Are any of you guys actually tankers? I was. BTW the APFSDS stands for Armor-Piercing, Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot. Get it? The sabot breaks away from the penetrator and is discarded.
Thats a HEAT guys , not a APFSDS .... the APFSDS is smaller and actually has something called the sabot . that is either invisible or does not exist in this example
Plus, it's not "a very dense metal" it's depleted uranium. Holy crap. I certainly hope that the people responding to this aren't actual tankers (like me) because if you are, you suck. Enough with the dis-information.
Actually, there is a SABOT round. Also a HEAT round and an MPAT round. HEAT is high explosive anti tank and MPAT is multipurpose anti tank. I should know since I recently retired from the US Army after spending 20+ years inside a tank and firing hundreds if not thousands, of each kind of tank round. By the way, APFSDS stands for armor-piercing-fin-stabilized-discarding-sabot. Thanks.
@vjiocco no... there's not really a thing such called a "SABOT round", there's an APFSDS, which is a round which HAS a SABOT... and this isn't one of them an APFSDS is very thin, much thinner than this round, and they DISCARD their sabot, which does not take place in this video... they are about the dimensions of a scaled up pencil, with fins attached to the end, and made of very dense, very strong metals, such as tungsten, or uranium, so that they will go through metal, and wreck havoc...
@nigleman lol chally 2's use a sabot that discards most of the casing to impart energy to the penetrator so yeah there is such a thing as a sabot , hence UK tank commanders yelling "sabot" for a tank killer ........ I was in the REME mate seen plenty of the things and the damage they cause :) ever been in the regs mate ? I think not :)
@movietow no, you're right, this isn't one, and they are a lot thinner than this... plus, they are made out of a single SOLID piece of very dense metal, and this quite obviously is more complicated than that, with folding fins and what not, and most likely a warhead on the end...
it's a u.s army missile fired from a m1a2 mbt, the same type the russians uses called reflex, u.s army should incorperate this tech in the NEXT m1a2/ M1A2/A MODEL with a new barrle and fire control, but our will be much better, the russ use missile because of the lack of long range fire control systems
@aarondhp20 Then perhaps you can tell me better: what is the exact type of shell is being used here? Is that a HEAT round? Also by fastest laser targetting system, do you mean the system that operates the laser or the laser itself? Since laser is light and we know how fast light travels? :D
@aarondhp20 Know the whole thing that you said. Except the .5-1.5 sec firing solution time. Thanks for the details though. Although have to say, isn't that all about processing power and program of a system as oppose to awasome technological advancement that we have faster firing solution? Just curious.
@aarondhp20 The APFSDS "arrow" has a much smaller diameter than the barrel from which it is fired, in this video it's almost the same size, the other problem is that the projectile is spinning, and spin reduces the armour penetration of the sabot. Fins on the APFSDS are fixed and don't deploy (the fins in the video have greater diameter than the barrel). Either you lied about being in the army, or you really suck at your job. So either enlist or learn something about your job....
@aarondhp20 Depends on which type of Leopard 2, the older models yes but not the newest ones (A5/A6) which use the L55. M1 Abrams use the M256, which is a license built copy of the older L44.
True but considering this video was uploaded in 2008 I would wager it's probably the older variant. Can't be sure without seeing the hull, but thank you for the good info.
Russian cannon. Look at the heat sink, it's far forward. T-80 2A46 gun by the looks of it firing a 3VOF36 test HE round with six fin stabilizers, much longer than the 22.
NATO rounds have eight shorter fins or mortar-like extremely short fins. The guns have heat sinks near the middle. For a Rheinmetall 120mm gun, the heat sink is basically touching the assembly and this round looks nothing like a DM12A2 which has eight small mortar-like fins.
Its a MRM-KE called X-Rod. Mediun Range Munition-Kinetic Energy for use in BLOS Beyond Line of Sight aplications. It uses a GPS to help reach the target with accuracy and has a propelent to reach supersonic speed. It ignite when the video ends, but you can see this munition in Future Weapons series.
btw is fired from a 120mm smoothbore 250m cannon. Not an 105mm.
hmmm, i guess i was wrong, idk about this new shit, i was in an old school tank unit 2-70th Armor in Ft. Riley Kansas, Which is now 1-63 CAB, all our NCO's Are Old school tankers that all got action in desert storm
The M1 had a rifled 105 using brass casings... the m1a1 had a 120mm smoothbore that used a combustable cellulose/paper casing. the m1a1 and a2 variants are what our forces use today.
If you are a crewman for US ARMY, can you tell me please, what kind of munition is this one. I know it's a BLOS supersonic rocket propeled munition. But what is his name? Thanks
The barrels have cuts inside, the cuts are called "rifling" and it imparts a spin to bullets, missles or rockets- black powder weapons spin about 1 in 48" or so, 308 bullet spins about 1 in 12 inches, the M16/M4 round is about 1 turn in 8" or so
M1A1 fires a APFSDS-T discarding sabot "anti-tank" shell, with the "sabots" seen peeling away shortly after the 120mm shell leaves the barrel. The smaller, 12 pound, 40mm penetrator thus travels at a higher speed (up to 5,000 feet per second), and can penetrate more armor when it hits an enemy tank. The high speed round hits its target with force equal to an eleven ton truck hitting something at a speed of 112 kilometers an hour.
Probably a HEAT round, fired from a rifled cannon, with driving bands to prevent the warhead spinning. The apfsds penetrator doesnt spin like that, nor does it have a break away fuse at 0:14
according to a nother video its a peace to make the round more snugg in the barrol and when it leaves the barrol it breaks off to reduce wind friction
wow, i didnt notice the first time i saw this but holy shit how the hell did the camera man follow a tank round through the air for so long. thats skills.
You can also see thât the rocket passes very near the bullet. if the camera was far away you cant see the bullet from front and a bit from behind. the mirror is shaking a bit at the end of video. why should they zoom with a cam and at end shake the screen?
are u fucking stupid? how did u though that someone could trace a round? jesus...it's a remote controlled camera with a motor, programed to turn at the speed and direction of the round being fired....

I have a few questions:
1.Whats the explosion that happens on the projector several "seconds" out in the movie?
2.What type of ammo is this? and what does it do?
3. Is that one hell of a camaraman? or is the projectile realy a fat slow flying duck?
4.it looks like only half the projectile is spinning- is that also the ral case?
