This is why it is so important for parents & kids who are straight to wake up & see Life as it truly is. Being gay is part of LIFE's character, it's seldom just a choice & it can exist in any family. Thousands of people take their own lives each year because they have no one to turn to and are unable to cope with all the condemnation that exists. Many are kids afraid to even ask for help from their school mates. This film represents the many kids who risk their lives going off with a stranger.
OH PUHLEASE! A collection of stereotypes. Posh British schools don't hire gay teachers. And posh British schools don't have lawns for school bullies to kick someone half to death. Connor Clemens, YOU SUCK. In more ways than one it seems.
@Maloy7800 since when was this a posh British school :S for starters its not even supposed to be British its irish and it wasn't private school you fucking retard, oh and the teacher wasn't gay either
@AlexanderJayxo An ANGRY Brit. :-)) Just like all Brits, thinking that the world has nothing else to do but study his poor little rock in the middle of nowhere.
@Maloy7800 lmfao an extremely rich and powerful rock in the middle of nowhere... and you call Britain a prison coming from the Russian :S Britain is liberal you can do what you want. Also I don't think people have nothing better to do than study Britain... :S you were talking about Britain like you knew about it. My the Russian education system is worse than I thought
@Maloy7800 if you don't care what the United Kingdom is like why you posting comments like you knew about it then... This film is Irish not British anyway. wow you're fucking retarded
This is total, complete and full BULLSHIT! People who drive Mercs don't yell at each other and don't say "I never wanted kids!" BS, total BS! The whole story is sucked out of finger for some gay festival prize.
@Maloy7800 LMFAO... No wonder you think people who drive Mercedes cars are the picture of respectability... you're russian a poor country. In the UK you see a Mercedes so often they're boring. You're clueless...
Let's fantasize: The boy will capture the lifeline of a son of one of the elderly gay's neighbours, by coindicence... as always ... just invision the possible... could be a real lifeline... or in the figurative sense...could become James II... ;-)
It's rather unlikely that a boy of that age would turn to a mature elderly gay and go on a "car trip" of that kind only because he's lacking a father figure and his (gay) teacher too worried to support him because he himself was bullied at this school in earlier days for the same. The more probable outcome would be as always: He'll have some more boring years in the province until he's lucky to find an appropriate soul mate in a bigger city... no big deal with his sweet sticky-out ears :-)
i hope a lot of teachers watch this film. He is about to go down a path that could hve been avoided had the teacher gotten over his homophobia and listen to the kid.
So... is the teacher secretly anti-gay and thought maybe the kid was just "confused" and could be "turned straight" through those helplines, churches, etc.?? But was a 'softer' homophobe than usual
im thinkin tha teacher himslf is poss gay? as a reacher tho he offered to.listen and alternatives but he had to remov himslf as a friendly figure due to facr it blurs tha lines and cud confuse tha lad furthr..
@WingedGreenBeen why do you even bother to post insulting crap like that. What is the point in it like what do you get out of writing stuff like that. But seriously why bother
The author 'cops out' on this short. He leaves to many loose ends. The reader or viewer wants some sort of fnality. The ends with him and a old man driving off but it's left to us to finish the story; something the author should have done - for better or worse.
I felt like there could be 2 reasons why his teacher rejected to help him. 1: He's gay himself, or 2. He talked about someone who had a hard time being out, and he was responsible for this dilemma (maybe because he gave a bad advice or something, or not helping the kid enough. Maybe the kid even killed him/herself? who knows) ...
@skyblazer7 James was played by Niall Wright who has received much acclaim for this & other roles. BTW When this film was made Niall was the exact age as James (forget but either 14 or 15). Vin
For me, the ending is deliberately uncomfortable specifically to make a point: without support from family, friends, teachers and the education system, look where vulnerable young kids end up. The underplayed ending leaves room to hope that the kid at least gets to confide in someone if nothing else. That said, most of us will still be appalled at the risk he takes and the hideous consequences of a mistake like that. For such a simple film it is incredibly powerful.
@HojooFlimpson and let's face it - chances are, James was never seen or heard from again... It happens everyday - This film makes me furious, simply because in a lot of ways I was that boy - needing someone to listen or to understand me but never finding it at home or with "friends" led me directly into the cars and beds of strangers and I was younger than he is. I hope my kids never end up needing to go to strangers just to feel accepted and understood.
@requinrouge HI I think you provide the ultimate comment on this little video. My experience was very different to yours and 'James' but this video really shows how important it is to encourage young gay kids to talk to trustworthy adults.
Like you say, hope that, in the future, ANY kid will feel accepted by their parents, teachers and society.
@requinrouge Thanks 4 sharing ur own experience. But say getting into beds and cars at such a young age , did u never find any older guy who would give u caring, understanding and advise? Who would really fall in love with u ? Cause that would have made a difference wouldn't it?
Why does this film have to equate being gay with being a pedophile/ephebophile? The young man is 14 or 15 and feels he has to connect with a 60 yr old man at a public toilet? None of it rings true at all and it's quite insulting.
@2Majesties He said he was in Sixth Form..In England/Ireland sixth form is the ages 16-18. Also, in England the sex age limit is 16. So it isn't paedophilia. Hope I helped.
@AllThingsGay3 The kid looks 10-13 and even if he was of legal age, the depiction of a young boy with some man old enough to be his grandfather is repulsive. This serves nothing but to perpetuate stereotypes of levels abnormalities in same sex orientations and relations. Old men like the character here should be castrated for preying on emotional vulnerabilities of young gay boys who struggle in their personal lives and look for love and attention.
@2Majesties His father never wanted him - his teacher failed him - he had no friends - he wanted someone to listen & tell him he was ok - you might cringe that it was an older guy & where they met (we did too a bit) - but it happens
@2Majesties Maybe from YOUR personal experience but what I've seen in this movie is not at all far fetched to me. When I was young my first experiences were with someone in their 30's, perhaps not a senior citizen but it's the same basic idea. I never felt comfortable around kids my own age, they were the one's who bullied me.. The boy has got to talk to SOMEONE!
I know this is fiction, but yet, reality sometimes is worse than fiction. Teachers should be trained to handle this kind of situations.
