It's awe inspiring to watch one man on an empty stage captivate the audience the way he does. I don't believe that there are many other individuals around now a days that have that power. While I love seeing the Goats play as a band, some of the best performances are just John on and empty stage, pouring his soul out for all of us to see and asking nothing in return.
Packed full of emotion. holy crap.. I dont even know if I like the Mountain Goats... I love Colin Meloy, Gibbard, and a bunch of other artists.. I dunno if its really my style... seems like lots of emotion just for show.. anyone have some insight? thanks!
Some of the stuff he does is his way of showing emotion while maintaining the original musical ideas. He can mean it like you don't believe, but he wrote the song to be in a whisper, with quiet guitar, so he has to do something. He can't just scream and strum harder every time he remembers why he wrote a line, and all that emotion floods back at once.
That was so weird when he started Baboon in the style of Get Lonely. I thought he was going to sing the whole thing like that, which would be weird, because it's such an angry song. But then he kicked back into it with the intensity with which he usually sings it.
@adharmabum421 I've been watching to try and figure out, and most of the song is an open Am hammering on the C, he also uses a C, F, and E/Em depending on hammer I think. There's probably another one or two in there, but most of the song seems to be these unless I'm really not seeing things correctly. Hope this helps.
wow.. this is so good.. i mean baboon´s a great song anyway but the way it picks up here in the second verse is just amazing.. love john darnielle love the mountain goats..
I just realized that John's guitar technique has improved quite a bit in "get lonely" (as in he doesn't only play folk chords). You can see it at certain parts of monster's avenue

He's such a humble guy. "You have to be a serious egotist to believe that anyone's going to listen to your stuff let alone like it"

definitely one of the best performances of "baboon," one of the most striking and powerful mountain goats songs.
