  • Cash's version shits all over this pop rock piece of crap.

  • hitting his bass and cussing at it haha great song though

  • Let's see..Kenny Kirkland playing two independent keyboard parts in a difficult time signature. Vinnie Colaiuta (perhaps the best live snare sound in history) and holding down a difficult signature seamlessly. Perfect harmonies. A horn section that's tasteful, in tune and dynamic. Sting playing a bass part in a very difficult time signature while singing a completely counterpucntual part without missing a beat. Yep....it's a mess alright.

  • I still think the johnny cash version is much better :)

  • I don't know who wrote the song, and don't give a shit if it's in 'bullshit' 9/8 or plain simple 4/4, but if you want to experience the true feeling in the song, better listerning to the Johnny Cash verson rather than this mess!

  • This is one of my favourite Sting tracks. A simple tragic, very American story, no wonder Johnny Cash decided to cover it. The time signature has been described as 9/8, but the effect is of alternating 5-beat and 4-beat bars. The main drumbeat is on the 3rd and 7th beat - quite a feat for the drummer. The Johnny Cash version is in straight 4/4 time.

  • @laconic94 Just to give you a heads-up: backbeat is on 3 and 8. ;) Pretty cool thing on Sting's video mainly musicians are commenting.

    Rock on!

  • Anyone think that the real Paul McCartney is sending these lyrics to him from beyond the grave? (that is if he is dead!?)

  • fucking amazing 9/8

  • Absolutely amazing version of the tune, can't stop listening!

  • Where is this concert from?

Was the whole show broadcast? Thx

  • Creo que el compas 9 / 8 mas organico que he oido nunca. Puto Genio!!!

la parte del final con lo s harmonicos me ha dejado KO! (diferente al disco).

  • fucking 9/8

  • @bougyman112 yope great track for drum improvisation ;)

  • One of our best singer/songwriters!

  • @CaradaysRedux he didn't write this!

  • @socrates1818 They didn't say that Sting wrote this. They simply stated that he is one of the best singer/ songwriters.

  • @socrates1818 I think he did write it. When I bought the album, he was listed as the composer for the song. Also, for what its worth, it says he wrote here at Wikipedia.

  • This ruined my day. When Johnny sings it just sounds so right. Sting? Well... he tried.

  • @THSTitan42 If he never tried, you wouldn't have the song. He wrote it.

  • includind the Ts

  • this is fail, cash is 124162t412t4476t476t761t26 times better

  • @Waggendaily

Sorry, Cash is a legendary musician and everything, but to me his version of the song comparing to the original one sounds dull and primitive, karaoke in a retirement home kind of thing. Sting's is elegant and intelligent, in some-country-but-not-redneck kind of way.

  • I PREFER THIS ORIGINAL VERSION MORE MUCH THAN JOHNNY CASH's COVER.....

STING ....YOU ARE SUCH LEGENDARY MUSICIAN !!!!!

  • Cashs version is wayyy better

  • @DynexGamers You're right. I think Sting's original version is too light to broach such a tragic topic whereas Johnny Cash knew how to create emotion and to give the song such intensity!

  • Awesome

  • talk about 9/8 meter.

  • johnny cash sings this sooooo much better sting just susks

  • @AngelofDeath199 Thats funny cause johnny cash liked stiungs song SO MUCH that he paid tribute to it by COVERING it.. Honestly, How dense can you possibly be *rolls eyes*

  • @KMatteKudasaiC I don't agree that Sting sucks either, but he didn't go, "Oh I like this a lot, I'll do a cover of this." He instead went to Rick Rubin, his producer, and said, "Give me something to do or I am going to die." When this was recorded, Cash was very sick and, respectfully, on his way out, as well as this being very recently after June Carter Cash had died. American IV was basically his way of preoccupying himself during the trying last months of his life.

  • Johnny Cash would be very proud of this rendition. Very nicely done.

  • @PaleHearse you are right

  • @PaleHearse

Sting wrote the song, Cash covered it...

  • @2LongGone

Well colour me stupid. When I saw the Cash version, I naturally assumed that it was an older tune given how the dark lyrics were true to Johnny Cash's form.

Thanks for enlightening me to that. Feeling pretty dumb now for not having a look at the origins of the song.

Sting's treatment of the many cover's he's done has always amazed me. I naturally assumed this was just one such amazing treatment.

    Thanks for the correction.

  • Vinnie

  • I think it's so cool when he hits the body of the bass along with the music accent!!

  • that beard... oh my gosh!

but anyway, Mr. Miller did a great job!

  • Tra i brani che amo totalmente di Sting. Tutti veramente bravi,

    grande Vincenzo !

  • semplicemente perfetti.... Grande Vinnie

  • Oh, haha.. I meant 96 ofc. It's even possible it was 97

  • know music is all about taste. But I think music just can't get any better than this.

I remember my first Sting concert as if it was yesterday, I was 8 years old and I sat on my dads shoulders watching Sting during his Mercury Falling tour of 91. I still have the ticket :)

Next week I'm attending 2 more shows. Can't wait so I'm watching and listening Sting like 24/7 for over a month now. Would just like to thank u ppl for posting all these amazing videos. Thanks a lot!

  • @bashissel Mercury Falling was a 1996 tour. I went to a show also. In 1991 Sting had just release Soul Cages, and toured briefly on that album.

  • @bashissel Your lucky you have a dad who cares about you, who loves you, who would be there for you. Me, all I have is a biological father that molests kids, whos a retarded bitch, but I also got the best father I could ask for, my stepdad is that best father for me, he gave me a roof over my head, he loves me, hes there for me, he cares for me, I could ask for none better than my stepdad.

  • @VideoManiacify It's good you have a nice stepdad. I had a nice one too. Peace.

  • Gorgeous guitar line. More tastefully done here than on CD. Go Dominic.

  • Difficult times to learn Memphis horns to play in 9/8 ;-) But they managed!

  • I forgot all about this song/groove. Vinnie is so original in odd times.

  • * VINNIE * !!!!

  • @camjilop noooooo way :P

  • I saw a lone rider crssong the plaine.......he has come to fetch me, to C what they've done.....and we'll ride together, 'till kingdom come. I pray for God's mercy.........for soon I'll be DEAD and I hung My Head.

  • This apparently eazy rythm construction is very hard to cover and when I see how Colaiuta plays it live Gosh!!!!! How can he keep in ???
