  • I actually like the 70's, they're really cool, completely different from anything we've had before!

  • To be honest I don't think freightliner could care less about whether we like how they look or not. At the end of the day there not there to "look good" there to "Haul Freight Quickly And Efficiently". If they are doing a better job than the 66's of course they're here to stay. Atleast until something better comes along.

  • they look great, better then a class 37! ONLY JOKING THERE FULL OF HORSE SHIT!

  • Bloody rubbish!

  • @WirralCarper What, the 1940s ? !!

  • douse any one know where there going to be run, any where near Nottingham?

  • i prefer the look of the class 66 myself

  • The Edsell of the train world!

  • wtf class 70 load of shit wheres the class 57 freightliner or 66 not the 70 typical american desgin better use as scrap a cross between a class 20 and a 58 both kinda of useless

  • I like them but next to a 66 who would want them?

  • Nice horn at 0:58! :-D

  • Who designed these monstrosities, David Blunkett?

  • first the 66s then the 67s and now the 70s, it just gets worse! Bring back the 56s!!!

  • Just remember. GE of America were given the specs and this what FreightLiner asked for. They will never run in the USA, they are to under powered and small for our needs. The only thing we could us them for are and small branch lines, but for long haul pulls. They would burn out.

  • @Mrg610 3,700hp is more powerful than a good chunk of Union Pacific's fleet. The reason these locos wouldn't be much use in the US is that they're not heavy enough, which means that they can't put that power to the rails to shift a long train. For example, they have 700hp more than an SD-40 but are 80,000lb lighter. (And, as mathuetax points out, they'd need a lot of refitting.)

  • Good video...

of the worst looking thing ever.

GE build Genisis for Amtrak and we get this!

    lol ?

    :-(

  • Class 66 ftw

  • i hate the 70s they are ugly pices of shity yuck yuck just absalutely horible in about a year they will probably get chucked out of this cutry and go to america or sonthing

  • @shaun508124 ...just have to get used to 'em I guess, the next 6 will soon be on the way.

  • @DownGrand1967 The next five just left the builder's plant in Erie on a ship yesterday bound for Newport.

  • @shaun508124 Hmm, maybe you will follow them heading for a English and spelling lesson ..........

  • @shaun508124

Going back to the US is unlikely, the engines are spec'd for Freightliner Group. While the track gauge is the same they would require quite a bit of retrofitting to comply with US regs. While the Jenbacher Type6 prime mover seems to be solid, I'm not ware that any railroad in the US has one. With a ready supply of already compliant engines in the US a reverse move isn't going to happen.

  • @shaun508124 oh and your not?

oh and 14002 people have watch this and liked it so your comment dosnt really matter

  • ...And I have to agree with crompton 33001.

  • An interesting piece of film. Sad however that the British are no longer capable of building locomotives themselves. The land of Stephenson, Ivatt, Gresley and Stanier! Does that worry any of you?

    Regards, flippop101, Germany

  • pile of yankee SHIT

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • seems very american in looks ;)

  • seems very american in looks ;)

  • seems very american in looks ;)

  • seems very american in looks ;)

  • Love the clag at 3:43

  • And the award for ugliest loco on UK tracks goes to...

it's a 58 on steroids or hollywoods idea of a 58 in a transformers movie!

and why class 70? why not 68 or 69? why use something that was used before?

    Good video though downgrand1967 :)

  • @marvinthemartian666 shut up about looks. its boring now. its a great loco and be quiet!

  • @HSTHoward I have my opinion and you have yours and both are valid! you like it, i dont! and i'm free to express my opinion on here just as you are but dont tell me to shut up!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A grotesque piece of foreign shit. I always thought classes 70-79 were reserved for DC Electric & ED loco's :(

  • give me a 37 anyday

  • Last I heard, Freightliner has cancelled their order for a further 30+ Class 70's because they have had nothing but problems with them from the word go. 70001 and 70004 have been sat inour yard for weeks awaiting modifications.

  • I don't mind the design tbh. The body shape isn't all that bad - reminds me slightly (and yeah, I am clutching at straws here...) of the class 58s and that can only be a good thing. Mon the Plugs!

  • AARRRRGH!!! Help! I wanna gouge out my eyes with a spoon!!!

For sure something this ugly could only be the product of American designers?

I wonder if the RMT will be negotiating for occupational health compensation for eyesight damage for crews having to work with these monstrosities?

  • MUG

  • crap i remember when freightliner had decent traction ,duffs and tractorsand evan 57s they will never last 30+ years like the legend that is the class 37 nuff said

  • more like 50 years my friend :) Class 66's and 70's around in the 2050's I don't think so

  • At first in no livery, i thought they were awful, but they look alright in freightliner and they will grow as they work, they are an alternative to the 66s and basically they are an upgraded 58.

  • @PrentonPimp

Can you refute my statement, Mr PrentonPimp? I'm curious about it.

  • @emperorgrant

What do you want with me? British Railroad have a bad record all over the world. whether you like it or not.

  • there not rail roads there railways besides foreign crap is boring give me a class43 anyday

  • GWRtom, You need to learn to spell so that we may understand what you are trying to convey.

  • as for refurbing old locos, class 57s from the old 47s... a lot of dosh for very little loco with a life span of a b.r. butty...

  • every loco in the uk is just a box with 2 cabs and an engine. siemens cannot build british coz theyre not british. a class 60 cost a million more than a 66 & thats why we just won`t make any more...get over it...

  • dont know why we cant go back to building our own trains instead of importing

  • couldn't agree more, but at least they have two-tone horns, as opposed to the American style 'groan' horns.

  • cant afford to make decent ones anymore.

  • I have seen 2 other vids of Class 70s. One on the North London Line on container train and the other on coal hopper empties. Anyone got a vid of a Betty (as in Ugly Betty) on a loaded heavy train?

  • Good video. Its got a very american look about it. Although not the 1st uk loco to look how it does think of the 58's. Sounds better than a 66 mind!!

  • Impressive! Project Genesis has payed off and I like the noise of the engine! :)

  • not sure about its looks, i cant wait to see what it can do, was suprised to see it clag in one of the clips. thanks for posting. 5*

  • It' s peculiar for me, that Britain have no own Railroad Industry. They sold a lot of British companys to foreign countries.

Also EWS at last. Railroad cars and equipment must be imported.

Why sold Britain his industry to foreign countrys? The industrialisation starts up in Britain.

  • You're right there Noch.

Unfortunately, the political types of the UK couldn't give a stuff about UK industry, because they are far too busy lining their own pockets.

I heard that Siemens wanted to build a factory in the UK when they won orders to build UK trains, but the government just weren't interested.

    This Country Is Fucked.

  • what a knob attitude from the frog....

  • Get some wind-proofing!

    Good apart from that!

  • bog off frenchie

  • Are you bored? Yes, you are, find some mates/enemies in the real world

  • Terrarexus, the retard know all, and gods gift to all women ( well those that are desperate and blind )

  • terrarexus - I notice you have 'Heil Hitler' on your page (I right-clicked and dragged) - that just about sums you up. I pity you.

  • terrarexus - thanks for the death threats. You are pathetic.

  • Looks like a refurbished class 58

  • ...and hopefully will sound as good when under load...

  • When I heard one on that video of one hauling freight at night they sound crap under load.

Traction motors screaming but no engine noise - like an EMU.

They actually sound better light engine from what I have seen of them so far.

  • @DownGrand1967

They have the same power output at the engine, same CO-CO arrangment.

Roughly the same 'BONE' design, but they have a lower top speed.

Makes you wonder if it was worth scrapping / selling the 58's

  • Looks like LDV brought a new buffered diesel on the market

  • very good quality vid btw! 5*

  • MODERN DAY 58 / KESTREL ?

LOOKS QUITE A NICE MACHINE BUT IT WILL NEVER BEAT THE "SULZER BEASTIES" 47s ha ha

  • Ah Kestrel, now she was a real beastie !

  • woow awsome . clagging already hehe preds rule

  • Interesting.

Well, people said the Class 67 was ugly at first...

    well, they still do ....

  • Beauties

  • look at this worst tracks at the beginning- unbelievable

and why have British Rail no electro locomotives and only these uneconomic Diesel Engines?

Do you have your own oilfields?

  • Comment removed

  • Shocking isn't it. Damn "British Rail" and their wonky rails...

The line was due to be electrified a year ago but "British Rail" couldn't find anywhere to plug it in.

  • Its bloody hideous, but it sounds like a loco as opposed to a shed, which sounds like a sound effect from Doctor Who....eek eek eek eek eek. Mind you, so long as they are quiet in the cab, ride well and are cool in the summer I dont care what they look like!

  • Each to his own viewpoint, I think they look quite sleek in the flesh ! Think of a Class 58 with Class 67 cab ends.... the rear facing window in the cab (similar to a Class 20) also affords the driver a rear view of his train, handy when making shunt moves etc.

Thanks for taking the time to comment !

  • @SLUG5not When I've ran US GEVO locomotives, there is nothing quieter. There is absolutely nothing quieter than a GE.

  • People may say they are ugly but at the end of the day they look modern and that is exactly what the rail industry is after. People said the same about the class 58 simply as it was going to takeover many class 56 diagrammes. Everything changes and in 10-20 years it will possibly be freight multiple units taking most of the freight around our network so make the most of it !!

  • Good point, and I don't think it's too bad looking a locomotive...

  • I hated the Class 60's originally, and now I'd kill to see 30 per day instead of Freds. These'll grow on us.

  • Nice catch!

I think it looks ok. Can't wait until I can catch her myself!

  • Thanks. I saw her again today and have just uploaded more footage...

  • Please see website link under my profile for more (similar) photo's...

  • Strange thing. Sounds better than a Shed though. And it clags a little .

  • Thank you for the chance to see this new loco and for the stills at the start which gives a longer look than video at speed!

  • Thank's very much. It was as dark as ditchwater down there despite appearances. Even shooting at ISO800 the images are slightly blurred (you can hear the slow camera shutter speed clicking away) !

  • fantastic video again, and also stills. i have lived on the sutton park line for years. never get to see the special locos through. wud u have any advice where i can find what locos and when there running please.

  • Many thanks. I suppose for a "quick fix" of rare moves you could subscribe to one of the Railgen sites. Or otherwise stay lineside for a few hours getting to know the regular freight patterns, and maybe something half-decent will turn up (my usual method) !

  • Great vid and stills! Nice to see it at a bit of speed. Looking forward to them visiting the south!

  • Nice vid, cracking stills, thanks very much.

People have commented on the slightly odd-ball looks, which will probably become an aquired taste, but if the loco is safer and more comfortable for those driving it then that has to be a massive positive.

Any ideas when they will start earning their keep?

  • Thanks very much. I would think they will be working trains within a couple of weeks or so, once the driver familiarisation has taken place...

  • They look like a "Dalek" ! Hope they sound better thrashing out of Peak Forrest. Nice vid buddy

  • Should do, will they work that area though ?

  • Certainly a different noise to the one we're all used to.

    Cheers,

    Marcus

GEGen Yahoo Group - The Yahoo group for the class 70.

  • Many thanks Marcus, much better than any "yinging" 66 !

  • I dont think its ugly. its an awesome Locomotive

  • Sure is a good one !

  • Nice loco, similar to a class 58. How do you get to film on the trackside without getting in trouble?

  • Filmed from a foot crossing within Sutton Park, a public right of way...

  • Thanks, I wondered how you did this one. Many years ago, me and my brother were trying to get photos of passing trains through a gate down the side of a road bridge near Eastleigh and a passing rail employee stopped his van and started shouting at us, he thought we were trying to break through the gate and get on the track which we weren't.

  • I think we've all been there, the trials and tribulations of a rail photographer !

  • Yes, LOL.

  • Hey,i like this loco, are they made in Canada? It is about time we had a new kid on the block LOL.

  • I believe so John, thanks for the comment...

  • No Problem glad to ablige

  • They are manufactured in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA.

  • Excellent multi tasking there mate, you did well. You could do with being an octopus. Nice machine. You are a jammie beast! Who was the watcher in the woods?

  • Ah yes... he asked what was due, I told him a brand new loco. "Has it got a name ?" he asked... no, I said, and with that he walked off....only to come running back when the loco appeared from around the corner !!

  • Awesome Video!

I think they are brilliant! Good to see a nice bit of new traction around, will now rival the 66 i guess, when they bring more of them to the UK.

They look like 58's, and (I think) they sound like 60s! What more would you want? lol.

    5* and faved! :)

  • Thanks Andy, and great comments too.

    I like 'em !

  • cool video, it sounds great!

  • I thought so too, like to hear one straining at the leash at the head of a heavy train...

  • excellent video!

i got thold they were down by me.

    5* video, +favourite

    great catch.

  • Many thanks.

The design lines of the loco seem to flow nicely, but head-on from a distance they look all yellow, like a tamper !

  • Excellent video, and thanks for allowing us to see this historic event...5* Bob

  • Many thanks Rob, i'm just lucky enough to live along this route I guess.

Incidentally the Blue Pullman sets were "road tested" along this line in 1959, now that I would have liked to have filmed !

  • Good video compilation and some excellent shots! 5* Looks too "North American" for my European tastes BUT it could sound quite tasty with a big load!

  • Thats right, just waiting for a decent sized train behind it !

  • Good stuff.

  • Thanks Dave.

  • Looks like a misshaped 58 to me, How horrible, still it will make a change to boring 66s, Good vid mate

  • Agreed !

  • IT Has defiately got a meaty roar to it

  • Be nice to see it haul a train !

  • Well done on the first UK daytime footage! Ugly looking thing but it certainly sounds a lot better than a Shed!!

  • Good comment, thanks !

I think it looks better "in the flesh"...

  • LOL i love these because they sound good and clag, 70001 FAILED dead batteries and 70002 FAILED waiting new parts! nice one freightliner and GE 5* favs

  • Cheers Howard, batteries no big deal but you'ld expect a new battery to hold it''s charge !

  • well i can say that 70002 is fooked! to put it correctly! cheers for the video

  • I'm told that 001 is going to be named this weekend....

  • how?

  • Not sure what the name will be, but the rumour was that it will be named very soon !

  • thanks :)

  • I love the shape, i's curvy stylish, a 66 is just "big box, long box, big box" sort of a shape. this hs a flowing front. Still not as good as a class 60 though.

  • Indeed !

  • top class catch mate!! added to favs!

  • Thanks !

  • Awesome video 5*****

  • Greetings Holland !

  • great video mate its hellfire 5stars and fav

  • Thanks very much...

  • nice one ! 5*s and a fav ,,they sound really USA style loco ..great shots m8 top stuff

  • Thanks mate, great stuff...

  • I bloody love em, long live the 70's i recon

  • Agreed !!

  • Wwicked vid, it may well be as I grew up with the class 66 but I do still prefer 66s to 70. They look so odd and nothing like any other. Atleat 66s look like 59s thats some other loco

  • Great stuff, thanks a lot, cheers.

  • what do class 31s look like?

what do class 56s look like?

i grew up with 66s but i still prefer the stuff built between 1930 & 1970

  • 31s look good with a bit of the cab windscreen raised up in the middle and 56 look simmular but not the same as 47s. Or should I say are nearist to 47s. Have a look on google if you like, or I have some class 31s on my channel =D

  • There we go, you like Class 31s although they have no look-alike. yet why dont you like the class 70?

i think it looks a little like a class 58

  • great pics 5*

  • Cheers...

  • nice footage and pictures

  • Thank you, much appreciated.

  • Not bad actually... they dont look that bad, but I still prefer the 66s! Have they failed yet? ;) 5*

  • I honestly prefer the design to the 66s, sorry !

  • ...even if they do resemble Class 58s with Class 67 cabs..... !

  • Brilliant but i agree with mststv, its a crap loco, theres nothing interesting about them, apart from them being "new" 5*

  • Fair comment, you're not alone !

    Cheers...

  • try sitting on em for 8 hours...... and as for design...i worked on 56s and whoever designed them should have been strapped in one the seats with a vibe up his ass to assimilate one with the engine running for 12 hours and his next design might have been better...

  • 56s sound better, look better, control better, and you dont have to lean over to grab the controls, and tbh, its my opinion what i think of them, so theres no point trying to change my mind!!!

  • would not wish to change anyones opinion, mine is that a class 37 sounds like it is 3000 hp more than it really is but any new loco regardless of where it is built , will have to comply with new noise and emission levels. 56s were the worst riding loco ever with the 31s a very close second.

  • in that 1st shot you can see how bloody shoddy the trackwork is.

    i like theClass 70. better than a 66

  • I think the trackwork undulation is a result of compression due to it being a telephoto shot equilvilent to 360mm in film terms, which is a hefty magnification....

Any apparent faults are due to my lens and not the rails.

Full marks for spotting that though !

  • @NSMerryweather4771

The track here was relaid fairly recently (within the past few years), its certainly not in bad shape. Its dead straight at this location for a couple of miles. Depending on the time of day the light can play tricks on how it appears, go there on a hot day in summer and stand on the crossing looking down the line and you'll see all sorts of weird distortions and heat hazes, you don't need a telephoto lense to see it!

  • Still dont like them though...

  • I think I must be the only one who does !!

  • I like them, I'm impressed by them from what I've seen in videos so far.

  • Thanks, so do I....

  • Fantastic! Great to see one under its own power on the British Mainline at Last! nice bit of clag as well on your first pic!
