i know it looks they are pushed very hard by adults, but the kids themselves are determined, look at her when she's doing leg raises--she's giving gravity the 'fuck off' face throughout the whole set.
@iluvgymnastics663 they don't have leos cuz they don't have the money to buy one and they don't sell leos in china. actually, only children from extremely poor families will go and do gymnastics. so there's no point of spending money to get a leo for them.
i loved her determination. in china, going to train to become a gymnast is one of the ways of getting out of the slums. that is, if you have the right body and stuff.
Gymnastic it's about being PERFECT, and yes they do have a standar which have to be just like that, the element required certain things to be perfect and a lot of gymnast can do it, so there it's not excuse like: it can't be done. About chinese people, they are a LOT OF CHINESE, if you are not good at something what the hell are you gonna do? I know, TRY HARDER. Did you know that in Cuba only the ones that do music or sports can leave the country or have the best food? YOU HAVE TO TRY HARDER!
"determination and courage" well, they actually have no other choice. it hurts me to see how those people treat that kids, like they were robots, and they are only good if they work well :(
i feel sorry seeing she(them) crying, but my strongest feeling is appreciation. It's those little girls' determination and courage that touch me so much
I'll translate the whole video for you in a few key phrases...
"Cry all you want, in here, we drink tears to fuel our inner fire."
"Don't you dare let go! Remember what happened last time you let go? Cry all you want but hold on!"
"What will you do if you fail here, huh? do you think anyone will love you? Do you think China will love you? NO! If you fail here you fail everyone, including China."
I can understand where her parents are coming from, successful athletes are treated very well in China. You can go on all you want about how Americans start training later and compete at the same level which is true. But there are way more people in China than the states, but they can only bring the same Max number of athletes. These girls have to compete against each other for those spots and who's training is the government going to fund? The girl who has 7 years or 3 years of training?
Wow she is such a strong little girl in more ways then one.. It's amazing that she can do those things!! But that training is just a bit too much.. Or way too much! She still so little!
I have seen this same documentary here on Youtube with English subtitles, but I can't find it anymore. I remember that the little girl they feature is 6yo, and that she has asked to quit gymnastics, but her parents try to encourage her every day that it will pay off if she does well and wins medals. That's about all I remember of it.
@kayper54 I would love to know what happened to this little girl; I am guessing this was made quite a while ago, so it looks like she didnt make it to the national team. So sad; she is such a cute little thing too:)
I find it strange that some countries think that you have to train future Olympians like gladiators from very early in their life. Our Olympians have trained for a long time too but more like a past time and our people perform at the same level as the Chinese.Acually, if you take into consideration the population difference we put out more high level athletes than they do.
Oh no! Her muscles are going to be damaged. My favorite thing about chinese gymnasts is that they are persistant and take gymnastics seriously. Btw I am not bashing american gymnasts. After all, I am one.
I really look up to this little girl and others like her. She has so much strength, determination and courage to carry on even when it's hurting her. I really admire the chinese for having these characteristics of honour in their culture to succeed and be their best but I really hate the methods of training. I wish they had some sort of balance which pushed the gymnasts enough to improve without causing them so much pain :(
@xaimeeXP In order to reach that level of strength and flexibility one must undergo extreme discomfort and lots of pain. It's just the nature of the sport. I bet they too wish that there was some easier way that wasn't as painful, but this is only wishful thinking for us and them.
i just wan to hug her and wipe away her tears, dont these people know that if you wANT to learn how to do a split you have to do it slowly or you will have permenant damage if you just force them into it, they could get seriously hurt. sheesh these people are so hard on these poor little girls. i feel so sorry for her!!:((
in the evening Kaili's brought home and does homework. Her dad says about the training:"it's hard work for her, but excel at this is way better than go back to the poor rural areas." "hoping she becomes a champion of course. the best would be a world champ"
leg-ups, Kaili had to do 50, so of course she was looking bad. (btw it's unfair to show it like "while other normal kids are playing happily, Kaili is crying because of too much training" because other kids work hard at school as well and of course Kaili can have fun at the gym too, they just didn't show it!) of course the teachers feel bad as well when they see a kid crying, but they "can't be soft, have to go on pushing the children, only then kids will learn to persevere".
for the people who don't understand this: this documentary is about this girl Kaili Li her daily life. she and her parents live in some poor neighboorhood in shanghai, her parents work at a vegetable market and her dad gets up every night at 1 am to bring in fresh vegetables. she dresses herself, is brought to school and studies like a normal kid until noon. then she and 4 other girls are brought to the gym, where she trains intensively. for some reason, while the other girls had to do 30
@LatviaRullz1 Why would I cry for your sorry, racist ass? I'd rather beat it senseless like your KKK father (and mother if you happen to be a bitch) use to. We Chinese all know kung fu right motherfucker?...
@LatviaRullz1 Because your SO much better and have more potential in life, by criticizing a nation that has progressed way faster than any country in the world doesn't make you any better, just because their lifestyles don't fit adequately into your comfort zone doesn't make it right for you to judge them by what they do everyday. And lastly if you don't know the language don't try and critic it.
