  • Mad Man opening scene, yes! Great job between Jon Hamm and the black actor who played the waiter in the scene----so well done! So well done!!

  • teriffic..

  • in 1956 I sang this at a school talent show--came in third--guess I am no Don Cherry--then again who is

  • I've collected all the records used on Buchanan & Goodman's "The Flying Saucer" except this one. Thanks for posting.

  • Don is backed by the Ray Conniff Orchestra and Chorus. Doesn't get any better than that!

  • Opening scene music in Mad Men :D

  • the pride of wichita falls, texas.

  • This song was poplar my senior year (1956) in high school. It is a shame that we don't have singers and song like this today in the twilight of my life.

  • the first ever piece of soundtrack apart from the titles - heard on mad men!

  • FYI... That was about 45 years ago so things are kind of vague. :)

  • When I was a kid my mom had a stack of old 45's and 78's. For some reason I seem to remember this on 45 with the flip side being a song called Deep Purple but I can not be certain. Can any one tell me if I'm crazy or not?

  • @fubar1369 "Band of Gold" sung by Don Cherry was released as a 45 on Columbia 40597. The B side on this record was "Rumble Boogie."

  • One of the best true singers of all time. Popular music had its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s, and Don was one of its best ambassadors.

  • again mad man = brilliant! :)

  • Mad Men

  • @soulmziklova

Hey!! A rarity on you Tube: A classy post!! Must be a classy poster.

  • The other side of this (in 1955) on the original 78 was a real nifty rocker. I wonder if anyone has it.

  • @closedcircle1 Rumble Boogie - A Diddely Bup A Diddely Bup A Diddely Diddely Diddely Bup,We're gonna rumble tonight!

  • One of my all time favorites. I wish songs like this were written and recorded today.

  • Late husband and I were staying on the strip in Vegas and took a cab over to the Riviera to see a live show, we were early and went to the bar and there was Don Cherry live, just in the BAR, singing Little Band of Gold. It's a great memory.

  • Nice one,,,my mums favourite when she`s had a few...

  • Great to hear the early version by Don Cherry. Most stations play the remake by Mel Carter, which I also like, but this one deserves more airplay.

  • As Don's grandson, I can honestly say he's an amazing singer, all of his songs are truly amazing and I do enjoy listening to his music.

  • Hmmm....I posted a comment earlier but dont' see it (so far). THANKS so much for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us. I've always loved this song...never fails to lifts my spirits. And Mr Cherry has such a wonderful voice. THANKS again! :)

  • THANKS so much for sharing this "blast from the past" with us. I've always loved this song. So romantic & beautiful. It never fails to lift my spirits whenever I get the chance to hear it. And Mr Cherry has such a wonderful voice. Thanks again! :)

  • MAD MEN!! :-)

  • Don's life hasn't always been a bowl of cherries however. On September 11, 2001 Don and Francine, along with the rest of the world, were watching in horror at the scene unfolding in New York. Unbeknownst to them, the first plane that hit the towers struck at the precise location of his son Stephen's office. His other son Sean called from Florida to break the terrifying news. Francine and Don clung to each other praying that Stephen wasn't there. It wasn't to be. He left behind four sons.

  • I am SO sorry! ;(

This is a fun vocal, and it is a gem! Yes, I heard this on Mad Men. Very cool indeed!

  • Some of my best oldie memories have Don Cherry in the background, thanks for posting this gem!

  • This was one of my favorites back in the old days. He had a wonderful voice. Thanks for posting.

  • He was a great talent from a great era. I always thought that Don Cherry was kind of overlooked. His voice is remarkable.

  • cool singer - and also an exceptional golfer, came close to winning a major(i.e., U.S. Open) a couple times- remarkable talent

  • Great! A wonderful voice. I love Don Cherry singing, I can't get enough of his songs, but when I search for him on youtube I usually have to wade through pages of hockey sites or a trumpet player, but his songs are worth searching for.

    Thanks for the post.

  • It was 1956 and the 7th grade. She (whatever her name was) was my first "true love" and Don Cherry's "Band of Gold" was just out. It was our song. I still know the words, too. It is definitely a classic from the days of really good music.

Yesterday, 1 July, was my first day of eligibility for Medicare! Hahahahaha... how time flies.

  • First true love and you forgot her name-sorry couldn't have been love. I was in grade 10 when this came out and had my first love and her name still comes up in my mind now and then. It was Linda and she was beautiful it only lasted a couple of years but boy we had good times! With music like this it was made for first love!

  • I narrowed it down to two girls but cannot be sure which one it was because there were so many of them... remember, it was the 7th grade, after all. It did not get 'heavy duty' until a few years later and I do remember their names.

  • To Halo101st, Well, I'm 63 next month, not far from M-Care myself, & I love this song; my Dad sang this all the time , & to this day, I believe Don Cherry was truly underated. His voice, & this song, are what the 50's were all-about. Wolfsky9

  • You are so very correct, Wolfsky9. Don Cherry's music is an icon for the '50's. The music, words, and their meanings all blended into one to create a mood not only from the song itself, but it framed an entire era that became known as the "Fabulous Fifties." God, how I miss it.

  • To Halo101st, I cannot--sadly--agree more. Today's music just hurts my ears, & makes me sad. The Fabulous 50's were an amazing time to grow up, & I say Thank-you every day to The Good Lord for giving me that gift. My Parents--both--were passionate music lovers, from Glen Miller to Jo Stafford & Nat King Cole. So, I grew up, listening to, & watching, " their music". Lawrence Welk, Dinah Shore, Perry Como, ect. What a gift that was! My Dad loved Don Cherry,& this wonderful song. Wolfsky9

  • That sounds exactly like my past. Perhaps our ears got old without accompanying fanfare and only now tell us to knock-off subjecting them to the "noise" of today.

Good music is an impossible habit to break.

  • Time goes by in an instant. I'm 28, but I like Don Cherry's music, too. I grew up on all pop crooners - Sinatra, Dino, Sammy, Andy Williams, etc. Their music is timeless, and something we see none of in today's trash.

  • Hahaha... you wait, time will definitely pick up speed for you, this I promise. You are 110% correct about the timeless crooners, too.

  • used over the opening of Mad Men on amc television great song about romance before romance was made a commodity

  • Love this and the memories it brings to mind, those 50's were wonderful years!!!

  • from the late 40's or early 50's but sure brings back a flood of memories. starnger in paradise was another song from this era as was kay starr's wheel of fortune ty for posting

  • Usta argue.......best was.....Don Cherry? Or Don Cornell?

  • Never heard this song but it`s fantastic!

Thanks to annie482000 for sharing it with us! Shining stars and hugs..

    Jan and Susan. x

  • I Haven't this for years, thanks for posting.

  • Still like to hear this one. It 's a classic!

  • My Dad used to sing along to this song when I was a young boy. It's a classic, and it sounds aas good today as it did then. The music and memories are forever. Wolfsky9

  • I could not agree more. "The Fabulous Fifties" were exactly that. It was a great time o grow up.

  • Yes, if you were white and in the upper middle to upper class.

  • I'm sorry, but that comment just makes me tired, now. I am so sick of all this racism and the "poor me" syndrome it has come to represent... Please, just get over it, will you?

I was only remembering my teenage years in the "Fabulous Fifties" with the wonderful memories they held for me. It's a shame you cannot do the same.

  • Ditto!!!!!

  • To chris850t, whoever U R, please get over yourself, & just be thankful for wonderful singing like " Band of Gold", by The Great Don Cherry. I so agree with Halo101st, I'm so tired of hearing all that ' poor me". Time to get over it. Wolfsky9

  • Don came to prominence as a vocalist with the Jan Garber Orchestra in the 1940s, but he also had some success as professional golfer. Good to hear this one (from 1956) again.
