In ref to LesHut's comment about the cape falling off. This sort of thing was common in low budget films. Columbia did not take the time to perfect their product as did Republic. These serials were issued four times a year and were used as incentives for theater owners to buy whole packages. You had to buy x number of films from a distributor in order to get what you wanted. Serials were considered "short subjects" just as two reel comedies, cartoons and travelogues were.
Honestly Officer, he's my "ward". We're semi-nude on the back seat of a car with my butler keeping watch in order to change into our crime fighting tights and masks...
@eonetim Funny comment but before Dr. Frederic Wertham came on the scene, followed by Mad Magazine's brillant satire, the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson was never questioned. It's what you want to read into it as symbolic. "Sometimes a pickle is nothing more than a pickle."
@ziggycat999 It's a flophouse, These were very common in the thirties and forties. A bum with 50 cents in his pocket could sleep on a flea bitten mattress, risk being bitten by rats and have your shoes stolen right off your feet by the guy next to you. In any case, it beat sleeping on a park bench and being arrested for vagrancy.
@atomicbear The design for all subsequent Alfred's was based on him. Before this, Alfred was a bumbling fat ex-actor trying to be a detective like them.
this is surprisingly well written and performed. These two guys have B and R down pat...funny, tough, a bit scary, loving every minute they get the upper hand.
Yes there is, but compared to the 1966 Batman, these didn't seem of much interest to people so I stopped. I guess I can get back into it now that I am near the end of the 1966 episodes.
I used to have these episodes on 8mm film as a young kid. My favorite part of this chapter was at 6:30 when Batman gets his cape knocked off. You can see it fall off the table. The scene has a cut to Alfred in the car, and then at about 6:41 the cut back shows he has his cape back on. I loved these old films.
This is a hell of a lot better than the Batman show with Adam West.

Alfred is watching like an eagle at The Blue Parrot because Robin has fowled up. Interesting ornithological theme here.
I like the gas-filled phone booth, so reminiscent of public phone booths after Saturday night.

I wonder why on the DVD the "next chapter" sequence was not included. Was it THAT offensive?

Surprised I didn't see the Penquin at the Blue Parrot. :)
Also those actors climbing the rope; don't think George Cloony could do that. :)

That kid playing Robin is GREAT. Pity Batman isn't. If we could have Batman from the '49 serial and Robin from this, it would be perfect.

The actor playing Alfred is well cast.
atomicbear 2 years ago 6
he is. but its interesting that before this movie came out in the comics Alfred was fat and comic releif.
after this serial came out Alfred lost weight and grew a moustach. this to make the charture look like the Alfred of this movie.
so i think its that the actor did so well in this movie that the comic book one was cast to play him.
