if you could go back to the 20's-30's-40's-50's who would you meet?
i would meet william randolph hearst, ya' know before the the affair thing... it'd also be cool to live at his place, especially while the zoo was still there.
To those who want to go back in time and live in the 40s and 50s remember that medicine was not what it is now. Most cancers were a death sentence, for example. Life expectancy was lower than now as well. I understand the nostalgia but I kinda like current technology, too.
@OaktownABQ Astute observation; I think it WAS the Brady Bunch kitchen, only with the "island" moved over toward the oven (or a different island altogether behind Danny). I also think the set they used for The Brady Bunch was older than the show itself...I remember seeing the living room portion of it on an episode of "Mission: Impossible."
America at it's peak! It was all B&W tv, tranistor radios & 8mm movie projectors, but it was GREAT, we manufactured them all! Today we have many more nifty toys but it all comes from china, taiwan, japan & mexico. Sad, it's all gone for good!
Commercials back then actually were kind of entertaining unlike the mind-less crap of today. Plus there was some actual meaning to the commercials, today the ad tells you nothing about the product and is just mind-less.
Dutch Calvinist Puritans doing a "Keep on smilin" jig-really is too much. Advertisers back then could get away with anything. I've watched about 20 old TV commercials today and I recognize about half of them. There was a pre-occupation with bbq'ing hamburgers and also. animated commercials would often use or re-use the simulation of a spinning Bass Viol because it was hip, groovy and cool.
Frankly, other than a deep sense of nostalgia evoked by watching, I cannot help but be disturbed
Third guy from the left in that Dutch Masters ad is Bob McGrath ("Bob" from Sesame Street; also father of Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray). The ad aired during the old "Sing Along With Mitch" show when Bob was a member of the chorus. The other guys in the ad are also members of Mitch Miller's chorus.
How about the old Maxwell House ads where the man says, "My wife...I think I'll keep her!".Or the other where he says. "Be a good little Maxwell House wife."
I say this so much that even my kids believe things were better then and you know what, they were. My parents never worried about me being outside or riding my bike far and wide. In the summers we would disappear early in the morning, return around noon for food and leave until it was getting dark outside. All that time we spent playing, imagination required. Yes, that is what bothers me most, those young don't understand and when we are gone, these films may be all that is left.
Prontito means: "we'll overrun your sovereign shores with hoards of our criminals, thugs and punks who don't contribute to society at all, and we'll bring gang activity to your once peaceful town, and destroy your economy; and we'll have babies with all your white girls and well send all of our money back to our country and the only places we'll shop is in our own stores and the money still goes back to our country. Oh, and by the way... we'll own your country one day." Buenos dias.
I now remember "The Little Old Bake Shop Way" line for Hostess. I didn't even fall for it then - it was more like, "The Little Old Factory Way" that their products were (and are) made.
That's right, 'NewGremlin'- that ad was seen on most episodes of "THE FLINTSTONES" (when Miles Laboratories, the makers of "Alka-Seltzer back then, was the alternate sponsor) in early 1962...the "Chesterfield King" ad was seen on "THE TWILIGHT ZONE" (when Liggett & Myers was their primary sponsor) in the 1961-'62 season. General Foods sponsored "THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW" on CBS from 1957-'64 (on behalf of "Post" cereals and Maxwell House), and he continued to pitch for them for several years after.
I wonder if the Hostess advertisement at 5:01 was a reference to Adam and Eve. The couple swings around a tree. The woman gives the man an apple that he eats.

The kitchen in the Danny Thomas coffee ad looked like the kitchen on the Brady Bunch.

History is what it is. Cigarette ads on TV were legal until 1971, and chewing, pipe and cigar tobacco ads were actually legal into the 1980's.

Like it or not, they are a part of history. Smoking ads on TV were legal until 1971.
