Just saw him with Black Dub in DC a few nights ago. This man is a genius. He's got more soul in his big toe than just about anyone else out there. I was moved so deeply.
@yoyomasta47 Actually Daniel Lanois wrote this song and released it in 1993, the Tea Party remade it, this is just a more recent version by Daniel Lanois.
Anyone check out Daniel's newest band Black Dub? They have some great live vids up on vevo. Definitely check out Ring the Alarm and I Believe in You!
@nmg18ismuzik I saw Black Dub last night at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. They were superb (even without the bass player-extraordinaire, Daryl Johnson -- I couldn't catch the replacement bassist's full name...Tio somebody, from Tijuana...but he was more than adequate). And, as a lifelong drummer, I am continually amazed at the drumming of Brian Blade. His signature playing is immediately identifiable.
Bottom line...How nice to witness great musicians at the top of their game.
Anyone here about his new band Black Dub? Got to see them perform live in NYC last week, they were awesome!! You can check out some of their videos on VEVO
Look for Daniel Lanois, he produced lot of stuffs:
The Joshua Tree - U2 in 1987 for example...
Worked with U2, Bob Dylan, Neil Youg, Willie Neilson, Peter Gabriel...
Made 9 albums himself, the 1st one in french, is from Quebec! He plan to make some folk album in french, about old songs and oral legends he said recently on TV.
Oh, he also did the ''The last Mohecan'' (Le dernier des Mohicans) soundtrack ...
I still keep coming here and listen to this wonderful version of this great tune. And it just keep on hitting me right between the eyes,- Daniel..... if you ever need a new band member, just call me.......
This tune should be played in schools and kindergardens every morning to let kids know what music is all about......... Wow. This is just a killer song in a great version.
This is such a beautiful song. Even though this is the original, I do prefer The Tea Party version, probably because I heard it before this one. A great song regardless of who performs it.
@stogma I respect the effort by Tea Party, but as a long-time Lanois fan, I prefer the vulnerable rawness of his version more. To each his own. I'm thrilled that other bands are performing his songs, and making them their own.
I think that Jeff Martin has a much richer voice than Daniel Lanois. I'm not saying this version is bad, rather both version ought to be judged on their own merit .
The point is, the guy WROTE this song.....sure, the Tea Party did it justice, but the bottom line is that this is HIS song, and this is an outstanding performance of it.
BjGard: "Tea Party was a much superior version but i really respect the original as well... "
I love The Tea Party version, but this one is growing on me, to a point where I am not sure which version is "better".
I suppose the point of this is that Daniel Lanois is a great producer because he is, in fact, a talented musician. I think this is one of the reasons why The Tea Party was such a successful band in Canada.
Tea Party was a much superior version but i really respect the original as well... Rarely does a classic get covered properly.. With such piles of ass disgraces like AFRICA and really anything by a rapper/ hip hopper
Superb!
