Thanks for the info. Great video. Great rifle. We just took my son's out for the first time last weekend. Sweet shooter. I am very impressed with the 7.62x54.
I appreciate all your videos on the Mosin and i find them very helpful , but i have a Chinese t53 version fo the m44 and it seems as if all the round i fire are key holing and i was wondering if you have any advice on what may be the problem with my rifle.
@Survivalist31 Check the condition of the rifling at the muzzle; it's likely you have a damaged crown and can restore stabilization and accuracy by either slightly shortening and recrowning, or counterboring the muzzle.
@fishblade2 The usual rule is to load jacketed bullets at or .001" under groove diameter (which is what he measured); cast at or .001" *over* groove diameter. In this case, .311" cast bullets are just about right, and there shouldn't be a problem with .311" surplus ammo.
i learned somthing new by watching this video thanks for posting and the idea for the school thing is right on i would rather pay a a knowledgable person like this with a laid back style than some elitist ass keep up the good work looking forward to more instructional vids be safe out there oh yea ignore the morons those are the same guys i was scared shitless in a live fire drill in boot camp very stressful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!l over and out high plains drifter
What if you slug the bore from the muzzle end and not from the reciever side? what if the bore is worn and wider at the muzzle end? Or wouldent that make mutch diffrence?
Interesting and useful info thanks. I bought a 1915 .303 SMLE by SSA (Standard Small Arms of Birmingham. England) a couple of years ago. On trying it out at the range, it was shooting keyholes at 100m and I think the barrel is shot out. I don't have a Go/No-go gauge so will give this idea a try. The rifle is rare in that only 250,000 were made between 1915-18. Money and production probs. I'd like to have it up and running again. Cheers from the UK.
Also it is kinda funny when the "stop leaving stupid comments" box appears.. That rifle looked unloaded, it had a cleaning rod in it..."My eye my eye!"!
Have you ever considered opening up a school ? I think people would pay for a weekend course to attend your classes on how to do a lot of what you are showing on your classes here. Just an idea
You are aware of the fact that FInnish Mosin-Nagants use a 7.62x53R Finnish round vs the russian 7.62x54R. I was told that using the russian longer case isn't recommended on the finnish rifles. Using the Finnish round on the russian riles is apparently OK. Thats why they only sell the x53R here in Finland.
Loved the video. Just got (3) 91/30's for the kids and I to enjoy, they're my first. If I didn't have the plastic hammer (which I don't) I would just use a steel hammer and a piece of wood 2x4 but you made the rubber hammer work fine. Now, where to find one or two of those .32-cal lead balls without buying an entire box ?! LOL.
I'm also getting interested in high-velocity paper-patched bullets but they seem like a lot of experimenting...
@67dodgepolara I used 1/8 oz egg sinker fishing weights to slug mine. I had to fatten it up a little first by smooshing it, got a pretty accurate reading. I think I paid a buck for a small bag of em at W-Mart.
@CharlieDoan Slugging the bore on your rifle helps you choose the propery diameter bullet to shoot out of your rifle when working up handloads. If you are shooting factory ammo, you can pretty much disregard, unless you have no clue what caliber rifle you have.
Excellent video - I'm from the UK and getting info of this kind is VERY difficult. Thanks for posting - and just ignore all the morons posting stupid comments!
@Iraqveteran8888 Any reloading machines that you recommend? My grandfather said to look at maybe getting a Dillon. Are there any that are cheaper but reliable?
The Lee Enfield is the British made bolt action carbine that is chambered in .303 British/Enfield, and unlike any other WWII era rifle that I'm aware of it is the only one fed by a 10 round internal box magazine. Very powerful, very accurate, very fast (for a bolt action) rifle.
That is a nice clear demonstration of slugging the bore. I would have thought to push if through the breech, but starting at the muzzle end gives you more control.
If you can help it, don't use a metal hammer (unless you have ninja skills like I do)...lol
I have to tell people not to use a metal hammer, because knowing my luck, some guy will go to banging on his rifle as hard as he can with a steel hammer.
You can use a ball peen hamer or a tack hammer if you are very careful. You can always use a block of wood to start it. Just hit the wood with a hammer.
Think of how you start a muzzleloader ball and you are there.
They are all around .308, with they occasional .308 and a half out there. The throats usually slug at around .310 or so which is ideal for cast bullets. A 160 grain Lee cast round will fit the thoat well even when sized to .312 and will shoot very good. My K31 will print 1/2" groups at 50 yards. At 100, the groups open up to about 1.5", but still good enough for my puposes and dead on the money.
I can hit 8 inch gongs from 250 yards with cast bullets. Good enoguh for plinking for sure.
I've never seen a "gunsmithing" hammer, but the small $3.00 deadblow (plastic case w/ bearings inside - usually orange) from any hardware store works really good =)
If your Mosin is COUNTERBORED starting the ball from the muzzle end will leave a lead ring around the crown. Annoying and difficult to remove.
I know the mallets you are talking about and yeah they work great...and are cheap which is nice.
You can also slug just the throat and push it back out from the muzzle to get that reading, and yes if the rifle is counterbored that might be a pickle starting from the muzzle.
I bought 7.62 x 54 Mosin Nagant dies from Lee (I dig Lee Products, great craftsmanship, doesn't require second mortgages) for my 91/30's and M44 but they come for .308 diameter. Then I rembered these Nagants are notorious for different bore diameters from one to the next. Will my .308 Nagant Dies handle the slightly larger .310/.311's?
ill have to do that i have a 1945 m44 and i know the diameter of that is .308 where my 2 91/30's were both war productions so the bore diameters are prolly all over the place.

If you got a Mosin that slugs .308 then luck you!
All you have to do is use the .308 diameter expander ball and you should be in good shape.
If you want to load .311 diameter bullets, simply switch to the .311 diameter expander ball unit.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago

Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
With a high velocity rifle round like the 7.62x54r won't using lead bullets cause a lot of fouling?
disturbedone5009 2 years ago
A cast bullet is not going to push as fast as a jacketed bullet. (Not a 1000 yard load by any means)
I can push a quenched WW bullet out to about 2100 with zero leading at all. Fouling isn't an issue either.
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
Does the quenching process really make lead that much harder?
disturbedone5009 2 years ago
Yes...Also you can go through a "baking" process of the quenched bullets to make them even harder (future youtube video subject).
Iraqveteran8888 2 years ago
not pure lead but Wheel Weight alloy, #2 or a home made alloy will work
OwenAB83 2 years ago
Oh ok that makes sense. What other metal(s) are used in the alloy?
disturbedone5009 2 years ago
Tin, Arsenic (found in wheel weights) and something that starts with an A, Sorry i couldn't remember that last bit.
OwenAB83 2 years ago
Ok.
disturbedone5009 2 years ago
thanks man for making this video it isnt as complicated as i thought it would be and i did it to my carcano and i got a reading of .268
azzzz09886543 2 years ago
Nominal diameter for the Carcano is .265 so a .268 isn't to shabby. How does the bore look?

About the rifle?
Well It's a pawn shop find for starters, but when I bought it, the rifle was in this shitty sporter stock...It looked like hell.
I had to search for 2 years to find all the hardware and stock furniture I need to "restore" it to military configuration.
Chad did the stock work and we finally got it all back together. Essentially, the rifle took 2 and half years ro build!
The suspense was killing me!
I didn't know if it worked until I finished it!
