Lines from this song were written in a subway. I never knew which song they came from. I always looked at the lines, and loved them, but one day they were gone, painted over. 20 years later I remembered a fragment of the lines "flowers washed down by the rain". I entered it into a search engine, and this came up. I have never heard such perfect sadness, beautiful in its purity.
i was a young man at the lyceum that night and it was very special,i managed to get a copy of that gig on tape and i still have it (Transmission thats if you can play it live...some idiot shouts out in-between every track on the tape) from A Certain Ratio,Section 25,Killing Joke (with flame thrower) & finally Joy Division it was fantastic.the one thing that sticks out in my mind is when Ian Curtis finished Atrocity exhibition he was helped off stage he was in a frenzy or fit.... i got worried
This song always reminds me of my ex (love of my life), he would always shoot heroin to this song as we layed in his bed with a candle burning , i would just lay next to him and watch him as he slept. I would stay awake for so long with this on repeat. :(
What to say more? It's my favourite song from Closer, after ''Twenty four hours''. Live performance, though seems as weaker(strange keyboard, isn't clear somehow, one line skipped) is better because of emotions and cold fire larger than in album...
This version almost has an industrial vibe going through it.

Their best live song ever. The most perfect and beautiful version of "The Eternal". This song is eternal.

Great to hear a live version of this! Why do people think this is Atmosphere? It's The Eternal off Closer. Best band ever, RIP Ian.

as dark and emotional as it gets without being in anyway pathetic, like so many other so-called new-wave or "gothic" bands tend to be. timeless.
