  • Thanks for the info. Great video. Great rifle. We just took my son's out for the first time last weekend. Sweet shooter. I am very impressed with the 7.62x54.

  • pair of dykes lol

  • I bet Barry handles balls all the time. lulz

  • wouldn't this fuck up your rifling??

  • Good info. What do you shoot through your M-39? Do you reload? Thanks.

  • just saying, i wouldn't do this to a bench rest rifle , the crown is king in precision

  • thankyou

  • one should always have a pair of dykes handy. doesn't hurt if they're open minded.

  • POOR SLUG. what did it do to you?

  • At 0:44 you read my mind! <: )

  • Dear Iraqveteran8888,

I appreciate all your videos on the Mosin and i find them very helpful , but i have a Chinese t53 version fo the m44 and it seems as if all the round i fire are key holing and i was wondering if you have any advice on what may be the problem with my rifle.

  • @Survivalist31 Check the condition of the rifling at the muzzle; it's likely you have a damaged crown and can restore stabilization and accuracy by either slightly shortening and recrowning, or counterboring the muzzle.

  • so with your reading of 3.10 diameter you would use what size jacketed bullet?

  • @fishblade2 The usual rule is to load jacketed bullets at or .001" under groove diameter (which is what he measured); cast at or .001" *over* groove diameter. In this case, .311" cast bullets are just about right, and there shouldn't be a problem with .311" surplus ammo.

  • what are the lead balls? are they shot for a shotgun or are they fishing sinkers? where would you find them?

  • Awesome vid, really enjoy your videos man!

  • "Can I have this?"

    "No"

    Aww..

  • i learned somthing new by watching this video thanks for posting and the idea for the school thing is right on i would rather pay a a knowledgable person like this with a laid back style than some elitist ass keep up the good work looking forward to more instructional vids be safe out there oh yea ignore the morons those are the same guys i was scared shitless in a live fire drill in boot camp very stressful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!l over and out high plains drifter

  • Thanks, great video. When I get home I'm going to check my enfiled No4 Mk1*. Haven't reloaded for it yet. Just shooting commercial ammo.

  • would auto motive grease work?

  • "the idea is to catch it, genious." HAHA!!!

  • Anybody ever tell you that you sound like Danny Mcbride?

  • He's saying u can reload the 7.62x54 cartridge with a .308 bullet. You can't go and buy a box of 308 ammo and use it.

  • ok wait so u can made a mossin nagant shoot a .308 and a 7.62x54R>

  • I mean reciever side and not the muzzle end .....sry little tired:p

  • What if you slug the bore from the muzzle end and not from the reciever side? what if the bore is worn and wider at the muzzle end? Or wouldent that make mutch diffrence?

  • i love that well thi idea is to grab em genius sounds like some thing my dad would say to me when i was little haha

  • THE KID REALY LIKES THE SOUND

  • Good Video. Thanks.

  • Contradict yourself much?

  • can you show a video on slugging a revolver barrel. Thanks.

  • Interesting and useful info thanks. I bought a 1915 .303 SMLE by SSA (Standard Small Arms of Birmingham. England) a couple of years ago. On trying it out at the range, it was shooting keyholes at 100m and I think the barrel is shot out. I don't have a Go/No-go gauge so will give this idea a try. The rifle is rare in that only 250,000 were made between 1915-18. Money and production probs. I'd like to have it up and running again. Cheers from the UK.

  • Nice work there vet. I enjoy your videos...

Also it is kinda funny when the "stop leaving stupid comments" box appears.. That rifle looked unloaded, it had a cleaning rod in it..."My eye my eye!"!

  • Comment removed

  • Have you ever considered opening up a school ? I think people would pay for a weekend course to attend your classes on how to do a lot of what you are showing on your classes here. Just an idea

  • i got a question can the same thing be done with a 45 70 marlin

  • 3:06 annotation LOL

  • great info ty.

  • like the kid

  • i could make a joke about balls lube and dykes but im not that low

  • "well the ideas to grab em genius" haha i love your vids

  • NO NO Even though You are pushing a rod through the barrel I am convinced there must be a bullet in there!

  • I have a 1939 Fin marked 91/30 that has been counterbored, is there any chance of doing any damage to the crown with the lead ball?

  • You are aware of the fact that FInnish Mosin-Nagants use a 7.62x53R Finnish round vs the russian 7.62x54R. I was told that using the russian longer case isn't recommended on the finnish rifles. Using the Finnish round on the russian riles is apparently OK. Thats why they only sell the x53R here in Finland.

  • Loved the video. Just got (3) 91/30's for the kids and I to enjoy, they're my first. If I didn't have the plastic hammer (which I don't) I would just use a steel hammer and a piece of wood 2x4 but you made the rubber hammer work fine. Now, where to find one or two of those .32-cal lead balls without buying an entire box ?! LOL.

I'm also getting interested in high-velocity paper-patched bullets but they seem like a lot of experimenting...

  • @67dodgepolara I used 1/8 oz egg sinker fishing weights to slug mine. I had to fatten it up a little first by smooshing it, got a pretty accurate reading. I think I paid a buck for a small bag of em at W-Mart.

  • "can i have this?" "no, not yet"

  • Nice "weapon"

  • Very interesting. Whats the cost like for FMJ vs. cast lead?

  • Sounded like you said, go ahead and lube your left ball.

  • I just sluged my Mosin Nagant M91-30. on the slug. i measured on my calipers...

    High-.3115

    low-.2995

what should i load it to? .311? .308? im getting into reloading.what powder should i use? Preferably i want a 150gr. softpoint for hunting.

    Thanks

  • @Bouzoukiellas Shoot .311 jacketed or .312" cast

  • I just sluged my Mosin Nagant M91-30. on the slug. i measured on my calipers...

  • SLUG??? I NEVER NEED TO DO THIS TO MY RIFLE?? WHAT IS IT?

  • @CharlieDoan Slugging the bore on your rifle helps you choose the propery diameter bullet to shoot out of your rifle when working up handloads. If you are shooting factory ammo, you can pretty much disregard, unless you have no clue what caliber rifle you have.

  • at 0:40 why do we need two lesbians?!?!?!

  • @mikelikefatcat lololol wtf that made me laugh

  • Excellent video - I'm from the UK and getting info of this kind is VERY difficult. Thanks for posting - and just ignore all the morons posting stupid comments!

  • @StonyRC No problem. Thanks

  • @Iraqveteran8888 Any reloading machines that you recommend? My grandfather said to look at maybe getting a Dillon. Are there any that are cheaper but reliable?

  • Thanks for the info on how to check this.

  • @iraqveteran8888

It's great that your whole family participates in these sorts of things, that's awesome man.

    Semper Fi

  • @vinckg

The Lee Enfield is the British made bolt action carbine that is chambered in .303 British/Enfield, and unlike any other WWII era rifle that I'm aware of it is the only one fed by a 10 round internal box magazine. Very powerful, very accurate, very fast (for a bolt action) rifle.

    Semper Fi.

  • lube and dykes? lol

  • is that the lee enfield?

  • Good video, but stupid comment or not... PUT EYE PROTECTION ON THAT KID!!!

  • @getemhi noted...lol. Not a stupid comment...

  • Thanks. Must check my own M39.

  • Do you always lube your balls? Have your lubed balls every hit your eyes when you are using them?

  • @2GrandmaDougherty Yes and no...lol.

  • That is a nice clear demonstration of slugging the bore. I would have thought to push if through the breech, but starting at the muzzle end gives you more control.

    abukamoon - Iraq 2004-2005

  • aso what would be the best way to install a gas check without a sizeng die?

  • i would like to see a levergun being slugged it would be interesting the only way i can think of is to drive it into the receiver...

  • @MrTadaaaaaaaaaaaa Use a .38 caliber round ball for your 9mm...That should work fine.

  • Did you not say DON'T use a metal hammer or am I mistaken? That claw hammer is steel isnt it?

  • If you can help it, don't use a metal hammer (unless you have ninja skills like I do)...lol

I have to tell people not to use a metal hammer, because knowing my luck, some guy will go to banging on his rifle as hard as he can with a steel hammer.

You can use a ball peen hamer or a tack hammer if you are very careful. You can always use a block of wood to start it. Just hit the wood with a hammer.

Think of how you start a muzzleloader ball and you are there.

  • Nice vid! Have you slugged many k31's? And if so how much ware is in a typical run of the mill k31?

    Thanks again!

  • They are all around .308, with they occasional .308 and a half out there. The throats usually slug at around .310 or so which is ideal for cast bullets. A 160 grain Lee cast round will fit the thoat well even when sized to .312 and will shoot very good. My K31 will print 1/2" groups at 50 yards. At 100, the groups open up to about 1.5", but still good enough for my puposes and dead on the money.

I can hit 8 inch gongs from 250 yards with cast bullets. Good enoguh for plinking for sure.

  • Just the info i wanted. Thank you! I have been looking for a good one but finding one local for a good price has been a tough one.

    Thanks again.

  • Very nice ...

  • very informative.......appreciate it.....and that goes for all your videos.

  • NICE MOSIN!!!

  • Shut the fuck up

  • Well presented with a little humor included...lol

    5*

  • I like your gunshop...nice

  • I've never seen a "gunsmithing" hammer, but the small $3.00 deadblow (plastic case w/ bearings inside - usually orange) from any hardware store works really good =)

If your Mosin is COUNTERBORED starting the ball from the muzzle end will leave a lead ring around the crown. Annoying and difficult to remove.

  • @bigbadbarbarian

I know the mallets you are talking about and yeah they work great...and are cheap which is nice.

You can also slug just the throat and push it back out from the muzzle to get that reading, and yes if the rifle is counterbored that might be a pickle starting from the muzzle.

    Didn't think of that...lol

  • Interesting. I guess you want to use cast bullets because you can make them yourself and are cheaper to shoot, right?

Do you have a general idea of what kind of investment are we looking at to buy all the stuff to cast our own bullets?

  • Casting bullets is great to create custom ammo for your rifle and to create projectiles for obsolete calibers.

    Also, it is cheaper, yes.

I am sending you a video.

  • Neat video! I just learned something new!

    5 stars!

  • @MrGixxer666

    Thanks for the support Gixxer!

  • haha i love kids as long as there not mine... lil gunsmith in the making...

  • Thats right...I'll have him punching out AK receivers in no time...

  • I bought 7.62 x 54 Mosin Nagant dies from Lee (I dig Lee Products, great craftsmanship, doesn't require second mortgages) for my 91/30's and M44 but they come for .308 diameter. Then I rembered these Nagants are notorious for different bore diameters from one to the next. Will my .308 Nagant Dies handle the slightly larger .310/.311's?

  • If you got a Mosin that slugs .308 then luck you!

All you have to do is use the .308 diameter expander ball and you should be in good shape.

If you want to load .311 diameter bullets, simply switch to the .311 diameter expander ball unit.

  • ill have to do that i have a 1945 m44 and i know the diameter of that is .308 where my 2 91/30's were both war productions so the bore diameters are prolly all over the place.

  • Yeah the bores on them vary for sure. I have seen them as small as .309 and as large as .313.

  • bore diameter aint the issue.... if your bore diameter is .308 id guestimate your groove diameter to be .312+ thats where the problems will be. a true spec russian barrel should idealy be .300 bore and .311 groove. I have a 1939 tula that is exactly that and prefers .308 to .309 bullets

  • They slug all over the place.

My Finn M39 slugs at .309 which is great for cast bullets.

My little M38 slugs at .312 which is a little bit of a challenge because I have to size bullets from the Enfield molds.

  • give that boy the damn slug !!! lol, rofl

  • Oh he got it alright. He wanted to flatten it out with a mallet.

  • Great info! thanks a bunch.

  • You are quite welcome

  • very nice video, very informative. but lol, jacob was like "can i have this?" kinda cracked me up

  • Yeah he's a character...I gave him the lead slug after we were dont with it...He just wanted to flatten it out with a hammer...LOL

  • Thats correct, go way to see how large the bore on an unkown firearm is also.

  • With a high velocity rifle round like the 7.62x54r won't using lead bullets cause a lot of fouling?

  • A cast bullet is not going to push as fast as a jacketed bullet. (Not a 1000 yard load by any means)

I can push a quenched WW bullet out to about 2100 with zero leading at all. Fouling isn't an issue either.

  • Does the quenching process really make lead that much harder?

  • Yes...Also you can go through a "baking" process of the quenched bullets to make them even harder (future youtube video subject).

  • not pure lead but Wheel Weight alloy, #2 or a home made alloy will work

  • Oh ok that makes sense. What other metal(s) are used in the alloy?

  • Tin, Arsenic (found in wheel weights) and something that starts with an A, Sorry i couldn't remember that last bit.

  • Ok.

  • thanks man for making this video it isnt as complicated as i thought it would be and i did it to my carcano and i got a reading of .268

  • Nominal diameter for the Carcano is .265 so a .268 isn't to shabby. How does the bore look?

Slug it one more time to be sure...A cast bullet in the Carcano can produce some very nice results.

    Easy isn't it?

  • lol "the point is to catch it genious.."

  • I got a chuckle out of that too!

  • Thanks for the info...

  • DId you measure the markings set by the Lands or the Grooves of the barrel?

  • You measure the grooves when slugging your bore. They will be the raised indentions... not the pressed in marks.

  • Comment removed

  • Good question...I can't believe I didnt mention it but dp908 beat me to it...You want to measure the bearing surface of the "bullet"

  • Alright, That clears that up thanks for the help you two. ;)

  • Gotcha. :) Good vid man... better than anything I can do and that is one beautiful M39. If I wasn't going to buy an enfield this weekend I'd make an m39 my 3rd mosin.

  • Could never have too many mosins! lol.

  • Thanks man...There is actually a long story behind this rifle but its too long to tell here.

    Thanks for the contributions.

  • how about making a vid about it...

  • About the rifle?

Well It's a pawn shop find for starters, but when I bought it, the rifle was in this shitty sporter stock...It looked like hell.

I had to search for 2 years to find all the hardware and stock furniture I need to "restore" it to military configuration.

Chad did the stock work and we finally got it all back together. Essentially, the rifle took 2 and half years ro build!

    The suspense was killing me!

I didn't know if it worked until I finished it!

  • Well seemingly it did work out just fine.

    Very nice looking rifle.

    Thanks for the info.

  • Sure thing. Thanks for the support rockin robin.
