  • I think the part in Sparta is still in use by CN.

  • What was the reason the line was abandoned? It is a sad day to see a railroad line be taken up.

  • the ic & gm&o were both north south trackage serving alot of the same towns , when they merged in 1972 the icg was created and began abandoning redundant trackage, also to mention the gm&o's line south of this location was very curvey & hilly terrain & at alto pass illinois there was a 1.5% up hill grade, the ic's line was straighter & more level

  • G.M.& O.in 1985?Thankfuly some railroads were slow to repaint some locos.I once saw a B&O geep in Chicago in '97!!!Imagine my suprise.

  • THIS... IS.... SPARTA DISTRICT!!!!!!!

  • Nice Video & Train!

  • Really well done. Essential info is displayed so I know what's going on and it follows the train and I feel like I'm there. I really enjoy this ICG Spart series!

  • Isn't this where "In the Heat of the Night" was filmed?

  • You know your history. The movie was filmed about 25 miles to the south of my last clip, in Sparta, IL.

  • @eck3300 I just watched that movie interesting movie indeed I gre up watching the series but the origional movie was great interesting train footge incuding the mopac scenes

  • With track speed like that you have to wonder why the line was abandoned?

    Very nice ICG footage!

  • my dad said he rember it

  • Nice horn, and I like the GP30's as well.

  • I'm pleased to see that someone caught these in action and posted them. Wonderful stuff.

  • Does Amtrak service the refurbished station?

  • The last time any train used the station was in 1958 (just over 50 years ago as of this writing)! The rails were pulled up in 1986.

  • yes eck, you're right, technically the last passeneger train was the the Gulf Mobile & Ohio's "Gulf Coast Rebel" on October 14,1958,northbound train #15, that operated from St.Louis Mo. to Mobile Al.

  • yeah that would've been the gm&o 's north bound gulf coast rebel train # 16 to st louis mo. , it was discontinued on october 14th 1958

  • the last passenger train on this line was gm&o's gulf coast rebel train # 16 to st louis & # 15 to mobile al. on october 14 1958, it had eight cars, baggage car, rpo car ,three coaches, dining car & two sleepers & on the lead was two alco pa's numbers 291 & 292, the 292 was the former freedom train locomotive

  • OMG that brings back so many memories, seein at :45 coming by th ole depot in waterloo. Me and my dad used to watch the trains come through Red Bud all the time. I was 7yrs old then. Thanks for bringing back beautiful memories. And look at it now its a busy highway and the ole depot in Waterloo is still there and open as a Twice Nice trift store. Awesome!!! 5 STARS

  • Thanks for posting the video pal. I lived in Valley Station, Kentucky, southwest of Louisville, KY. Illinois Central gulf went through that city and i waved at the engineer at the crossing and he waved back. I remember the orange and white color scheme with the circle-i logo going through the crossing. On August 27, 1986, Paducah and Louisville Railway Company purchased that part of the Illinois Central Gulf and still owns it today.

  • To see a lot of that orange and white you mentioned, check out my "Sparta Sub, 1985 Part 3 of 3".

  • Tracks pulled here this year north of Ripley, MS & south of New Albany. Local now making a mere 25 mile run 3 days a week between the 2 towns at 12-13 MPH. What a shame.

  • yeah the most famous gm&o hot shot through freight was undoughtly trains # 32 & 33, a new orleans la to east st louis illinois, this train operated through ripley & new albany ms from the 1940's up until the ic & gm&o merger in 1972, the gm&o would always use a 3 unit black & white gp35-gp30-gp35, in that order, they would always use the same locos because the locos had to be equipped with a automatic train stop brake shoe

  • Nice, Probably some of the same black & whites that ran from your part of the country through the south for many years. Thanks for sharing.

  • Also the fact that they had dual Airchime P3's on some!

  • yeah on the gp-30's

  • Great vid, really takes me back, I grew up in sparta, and my dad was an agent for the GM&O at the Sparta depot. That's where the move In The Heat Of The Night was filmed in the late 60's

  • loved In the Heat of the Night....I stopped in Sparta returning from Cape Guerardo a few years ago...took pics of the train station, which had been refurbished...are there any more recognizable 'landmarks' from the film still standing?

  • Sadly, no. Most all of it is gone now. Driving around downtown you can see some of he buildings are the same, but most of the major stops in the movie are gone ( ie. the Missouri Illinois shops where a fight was staged, the farm equipment dealership, and the police station/jail).

  • The old depot in Waterloo, IL is still there and they have some pictures on the wall. I wish there were more landmarks like that. I try to tell my kids about it and i wish that i could show them more like i used to see. I used to live just north of Red Bud, on IL159. Now i live down in Modoc, IL.

  • note the alco trucks from trade alco fa's traded for new gp-30's & gp-35'in the early 1960's, gotta love the gm&o for their cost effctive ways of saving money!
