Sampras is pretty arrogant. "14 is a lot in the 90s." He likes to have the mindset that his era was much better and that Federer got off the hook. Even though he agrees that Fed is the greatest ever, he seems kind of bitter about it sometimes.
Roger hasn't done it all. He's yet to win the career golden slam which only Nadal & Agassi have done. If he wins the gold at London 2012 he will then have done it all.
@643eddie Depends how you look at it. At this point an olympic gold is important for Roger (he certainly thinks so), but at the same time you can say it doesn't matter that much. It can be said Grand Slams are still more important tournaments for him in the big picture - I think more Grand Slams would be better for his career than anything else. In fact, Roger actually has an olympic gold, even if it is not in singles... He has done it all.
@643eddie The Olympics is more about representing your country rather than playing for personal achievement. In that sense, he HAS stood on the podium as an Olympic gold medalist, except that Wawrinka was standing next to him. I'm sure he doesn't feel inferior having won "only" a doubles gold medal in that sense, considering the feeling of the Olympic gold is the same either way.
It takes some real character to show up when your record is about to be broken, and even more character to admit that the man who broke it is a greater player than you.
Love Rog and Pete, legends and credits to the game.
this was a painful match to watch..I don't watch the highlights at all because I really wanted Roddick to win. Nothing against Fed of course, but I'd really like to see other people besides Fed and Nadal winning slams all the time.
LOL! 0:15 LOL Boris is all like WTF is this clown doing here when Rusedski begins to speak. Greg's just happy to be there. He's all like I'm not worth I'm not worthy!
Don't be so quick my friend. Roddick was signed off as a mediocre player at best. But because of the way he played that day, he was redeemed in the eyes of many.
@gunghojoeno it's a shame because he played an excellent match, probably better than Federer, but he lost it. But Federer's a champion, he found a way to win.
For the greatest player ever and the most talented on the planet Roger is very modest, so if Rafa btb. Sometimes when he loses a match he can be a little critical of himself, instead of giving all credit to his opponent, because he is an extreme perfectionist but he is magnanimous in defeat and in victory.
Talent means nothing without hard work, Federer worked hard.
Look Safin didn't even want to become a pro, and didn't care about tennis and didn't even try in his career - yet he won 2 slams which makes me believe he could have gone down as a legend.
Yeah why is greg rusedski their, he's not qualified enough!
the first thing Safin says is that the image of a guy who doesn't work about him is completely fake and that he worked a lot ! Really a lot ...
He was talented of course, but how can yu say he is as talented as the mighty federer ?
The guy is just from another planet. No one has ever came cloth to his potentiel. Maybe Murray, but he is not consistant enouigh. Federer can play his best shot at the best moment. Wimbledon final 2008! On match point he hits his first bh winner OF THE MATCH man.
So you're comparing Murray's talent to Federer's but lambasting Safin's talent. Doesn't make sense as Safin is far more talented than Murray and as talented as Federer (And possibly Nalbandian).
And Federer was born in switzerland, on the planet earth.
"And Federer was born in switzerland, on the planet earth."
Do you really need to say those stupid things ? you're embarassing yourself you know that I hope ? It's useless to us irony against a exageration.
Anyways, Safin was taleneted but Murray is more talented, watch "murray just a pusher video" and you'll see ... the guy is amazing. He just can't play his best tennis at the most important moments YET. And god knows I don't like the guy quite a bit.
Fed = talented as well as physically and mentally strong. Safin said it himself, some great champions are great because they are talented, some because they are mentally tough, and some because they are phenomenal athletes. Safin said Fed is all of these. Safin = Talented, athletically mediocre, super shitty mentally. Nalbandian = talented, mentally mediocre, super shitty athletically. Haas = mediocre talent, mediocre physicality, and mediocre mentally.
I love Fed but somebody needs to rethink his marketing decisions. Shoving a big gold "15" stitched on a cream colored herringbone cardigan in the face of a good man who left it all on the court (and one you say you respect a great deal) is a pretty strange way to live up to that "down to earth, all around nice guy" reputation Sampras likes to gush about.
You can't compare Roger on and off the court though. On court, he is probably one of the most stubborn players out there and wants to do everything to be mentally better than you. And don't say that stubborn sports players are assholes, because then you would be saying Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Pete Sampras, Rafael Nadal, Michael Phelps, etc are all asses because the truth is they are stubborn because being stubborn creates the BIGGEST champions.
If this video is about Federer I just don't understand why people has to mention Nadal here. Again and again. How tiring!!
Both are amazing players and it's stupid to like one and hate the other,, why is that?? if you really like tennis you should like both of them. Some people really act like little children. I didn't think tennis fans would be so unsportive...
Loved this interview and the respect from Pete, Borg, and Rod. Roger is so down to earth and he explains clearly what his thought process is...he's got the whole package in my book.
alot of people say that but he really doesnt have anything to prove on that point. Yes nadal has a winning record against him but 80% of the victories came on clay and is considered to be the greatest clay court player of all time...and he is also 5 years the younger of federer which in tennis terms is like 15 years apart, he is not in his same era, (nadal, djokovic, murray) is one era, and federer's era consists of (safin, hewitt, roddick, nalbandian)
Hey man, Im a fan of Federer too, but Im sick of all the excuses....Feds supposed to be the best grass-court player ever...but Nadal beat him, where as Fed gets absolutely humiliated at the French open at the hands of Nadal. Really looking forward to seeing what happens at the US Open.
i will mention it again, it doesnt matter how many times nadal has beaten him...if nadal was 30-0 against federer and federer had these records and nadal had his , federer would still be considered the greatest of all time....winning record against the entire field rather than one person is much more important...and federer has humilitated nadal more than once, giving him a bagel at wimbledon AND on clay his surface
Right! It's just one of those 1-to-1 contrasting match-ups which makes it incredibly challenging in sports. Ali-Frazier, Yankees-Boston, Borg-McEnroe/Connors, Sampras-Agassi. Don't forget Rafa's game now has it's additional competiton with players like Soderling to whom high topspin to his backhand mean absolutely nothing! We will see!
and it is very interesting how you make the poing out about soderling too because people also like to make the excuse that federer is so dominant because he has no competition where i think ppl are blind in that it is nadal who is not as dominant in his era which no one cares to mention, in that murray and djokovic have beating him in the past and these are supposed to be the domination years for me, i believe the downfall for nadal has started . i hope not cuz im looking forward to more battles
if federer breaks the head to head against nadal now and wins for example 10 straight matches against him...my bet would be that ppl will jump on the fact and say nadal was injured....hope that's not the case
There are those out there who would try to diminish Federer's achievements by saying that "Nadal wasn't there" or "Nadal was injured" and that's fine based on their head-to-head's of late. However Fed's consistent domination (except Murray) indicates his obvious greatness. And last year's Wimbledon could have gone either way. Anyway...it's only been a year.
your absolutely right, even with murray i dont care how bad his record is against him.....im sick and tired of murray being a favorite at grand slams nowadays. martina navratolova once said you cannot be a favorite at a major until you win one which is 100% accurate. just because nadal was out of wimbledon espn was hyping the shit out of murray for the entire tournament which i dont understand
Well...I can understand the projection of Murray being a heavy favorite in that he's beaten Fed, Nadal and Djoko of late and that he's a hell of a player. But alas, in light of Roddick playing the toury of his life...Murray has yet to prove he's Grand Slam worthy. Navratilova was right!
I know right! How in the hell could anyone not consifder roger the fav?5 in a row and on a 2 slam winning streak playing great.....its just ludacris....what does he have now 23 stright semis in slams.Too me,that is more amazing than the 15 slams he's won
His only real rival IS Laver... a man who STILL won something like 8 slams (with his 5 best years playing "pro") missing a total of 20 possible slams...
I think Fed is the best ever... but when he reaches 20 slams... I'll be sure of it! lol
... Saying him missing all those years is speculation though. It is as big of a speculation as saying maybe Nadal would have defeated Federer if he made the French Open this year again or whatever. The fact is, if you are going to compare it, in Laver's time, 3 of the Grand Slams were on grass while Roland Garros was clay. And also, the biggest names DID NOT go to the Australian Open back then, which is why Borg/McEnroe/etc did not win it. There are many other reasons as well.
My earlier comment was flawed in that Laver actually won 11 slams whilst missing his best 5 years.
At the end of the day, it is a different sport now no doubt, Laver would not stand a chance against such tough opposition as today, that I can say.
But we can look at winning percentages etc, which Laver is still on top. I do love Federer's game though, and wont hold against him the fact that Laver ALSO player doubles at most tournaments he played... lol
and nadal's suppose to be the geratest clay courter of all time, and fed beat him, with a 6-0 at one point too... whats your point? you sure dont sound like a fed fan to me, at least not a reasonable one
You're right and also every great player has his "achilles heel" so to speak. Rafa's unique game is the antithesis of Fed's..it's ridiculous. I guess the Lord always places some surmmountable obstacle in the way to make one better! Federer has done that and has nothing to prove with Rafa.
I don't think that's right for knowledgable tennis folk. As with Sampras, the emphasis has to be shorter points and bigger serving because Rafa is only 22 and has younger legs...however now we're also seeing the consequences of having such a game as his. Fed has nothing to prove there.
thanks for the backup comments xman4un...not hating on nadal just wanted to make the point out that consistancy over the entire field rather than one person is more important....federer was clearly his best durnig the prime of his era which was all the way deep into 2005 with hewitt, roddick, and safin all in the top 10 at that point, and with the downfall of them all federer stayed consistant throughout the next couple years and showed how great of a champion he really is
@EscapedC0nvict Then who do they use? Not all tennis greats want to do commentary. Plus, many of them work for other stations like John McEnroe with NBC and so on. Greg is actually one of the more successful commentators. Everyone loves Goodall/Koenig yet they were never nearly as successful as Rusedski. Success doesn't mean you should be a commentator neither does it make you a better commentator.
3:24 Next, he needs to win 4 in a row; a true grand slam. I hope he wins US Open and Australian. Too bad he didn't win 2009 Australian, then he would only have to win the US Open to make a career GS.
LOL WTF Boris Becker is doing after he shakes Roger's hand right @ 0:36 !!! I ADORE YOU KING ROG <3<3<3 You're MY HERO & MY G.O.A.T <3<3<3

EscapedC0nvict 2 years ago
Our Greg? A failure? Hmmm, yes, you're probably right.

are you being sarcastic???
if you are then just face facts, he doesn't have a slam and he only got to 1 final - facts and firures don't lie

Yes, I was being sarcastic....

4:58, John McEnroe should have been included in that pic..
Federer has a great English vocabulary and can speak 4 languages fluently. He is so intelligent.
4:19 I'm surprised she didn't have her baby after that 5th set. I literally got sick from it and had the runs and stomach knots. lol

it's pretty obvious that John McEnroe parties way more than Borg. He looks a lot older than Borg

3:24 Next, he needs to win 4 in a row; a true grand slam. I hope he wins US Open and Australian. Too bad he didn't win 2009 Australian, then he would only have to win the US Open to make a career GS.

not a career GS, but THE GS.
