With different words this was my old school song at Blackrock College in Dublin. Rock boys are we. Our title is our glory. Fearless and bold, Whatever the danger be. Onward we go, To flinch or falter never. Rock boys together! The Blue and White for ever! That struck fear into the opposition at Lansdowne Road.

A real act, he could sing and entertain, but was his own worst enemy, he was a drinking partner with Frank Randle.....and that was drinking!! Saw him on stage several times in the 1950's, always a superb performance, always with encores!!!
If i could go back in time to see just one person it would be this wonderful man, i absolutely adore him, and his amazing voice just sends me. What a terrible shame there isn't much much more of him on tape. A truly great man with a gifted voice.
A great entertainer, I also saw him on stage in Blackpool, played to packed, cheering audiences. My dad had all his records, which he played all the time, bless you for posting this, it brought back fantastic memories.
Great voice saw Joe in Blackpool, grand entertainer, any chance of showing Joe singing Soldiers of the Queen? saw a clip from an old BBC TV show when he appeared on the Michael Aspel show.

He certainly had a marvellous voice and great charisma.
But his top As from the chest are dangerously uncovered, and this may account for his early decline. Well before he was 40 [he was born in 1917], when a tenor should be in his prime, his voice had seriously deteriorated from misuse.
The chorus, with different words, was my old school song at Blackrock College. At Rugby games it served as our equivalent of the Haka...to put the fear of God into our opponents.
The first tickets bought when on holiday with my parents at Blackpool was for this wonderful showman. When I last saw him on the North pier he refused to leave the stage despite the curtain being dropped in front of him 3 times by the management. He just kept singing to the roars of the audience, this was 1958-9,wonderful
One of my favourite films is 'Hear My Song'. All hocum of course but still great. I wore the tape out and had to find a DVD.The singer on the film is a relative; the DVD ends before his name appears on the credits though it's on the tape version.
Can anyone find Joe on Aspel show sang Hear my Song with haep accompanyment, also Gay Byrne show Irish TV "this is your life" Soldiers of the Queen BBC 1953 please
If anyone has any more items of Josef let's see them ASAP folks.
Josef Locke is vastly underrated - he is the greatest Tenor ever from the British Isles and in my opinion better than Caruso and Lanza who the Yanks keep on bleating on about-well I've got news for them I have loads of Cd's of Josef and some by many other Tenors from past times including the affore mentioned and Josef Locke is the greatest of them all. Eat your hearts out !! - Glenn West Bromwich, West Midlands.

Re: Smokey1t
His original agent had to shorten his name to fit marque. That's why Joseph McLaughlin became Josef Locke.
dyingearth 4 years ago
The answer was so obvious that I would never have thought of that. I thank you for the reason, regards John
Smokey1t 4 years ago
What would he make it sound so German- if you left it as Joseph Lock-or Loch (like a lake)it would still be as short.

I've always enjoyed the songs by Josef, but why did he change his name from McLaughin to Locke.
Smokey1t 4 years ago
They couldn't fit his name on the bill boards so had to shorten it !

I so loved "Hear my song" in which Ned Beatty does a wonderful portrayal of the marvelous Irish tenor, Josef Locke.
Do you also have "I'll take you home again, Kathleen?" Please post any of the songs from that movie, if you have them! Thank you!!
