OMG what increlible sensitivity! even the smallest technical gesture brings something to the meaning of this masterpiece. Arrau is, very far away, the best interpreter of Liszt in the twentieth century.

A few play all the notes in all the right places, but only Arrau has made the piano, the pianist and the concert hall disappear. I see Liszt, playing alone at night, in a house deep in the Europe countryside, while the snow whirls against the windows and falls from the trees.

I wouldn't say Arrau understood Liszt the best. I think his playing is significantly different from Liszt's. I think Arrau does a great job of portraying emotions that Liszt wanted and his 12 recordings of the etudes are AMAZING. His Dynatmics are always precise and full of emotion.Fast pace doesn't matter, playing fast and breezy means absolutely nothing. Anyone can do that.

In regards to best interpretations of Liszt, it goes straight to Lazar Berman. Most underrated Liszt performer.

Not Arrau's best Liszt etude, and definitely not the best version of this one. Don't get me wrong, I love his playing on these pieces, but there are much better versions of this particular one.

Las maravillosas interpretaciones de Arrau sobre Liszt no tienen comparación, son de una profundidad, de una densidad emocional increíble... uno se introduce en la mente y el corazón de Liszt, se siente lo que él sintió cuando compuso estas maravillosas obras...esta en particular me hace sentir el frío del viento sobre la nieve y el profundo sentimiento de melancolía que sentía Liszt en ese momento.

Aucun artiste n'approche, même de très loin, cette interprétation. Non Arrau ne joue pas "trop slow". Regardez la partition. Lisez le commentaire de Cortot "ne pas méconnaître le sentiment douloureusement expressif qui s'attache à l'énonciation du motif mélodique, trop fréquemment négligé au profit des seules démonstrations d'une virtuosité exceptionnelle". En un mot écoutez. Arrau est tout simplement sublime.

People are too busy watching Berezovsky. It's a damn shame. NOBODY has ever approached this. I don't want to hear the usual "ugh..Arrau plays so slow". it's 10 times harder to do what arrau does here than just someone playing fast and loud. He understood liszt better than anyone else ever has. listen to his scales for instance. HE ACTUALLY PHRASES THEM! This is epic, embodying the experience of a lifetime.

@BlazeKenny you obviously didn't read the comments i made. If you did then you would know my radar for interpretational greatness is not based on the "therms" of tempo. I have 250 words to say why this is an amazing performance and if i wanted i could use 1,000 words. you know nothing about me or my depth as a musician regarding interpretation. if you had class you would write to me personally and i would be happy to discuss it with you. Somehow i think you prefer digs where the masses can see.

and he waited till he was 74 to record them. that alone speaks for itself and his depth as an interpreter of liszt's music is quite special. A merging of pianist and composer. Plus he learned them from Martin Krause, one of liszt's last pupils.
