  • My dog does the exact same thing ! he is a beagle too ! He is about 2 yrs. old I have no clue what it is ! Alot of resouces say its a inward sneeze...Idk !

  • My beagle does the exact same thing - it's very random. Happens when he scarfs his food, happens in his sleep, happens when he's playing. Vet says it's common - like a reverse sneeze. I notice that he panics a little bit sometimes while it's happening which seems to make it worse. I just pet him until it goes away. Doesn't last long, but kind of scary the first time I saw it! My pitt-bull mix does the same too, but not as often.

  • Notice how the dog stopped as soon as the light went on. I assure you it is stress related. If the dog is tense it won't swallow. It just wants reassurance. It doesn't matter where you massage. I massage my dog's ears. It always stops.

  • Oh and Backwards Sneezes are VERY common in the Beagle breed he said as well..

  • This is purely caused by stress in the dog. Just rub his ears and jaw to de-stress him and let him know he is OK and not alone.

  • @lynnebourne Incorrect unlike apparently every1 on the net wen my Beagle wen threw this i took him to a vet with tapes of the attack he was having. the vet said simply he is having what they call a backwards sneeze you treat it the same way you would treat allergy's with Benedryl.

  • my beagle does that too, one time she did it for like minutes at a time so i reasearched about it, also, instead of putting your hand on their wet gooey nose, (lol) you can kind of massage their throat and it calms them down

  • Poor litlle dog i hope hes gonna be ok

  • This is very similar to what my beagle does only his seem to last for minutes and his muscles seem to constrict. I don't know if he's having a seizure or what it is but it freaks me out when it happens and it happens frequently.

  • @BigCJFan don't freak out, its like us having a sneezing attack, theirs is just backwards, its called reverse sneezing, my beagle does it too and she'll do it for minutes, but to calm them down and make it stop, you can massage their throat, like kind of just rub under their head by their throat, it seems to help with my beagle

  • I have an 8 yr old Basset Hound who JUST started doing this about 2 weeks after I moved from the dry desert southwest to greener, wetter, Austin, TX. I'm thinking the onset has to be related to the move, maybe an allergic reaction to the climate change, mold or something. I have also noticed labored and rapid shallow breathing since these attacks started. Anyone else have those sypmtoms too? Need to find a good vet here I guess, but these videos and comments are really helpful-thanks all.

  • @debbwagg I too live in a very wet and humid area. But from what my vet told me, this is a thing custom to beagles & hounds. has to do with a flab on the back of their throats. when my dog does it, i cover his nose and massage his throat to force him to swallow. once he swallows he's good to go.

  • @netgirl1807

sounds to me like a variant of reverse sneezing my shih tzu has it..

  • No, actually this is reverse sneezing, and every beagle I've ever had has done this. It's perfectly normal.

  • tnx for this video! My half-breed chihuahua does this and makes me worry all the time!

  • it's neither a cough nor a collapsing trachea, it's a reverse sneeze. an abnormal breating pattern that causes the dog no harm. no specific treatment although benadryl sometimes helps

  • my beagle just did this as she came in tonight it lasts for like 5 minutes

  • My beagle has done this at least once a day for years. I freaked out the first time, but he's always perfectly fine before and after.

  • right now, my 1 1/2 yr old female german shepherd does this too, it happened 2 in the morning and i was freaking out on what to do with her to make her feel better, it happens every several minutes, oh what to do my poor doggie...

  • my beagle does this 2 when it first happend i was freaking out! But it happens for just a few minutes and she is fine and running around thanks for all the info about it everybody!

  • ahh remember the first time our beagle did this. it was so scary! even when the ones we have now do it still scares the crap out of me. i've noticed it more in our female beagles, not so much the male. poor babies. :(

  • Wow - you guys are all so helpful! Our 6 month old beagle does this alot recently - and has us worried, but after reading these notes, this helps alleviate our anxiety. We have not seen a vet about it....

  • My beagle does it as well. It's a collcapsing trachea. It a genetic defect in a lot of beagles. Rubbing thier throat usually stops it.

  • My beagle does this, usually she will wake us up around 4-5 am and she has little attacks. She freaks herself out when it happens and we usually have to snap her out of it. Hers last up to 2 minutes but sometimes only 10 seconds. Its either reverse sneezing or I had a vet tell me a deviated septum. I was told by another vet that she has an extra flap or excessive tissue in her nose and it irritates easier. Hopes this helps.

  • I have found that by simply covering my dog's nose during his episode he will stop. Seems like that extra flag you mentioned gets in the way of his breathing so if you cover his nostrils it will force him to swallow thereby the flap readjusts and allows him to breath normally.

  • omgsh thanks so much for posting this! my newly adopted 2 year old beagle was doing the exact same thing a while ago and it got me so worried! we just came from a walk and after a few minutes, he started doing this. i thought overexercised him because hes a little bit overweight. but i guess like other people said, it might have been from the tugging of the leash. thanks again!

  • my beagle does this too especially after pulling hard on the leash during a walk

  • Thats what our beagle did before she passed away last year January. Could never figure it out.

  • My beagle does this too, mostly after he's been pulling on his leash for a good bit. freaked me out at first!

  • My Beagle does the same thing...sounds exactly the same...sometimes it lasts for a few minutes...It usually happens when I walk her and she is pulling hard on her harness...I just let her ride it out because she obviously needs to clear her nasal passages...the first time it happened I freaked out...but after consulting with the vet and checking out info online...it's just a beagle being a beagle...I LOVE MY MAGGIE!!!!

  • Both of my Beagles do this once in awhile also...I have tried the nose blocking and it works to stop it.

  • mine does that too every once in a while

  • I finally found the solution to control my dog's weird asthma (reverse sneezing).

    I changed his bed.

Since he was a puppy , he'd sleep in those big pillowy beds.

He's now been sleeping in a flat bed that doesn't gather dust and his weird asthma thing has slowed down remarkably.

  • so the solution to my dog's "weird asthma" can be not letting her sleep outside at night when it's cold, keep her away to spots with dusts and also clean or change her bed? and during the attack, cover her nostrils and maybe give her some water? from all that i mentioned all of these help? need your feedback pls

  • My Beagle does this also...your dog sounds exactly like mine does when she "hacks". Otherwise, she is perfectly healthy. I guess they all do it from what I've read!

  • Thanks for sharing -- we recently adopted a 1 and 1/2 year old beagle and although I had read about the reverse sneeze, I had not heard it.

I found your video and it sounds just like our dog! It nearly made me laugh because its EXACTLY the same. I tried the trick of covering his nose and it worked too. Poor guys -- I think they all do this.

  • My beagle does this as well. I read that its nothing to worry about however. Its just them clearing out mucus or clearing irritaton. It's completely harmless to dogs.

  • I have a beagle that makes the exact same sound - it is a reverse sneeze. There is really nothing you can do about it, I just try to keep the dog calm while it is happening, some pp say to plug the nose with your hand so the dog can breathe out the their mouth (although I haven't tried it).

  • thx Shebot99 for your response. I did try covering his nose while he does this and it did work to stop the current reverse sneeze. But weeks/months later he'll still have it.

  • If anyone has had this issue with their dog please post how you resolved it. I'd appeciate that.
