don Music was a perfectionist like every great musician. He was just so funny when he messed up.
you know if parents took the time to explain things like Because the Muppet does it does not mean you should TV would be WAY better.. people complain so much I swear they don't want to raise their kids I mean WHY HAVE THEM
Actually, I remember being a kid and banging my head on the piano because of this. Calm down, I was only pretending, I'd always use my forearms to protect my head. My mom would get so mad, not because I'd hurt myself, but because, and I quote: "YOU'RE MAKING THE PIANO GO OUT OF TUNE!" (she yelled that, you see.)
Nobody has ever verified that for certain; it's commonly believed in the Muppet fan community that the reason he was dropped has more to do with the fact that his performer, Richard Hunt, died. (This has even been stated by a CTW representative who said they never even got any complaints about Don Music.) Imagine, an urban legend right here on Sesame Street! (Not that Bert and Ernie don't have their fair share...)
Bullseye! And this is what I believed for years. The kids hurting themselves by banging their heads on pianos, walls, etc. is most likely nonsense. It's simple. Richard Hunt died. They couldn't find a suitable vocal replacement for Don Music. The baker films were not pulled because they terrified kids. They were pulled because they were dated by the 80s. I wish Sesame Workshop would tell the true stories instead of the nonsense that they put into fluff books like Sesame Unpaved.
Sesame Street actually joked about that in one 90s street scene: Elmo referred to "his" alphabet song because he thought the letters in the middle were "H-I-J-K, Elmo, P".
Heh heh. There are a few folks on here posting how they, too, would bang their heads on the piano like him. This is why Don Music was fired from the show because parents would call in complaining their kids would imitate him. Haha. Me, personally, I was simply terrified of him. The crazy hair and wild eyes, the banging on the piano. Now being 22 years old, I watch it now and laugh my ass off. He is without a doubt my favorite sesame street character!
So kids really were copying him, huh? That just amazes me. Don Music's head-banging was the LAST thing I would have imitated as a kid. Every time he did it, I would cringe, because it looked really painful! I mean, slamming your head into those hard little keys---and I always imagined that your forehead would slam into their sharp corners. Now that would hurt.
This is the only time I remember Don Music writing the familiar song rather than totally rearranging it. I wonder why Fat Blue wasn't there singing the song at the end with everyone else.
Richard Hunt was an awesome voice artist. Does anyone have any clips of the short-lived series "Little Muppet Monsters"? I ask because his character, Tug Monster, is among the referenced characters on Hunt's special tribute website, and I'm curious to know what he was like.
As a kid, I had a tape with the one that went: "Mary had a bicycle. It was painted red as fire. And whenever Mary wanted a ride, the bicycle had a flat tire." I still chuckle, and now it's my nephew's favorite tape.
I'd like to hear the one where he re-writes the Sesame Street Theme... it goes some thing like..."Stormy night, not even a star in sight...On my way to where the sky is dark...Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Yellow Stone Park!!!"
If Don Music had parodied The Electric Company, it would've sounded like this... "We're gonna turn it off. We're gonna bring you no power. We're gonna unlock the dam, cause a raging flood, though the courtesy...of The Water Works, The Water Works, The Water Works!"
What about...Whistle Whistle little bird Isn't eating crumbs absurd? Would you like a ham on rye, Or a peice of cherry pie? But if those crumbs are all you want, Don't come in my restaurant!!!!
When I was a child I used to bang my head on the piano like Don^^ my parents didn't know why it made me laugh though, coz they're french and didn't watch sesame street with my brother and I, we watched it with english friends.
i still remember watching sesame street faithfully every single day. This was before I was even in kindergarten - at least 35 years ago! Sesame street will always bring me back to those days EVERY single time I watch any classic clip
I can't get enough of these classic Sesame Street clips! The way they sing the "Alphabet Song" at the end of the clip is the way I would sing it at school (just to be different). I love the Frank Oz muppet who comes in and gives the subtle "T" hint. Fun-NEE!
t's a real pleasure for me to watch the original versions of the sesame street, expecially Don Music. The german synchonisation was done with the very shitty voice of Peter Kirchberger.
Thank you very, very much for posting that perfect example of really perfect child entertainment.

Yeah, I have to admit, I did bang my face on the piano and say "never, never!" but it was a surprisingly helpful stress reliever during piano practice!!
cool, if get a chance check out morphing music, it's classical music, but played on the streets with players morphing in to each other...it's intresting..
Those word/letter puns were a clever way to keep the skit funny, considering that Don can't solve his creative problem by substituting new lyrics: the alphabet IS the alphabet, and only the "Now I know" part of the traditional song contains more than letter-names. Five stars!
Oooops, I forgot that I'd commented before. Sorry! (On a newer note, though: If this skit had aired on the Muppet Show instead of Sesame Street, I could easily imagine more characters interrupting with some heavy-handed clues for other letters.... ;-)
I never banged my head on anything at all. I always figured that was negative. Whenever Don Music stopped abruptly, getting stuck, I'm at home shouting encouragements at Don: "Come on, Don. You can do it! Think of something!", "Don't give up!", etc.
In any event, anybody got any of Don Music's other skits memorable?
Every time Don yelled out his "Never" phrase, the first few times, he didn't bang his head on the piano. First time was his hands, second time, partially his head and hands. Third time, his upper back; he threw his head backwards. Fourth time, face first, like he ordinarily does.
Oh this segment is certainly from the 1980s! That's when I was watching it as a kid!!! :-) Don Music was awesome- and yeah, I'll admit I copied his head-banging routine as a kid- but even as a kid I knew enough not to actually slam my head into the keys! It was just pretend!!!
clemdane: They showed 70's and 80's clips together in the 80's, just as they showed all three generations--70's, 80's, and 90's--in the 90's BEFORE Elmo took control.
In this segment there is a picture of Joe Raposo which was seen in the video from the 80s "Count it Higher:Great Music Videos from Sesame Street" which implies to me that this segment is from the 80s.
I love when Don Music bangs his head on the piano, i wish he was still on the show, it is ashame that kids imitated him when he banged his head on the piano because he was a funny muppet. :D
It's been officially found out that Chet is Bob Payne.

I don't quite get the T part. Since I'm not really into golf, I'm not sure whether that was supposed to be an in-joke, or the golfer was just yelling "The next letter is T, you idiot!" at Don.
Garrettk41 2 years ago
I think it was probably a golf joke, considering the other references were jokes as well (I seem to have something in my "eye" and tell me "why").

That part I assumed. I even recall a joke like that in one of the "Clue" books I used to have. When Mr. Green found he was wrong about Mr. Boddy being on the golf course, he said "well that really TEES me off!" I just don't get what it means.

I guess tee involves that little stick you put the ball on. I'm more of a miniautre golf person, so that's my theory.
wattamack4 2 years ago 2
@Garrettk41: A golf "tee" (so-called because it's shaped like the letter, sort of) is the little wooden object that the ball goes on at the start of playing each hole. So yes, the heavy-handed reference to the "17th TEE!!" was a pun, just like the other hints (gee/eye/why).

I'd like to hear the one where he re-writes the Sesame Street Theme... it goes some thing like..."Stormy night, not even a star in sight...On my way to where the sky is dark...Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Yellow Stone Park!!!"
1977JAGuar 5 years ago

Good Groovy Memories Of Sesame Streets early days!

i still remember watching sesame street faithfully every single day.

Groovy clip - thanks for posting. I believe that Don Music was based on Marvin Hamlich - famous pianist.

Don Music's approach to creativity is exactly how I approach my PhD work- all he needs is twenty cigarettes.

thanks for posting, 'Now I know' who I learned to throw tantrums from.
Don Music pitches a great fit.

Yeah, I have to admit, I did bang my face on the piano and say "never, never!" but it was a surprisingly helpful stress reliever during piano practice!!

Those word/letter puns were a clever way to keep the skit funny, considering that Don can't solve his creative problem by substituting new lyrics: the alphabet IS the alphabet, and only the "Now I know" part of the traditional song contains more than letter-names. Five stars!
ISNorden 5 years ago
Oooops, I forgot that I'd commented before. Sorry! (On a newer note, though: If this skit had aired on the Muppet Show instead of Sesame Street, I could easily imagine more characters interrupting with some heavy-handed clues for other letters.... ;-)

Kermit - Jim
Don - Richard
Fat Blue - Jerry
Golfer - Frank
Don't forget that these guys were doing the puppets at the same time as the voices.

I remeber this. And I also remeber what the skit is that starts afterward too. I would like to see all of that one too. Thanks again.

gotta love the jazzed-up alphabet song!

The golfer that suggested sharply "T", definitely Frank Oz's voice talent.
tpirman1982 5 years ago
Yeah, on the 16th.... "T"!!!!!!
tpirman1982 5 years ago
I never banged my head on anything at all. I always figured that was negative. Whenever Don Music stopped abruptly, getting stuck, I'm at home shouting encouragements at Don: "Come on, Don. You can do it! Think of something!", "Don't give up!", etc.
In any event, anybody got any of Don Music's other skits memorable?
tpirman1982 5 years ago
Every time Don yelled out his "Never" phrase, the first few times, he didn't bang his head on the piano. First time was his hands, second time, partially his head and hands. Third time, his upper back; he threw his head backwards. Fourth time, face first, like he ordinarily does.
tpirman1982 5 years ago
I agree. I think Don Music needs anger management therapy.
tpirman1982 5 years ago
Atypical for Don Music; then again, that's part
of the fun for Sesame Street veterans. (On a show
meant to teach kids about letters and numbers, Don
couldn't very well change the lyrics to the Alphabet
Song...so he has to be spoon-fed very obvious,
punny H-I-N-T-S.)

MacLeaper 5 years ago
This is not from the 80s. I watched it in the first half of the 1970s. I was 11 in 1980 and certainly wasn't watching Sesame Street anymore.
clemdane 4 years ago
clemdane: They showed 70's and 80's clips together in the 80's, just as they showed all three generations--70's, 80's, and 90's--in the 90's BEFORE Elmo took control.
TherealRNO 4 years ago
In this segment there is a picture of Joe Raposo which was seen in the video from the 80s "Count it Higher:Great Music Videos from Sesame Street" which implies to me that this segment is from the 80s.

Man, you can't show kids ANYTHING these days. :/
Is that Billy Joel on the wall?? LOL
sodapop81 5 years ago
No, it's the late great Joe Raposo.
sawing14s 5 years ago
Don Music always had a picture of the late Joe Raposo on the wall in every one of his skits.
tpirman1982 5 years ago
I love when Don Music bangs his head on the piano, i wish he was still on the show, it is ashame that kids imitated him when he banged his head on the piano because he was a funny muppet. :D

This classic was censored ages ago. (See how DM copes with stress!)
whizkidforte 5 years ago
It doesn't look censored to me ...
sawing14s 5 years ago
Censored as in Sesame Street quit playing it and the other Don Music skits because they were controversial.

Anni: The Sesame Street DIED when Elmo seized control, IMO. Now, Stepford Street is in its place.
