  • Man if i ever win the lottery i am paying that man to live in my house and just sit around and play guitar all day.

  • What is he playing at 1:37? I know it's a chet tune and I know I should know what it is but I can't think of the name

  • @TheElectromagnet and @surferrandys first is Oh by Jingo, 1:30 is 3 little words, 2:00 is Salty Dog rag, 2:34 Poor People of Paris, 3:39 is 12th street rag. Hope it helps

  • @cappoli Sure Does. I spent awhile but I did finally figure out 3 little words which is the one I really wanted to know. It's on the Chet atkins live at the bottom line dvd I have. Thanks alot !

  • amazing picking....almost unbelievable

  • In 1996 I my-self a Young Guitarist who enjoyed mainly Rock and METAL Guitar was invited by my Teacher to attend a Taylor Concert at the Music store and I saw Doyle Dykes Play nearly 3 Hours only 4 feet from Me . I sat and watched the Most AMAZING Guitarist Play and he along with Chet Atkins,Jerry Reed ,Merle Travis,Doc Watson and Tommy Emanuel deserve so much more Credit than they get .I am so Lucky to have Seen and Heard one of the Worlds Very Best Guitarist Play Mister Doyle Dykes !!!

  • What's name of first song please?

  • You idiots who complain about the quality of the video, at least someone GOT this footage and was nice enough to post it up here for all to see. And second of all, I work for a Taylor dealer and not only is his DDSM acoustic one of the best I've ever played, the T5 is an amazing guitar and played through a good amp and with THAT kind of talent, you all should have nothing to complain about and should just be thankful you get to watch and enjoy this amazing guitarist.

  • I think the crackling is good indication this was a bad camera and an awful recording of this performance. I'm sure it would've sounded amazing Live!

  • Nice video. Nevermind the sound. Just see the Man and what he does.

    Thank you.

  • Doyle with God enhancement can play some Chet no problem!

  • i wanna learn woodpecker pickin

  • tommys better

  • kick ass

  • Jer I m having trouble posting you my email address at yahoo

  • Scales and arpeggios. Regret never learning them. Actually I take it back, would rather just watch this guy play. HA.

  • what i wouldn't give for those chops.

  • I haven't seen chops like this since the amazing Danny Gatton, may he rest in peace. But still, I have to agree with what some others here have said about his tone--too harsh and quacky. I blame Taylor. I have two Taylors and I love how they feel and play but they are damned quacky guitars. Doyle would be mesmerizing & invincible on a Gretsch 6120. Hybrids in general fail to sound like either a good electric or a good acoustic. Truly the worst of both worlds.

  • Awesome playing. Doyle is "doing it" ...Bang on the drum all day. Yeah... Dig it! The sound sucks. I blame the recording quality. It was recorded way too hot and that's what screws up the tone. Great performance though.

  • Can anyone tell me what's the name of the song started at 2:38 ?

    Thanks a lot.

  • Poor People of Paris. It's on the CD "The Essential Chet Atkins" - Tom R.

  • Seriously, he always has that 'aw-shucks' grin on his face when he finishes something like that :) You're my biggest inspiration Doyle! Keep doing what you're doing. :)

  • I'm willing to bet Doyle has stayed up day and night sometimes just to work out what he discovered and embraced upon. Theres no other way seems once you reach a level of playing every other riff falls into place and then makes it possible to do others as easy.

  • My God he's an awesome player but what's going on with his tone!? I've never liked his tone, even before the T5 days going back to his Taylor signature. Just way too much attack. No doubt he can play I just wish he'd go with a slightly less harsh tone. See Thom Bresh for an example. Both great players but I'll take Bresh, Chet, and Emmanuel's tone anyday.

  • Have too agree about the awful tone, even allowing for cheap camera. T5 don't help mind you.........an awful plank.

  • Really, guys, the tone is wonderful live. It was just the camera. You could check out "Tennessee Stomp" for a little better representation, but once you attend a live show you'll see what I mean. Thanks for stoppin' by. =]

  • @Jer1400 hey do you know the song he plays just after oh by jingo and before poor people of paris?

  • But, like you say, it's just Doyle's sound.

  • bresh and emmanuel use regular acoustic tones

  • wow wow

  • You notice at the beginning he says "T-5 stuff" before he says "Chet stuff," referring to his Taylor T-5 guitar. This fabulous instrument has a 5-way switch on the top that Doyle plays with all thru the song for different effects without a hiccup--fantastic!

  • To this you must say "awesome"

  • What a great player! Notice at 131 that he never missed a beat when he changed the switch on his guitar to go to a lower tone. That was brilliant.

  • Great playing. We can thank Merle Travis for originating this style and Chet Adkins for making it more popular. Now Dykes takes the style and brings it to the next level

  • I love how at the very end he seems to think, for a moment, that there should be something else to finish off the medley then suddenly realizes, 'that was great, why not?!'

  • just watchin his right hand picking is mind blowing!

  • The best fingerstyle picker anywhere, even Chet said "Have you heard Doyle Dykes Lately?". Doyle, you are my hereo!, even though my Taylor guitar has turned out to be a dissapointment.

  • Interesting sentiment.

I had a taylor for a while. Got rid of it and was happy I did. I've played about 100 of them. Can't get a single one that I like. The 4000 dollar ones are just as impersonal as the 400 dollar ones. I also quickly sampled Doyle vids here, and even after a dozen or so in 5 mins, not a single one of them had ANY bottom end, or rich tone. Tommy killed with the Maton in the same vid for tone. re:"The best": Scotty Anderson is a FORCE OF NATURE.

  • Taylor Guitars are generally too twangy for my tastes. For the same money as a middle of the road Taylor, you can have a Washburn or Alvarez that sounds much nicer.

  • Have you tried a Blueridge?

    seriously good tone.

I play some single notes on an impromptu end section for "Strawberry Fields" on here with a piano player. Tell me what you think of the tone.

  • I have an Alvarez. I'm never getting another steel string as long as I live. So nice.

  • It's not possible for fingers to move that fast! The clip that really blows you away is the one with Doyle and Tommy E. I think I saw smoke on that one. Thanks for sharing this!

  • I agree, Doyle and Tommy are my 2 favs!

  • strange when chets much better;P lol. tommy wish to play like chet did. saw in an interview. and its not happening;P but he is good

  • doyle is in the top 1% of all guitarist...and I saw him in person here in Saratoga Springs, and maybe in the top 1% of all people...what nice gentleman...I watched as every person walked up to him after the show and he is just as nice and as patient as can be, and used the person's first name each time, to me that is a small but significant thing. this man has every reason to be an arrogant person ala eddie van halen and hog his "secrets", but he shares his love of music. he leaves you inspired

  • To put Doyle's playing in perspective - a writer asked Chet once who he would pay to see play. Chet said "I'd pay to see Doyle Dykes." That's as good as it gets.

  • i actually had the pleasure of meeting a relative of his the other day at work and i played his custom shop t-5 and his 915 and man both were really sweet guitars. shua you are the man keep on pickin and tell doyle that i think he is the man.

  • This is an almost dreadful quality recording of a true legend. Some guitarists meet the Devil @ the Crossroads. Doyle met Christ and was filled with the Holy Spirit which resulted in his learning how to finger tap which really impressed ol' Chet Atkins who asked him who taught him to play guitar "like that". Doyle told Chet "God knows how to play the guitar!".

  • @quinoacat

I saw Doyle play at our little church in Hayward Ca. He gave his testimony and played about an hour. This video doesn't do justus for his skills but you get the idea.

He's a gentleman through and through and not to shabby on the guitar either ;)

  • @quinoacat dude...god didn't give him shit...decades of practice, passion, and a smart fuckin brain did....which has graced us with this awesome musican.

  • I love Doyle's playing and think he is so talented but his tone is not that good. His Taylor sounds like an Ovation. Way to tiny.

  • he swithes the tone about half way through, turns more mellow

  • his tone is dead on if you see him live, the video audio takes away from his tone alot

  • i dont like the kind of music, but man, im amazed, he's amazing!

  • vaya crack!

  • Doyle is one of the best alive today.

  • At 2:36 he starts playing "The Poor People of Paris (Jean's Song)," an old Chet favorite.

  • I've seen him live, and the Taylors are some of the sweetest sounding guitars I have ever heard.

  • Of course, great playing. Whoever records these with cam-digi type mics, its going to sound thinny, and not true to the instrument.

  • Hey COLTAC, Weak sound? What do you you expect from a home movie camera in the audience. No direct feed from the backline audio..

  • thats something else

  • I am a Chet style fingerpicker. I am curious what brand Doyle's guitar is. And also, what buttons he keeps changing throughout the performance.

  • Well, it's a Taylor Thinline 5-way guitar and the switch goes between 5 different pickup combinations. If you were curious, his regular guitar he plays is the Taylor DDSM. You'll see it a lot in the videos floating arund here. Hope that helps. :)

  • Thanks for your help!!! Every time I hear someone play like this it literally sends a chill down my spine. It took me about 5 years tolearn, but I think I've got it!!. I hope to have a video posted one of these days. Thanks for the help.

  • Cool, man. Hey if you remember, send me a little message to let me know when you get some videos up here. I'd love to check 'em out! Cheers. :)

  • Hey man!! I have three vids posted now. Bear with some of the mistakes. That's what happens when you take a break and sell all three of your guitars. The one in the vids is a cheapy from a friend, but it works.

  • 讚讚讚讚讚.......讚啦!!!!!!

  • Does anyone know thge names of all these songs? I know they are just bits and pieces.

  • thanks for telling me

  • I was telling Jer1400, not you. Sorry .

  • what are all the songs I hear oh by jingo salty dogs I know the third but I forgot the name. the others I don't know someone tell me

  • Well, I learned the name of the second one is "Three Little Words". :)

  • I was entertained..Thanks very much,it was great !

  • Great guitar player but terrible sound work..

  • I believe it's the model of guitar, Taylor. They always sound like this - tinny, kind of weak. They play well for melody driven stuff, however. I personally am not a fan, but others love them. I love the Chet performances. Amazing guitarist.

  • I hate musicians reserving the best seats for their retinue. I went to see van Morrison one time and the whole set of the front facing balcony was out of bounds for his retinue. This was never made clear at time of booking and seats were on a first come first served basis. I vowed never to go see him again and I haven't. I would probably forgive Doyle though as he is much more pleasant than Van.

  • Well, the artists themselves don't really have much to do with all that. This time it was just the people putting on the concert that had the front row reserved. I've sat front and center several times at Doyle's concert's - not more than 5 feet from the fellow. :)

  • Im getting the T5 Custom Koa in 2 weeks:)

  • Wow, man! That's cool. I played one in a store once... Blew me away. :D You'll have to post some videos of you playin' that thing! :) Cheers.

  • Much as I like Doyle -when you see Tommy onstage there really is little comparison. I have seen Doyle a number of times at these clinics, however. if I were to choose between two CD's I hadn't heard before - I would choose Doyle's as I feel that Tommy doesn't always come across on studio recordings for some reason....

  • I prefer Doyle Dykes then T.E.

  • Just saw Doyle in Irvine last night. I'd love to see him and Tommy get together and record. Doyle was awesome. You have to see him in person.

  • Every bit in Tommy's class, some actually prefer him and you have to meet him.

He's probably the most humble person on the planet considering his immense talent. That guitar is the most progressive forward thinking instrument I've seen since my birth. (50ish) You should jog down to the shop and see if someone will let you goof with one. Better still check Taylor website and watch the demo videos. Sick!!!

  • yeah 'poor people of paris' - i loved that

I dont like the guitar sound. awful looking gtr too (IMO)

and boy 'does he love himself' - not in the same class as 'Tommy'

  • That's just the camera... Crappy audio. See him live. :)

  • That's "Poor people of Paris" starting at 2:35

  • First song is: Oh By Jingo Oh By Jee.

Fantastic player! Just as good as TE

  • Awesome video! I know at 1:30_2:00 he plays "Three Little Words"

  • Thanks much!! Do you know the title at 1:59 to 2:34 ?

  • What is the title of 3rd song(1:59). I love it and am looking for Tab score.

  • Seems like he experimenting with different settings

on his guitar by constantly pushing the buttons.

Takes away from his playing... This is something that Chet would never do...

  • i disagree, hes changing the sound when he changes songs through the medely

  • Yeah, it was a Taylor demo and he was demonstrating the different tones he likes to use when playing a Taylor T5.

  • thanks for mentioning that this is a clinic performance

for Taylor. Which of his different tone settings do you like the best? I like the sound he gets with the

midrange slider down and Bass and Treble slightly

    boosted. peace

  • those 3 knobs are actually (from left to right) master volume, bass, treble - and on the top side theres the 5 way switch for diff pickup combos

  • He's a clinician for Taylor and is demo'ing the tonal range of the T5 he's playing. Trust me, he plays it straight just as much at other events.

  • hey jer are you going to be Tabing this 'chet stuff' medely?

  • Maybe someday; right now I'm taking a break from transcribing to learn a few tunes myself. :)

Seeing as it's really just a medley of Chet's songs and arrangements, though, you could probably just search online and get tabs for all of the original songs and then put them together in the same order. I'm pretty sure every songs of Chet's has been tabbed by someone by now. ;)

  • Was one of the songs (2:35) the Theme from the Moulin Rouge?

  • I was mistaken. The song @ 2:35 is The Poor People of Paris. See Chet play it at

    v=vczPgIhd-R4

  • 'Poor People of Paris' is the name

  • Sounds like he is playing Chet's version of Salty Dog

  • brill

  • Thanks so much! I am impressed that the video and audio are in perfect sync, what format do you use to upload it to youtube?

  • I just use .wmv format. :)

  • love it! got any more??
