Wait a minute.... Is Mike doing Kick, Floor, Floor, Kick? i could have swore it was K,K,F,F when i briefly watched this before ahaha. If so, i have no clue how I missed that and that would explain my annoyance in wondering how in the heck he does this so fast. Btw since i couldnt get the kicks fast enough it had me trying to do heel/toe for my Kick/Kick which is a pain... hahah
@HCMetalhead2010: It's Floor-Floor-Kick-Kick. Really it's just a double stroke roll between your right hand and your right foot. Hope that helps my friend.
MIke Johnston, whats up man? I just got your limerick book in the mail and love it! your a great drummer and are such an inspiration. Best of luck man, im sure this book will really improve my playing
Wow Mike, not sure if your're gonna read this but this just transformed my drumming not only can i get this with my right foot but i also developed it with my left foot for MORE bass in my fills, Your are one of my biggest inspiration to keep learning new things on this amazing istrument. Andrew
Mike a theory that I get from this is to take that beat and add actual double bass. Do you think it would have a triple bass effect? I think that would be a sick effect to work at for some good death meatl. Just theory. Let me know. I love your vids. Help me with fills and everything. Thanks! peace!
I'm never going to give up playing double bass, but I love ideas like this; playing a double stroke roll between the floor tom and bass drum is of course completely different to using the bass pedals. So cheers for this Mike!
This guy has one f the best sounding kits on you tube and he is really good. Just proves one does not need two kick pedals. Unless of course you can do something interesting like Chambers, old Scott Travis or the master Simon Phillips. You also can learn how to make a tiny kit sound enormous. 14" floor tom? That is genius!
Hey Mike, I'm really digging all your lessons. I've learnt so much from just watching you and experimenting and adding my own feel to it. I was just wondering what heads you were using on the 14inch tom in this vid. I just acquired one and am having trouble getting that nice low boom like yours. I currently have g1s on it.
Keep on drumming and teaching. You're doing great things for the amazing family we are part of.
@drumteacher76 Mike! Sorry to bother you again, but I came up with a question, a doubt.
Whenever I start playing, everything is great and I can play fluently. But after 2 hours, for example, as I hit the cymbals, my hands get tighter due to tiredness.
Is there a proper way to hit cymbals? A efficient way to hit cymbals without effort so I can maintain my stamina a bit longer?
I've been playing for 5 months now, and I have learned a TON from your videos. You have a great teaching style, and it's very easy to pick up what you are explaining. I'm off to work on this. I read a comment about "Heel/Toe" bass drum technique. Is there a video here that explains that?
hey mike, when you started opening the hi hat together with the "double bass", isn't it just a double stroke roll between your hands ? ( if you ignore the feet )
I'm a double bass guy, and I STILL use this technique for the high hat claps. Alternatively, I'll use my left heel for the hat and toe for the bass pedal, so I can clap and play. Though... It's sort of a pain in the ass.
jow mike.. i'm not from america.. but from a country Suriname.. i have been following your lessson's recently and BOOEMMMM!!!! this rock's man! i think you'r a great teacher and that you'r doing a good job and a good thing for drummer's all over the world... you'r an inspiration bro... and if you can do all that.. than why cant i!!! any way.. great vid.. and thanks for everything up till now!! maybe i'm gonna be one of the famouse drummers one day.. and it's gonna be thanks to you!!! see ya!
Hey Mike, just a question about bass drum dynamics:
I use Axis pedals - I play a lot of extreme metal - but in situations when a double pedal isn't possible, I want to be able to have a fast single bass as well. One problem I encountered is the sound of doubles on the bass. To put it in onomatopoeia (?) it sounds more like duh-DUH, with the first note being much quieter, how would you suggest changing this? the dynamics are fine with heel toe, but sometimes I won't always have longboards...
another awesome lesson, I'm always so amazed how you make a simple set up sound more and you find ways to be creative. I'm learning double bass right now but feel the same way....gotta have that hi-hat groove in there still.
holy crap your drums sound so fat!!!!!! i love it!! you have inspiring vids mike i hope you do your thing for the rest of your life cuz you've inspired me to do so.
I play a lot of real double bass and I still see a lot of potential in this concept .. unlocks quite a few doors for creativity .. going from normal double bass to "fake" double bass at the same speed and throwing in high hat barks .. switching back and forth
I got this down well enough (around 90BPM is currently my threshold) and decided if Mike, Bonham, and Chad Szeliga (Breaking Benjamin) can get double bass sounds without using a double kick why can't I? So I detached my slave pedal from my double kick and refuse to go back to it unless it's necessary (i.e. I pick up playing death metal for some reason.) Great lesson Mike. Thanks a million.
Instead having to change both of your hands positions, why not just play the basic rock beat open-handed? Probably be a lot easier, as long as your left hand can chop out 8ths.
Why does everybody ask what technique is he using. Go and practice I promise ur foot can do it to. Tony royster once said in an interview my foot didn't develop and do what I wanted it to do until I stopped trying to do certain techniques and other peoples techniques and just let his foot figure out what it was going to do for what he wanted to play!!!!
hey brother i love your videos ! great lessons , youre a great drummer and teacher, God bless you .. one question, do you use heel-toe or slide technique?
Man how do you move your hand and feet coordination that fast? I been practicing paradiddles, rrll, rlrl and I still can't manage to get up to that speed, but good video!
Hey Mike, in honor of you telling us to " do something with it", i decided to come up with a double bass pattern using just my single pedal using heel toe. I know this isn't what you mean by do something with it, but it allows me to have even more freedom because I now have 3 free limbs. Its only a 20 second clip, i attached it as a video response. Hope ya dig.
Hey Mike, Just a quick congratulations on all your success; you deserve every single ounce of it brother! Thank you soooooo much for helping sooooo many drummers. You are greatly appreciated and respected.
Wait, all the 'numbers' and '&'s are on the floor tom and the 'e's and 'a's are with the bass. Then why did you say double-stroke? Cause that would be '1 e' on floor tom and '& a' with bass. Or is the double-stroke just for this particular thing?

@oscarmvl remember, mike is a freakin master dude. really slow to him is "wtf?" to us sometimes. practice bro. go super slow and learn it right, don't try to sound like mike johnston right out the box or you'll never get it. it is more difficult than it looks.
@thelasrado change your bass drum heads! Tune them! tlc. your question asking "how do I make my floor Tom sound cool" is an opinion. everybody likes different sounds! I had a pearl forum kit. They sound ok for a beginner kit if u tweak everything

It felt good. Everyone work on this! It comes in handy!
Hey, Mike, I have been following your videos since your first one, and I love them all. I like that you're a fan of heavy music. You should check out my most recent drum video. I would appreciate it. @TheLastJrummer yo man thats pretty cool that travis checked out your vid, hes an excellent drummer...and im not mike but i went over and checked it out and it was really good man, youre a really solid player...
you should make a video on how to play the amen break because i really want to know since i have looked alot of places but i cant find one so tach us how to do the amen break
@drumteacher76 yea but why can't you add like for example little examples of what is on your site? like you had this blushda video up, and you got a pack of 6 blushda videos, so why not leave the youtube thing up, because i wanna learn this youtube stuff free
pshhh you said it is impossible to keep an ostinato with the hi-hat if you use a double bass... wrong! George Kollias does it... ha i'm just messing with you man, cool lesson!
Ey man, u've already uploaded stuff like this, but this time, the quality of the vid is better and we can say lots of things like how awesome ur kit is and that we will marry it and crap like that, u know :)
Thx for also uploading stuff in Youtube, because at the moment I haven't really the possibility to watch ur stream on ur website. When I will be back at home, i will definately do that ;)

@drumteacher76 Yeah it is a repeat of "watch?v=Q4ZUPEgbzu0"! But don't take it down, I think its a wonderful reflection of how far you've come and what you've achieved in the last four years! It's so great to see you're humble begginings compared to what you got going on now, and I doubt there's an educator on earth who deserves it more, Mike. Keep the good stuff coming!
@ClarkeTheBoss He hasn't. If you are subscribing to the live lessons you can compared it to the double bass with one foot parts, except for the open hihats... i think..
And some of the 120+ videos are not only on mikes channel but also on the aquarian channel..
Was totally expecting you to plug you're new sticks! - great lesson though - the double stroke on floor/bass is enough to seriously teach someone something nevermind the wee high hat riff helping independence, you're the man Mike!
@drumteacher76 Dont take it down! The only other ones that I saw was your Drum Lab video forever ago, and your clinic with Dante Roberson. This one has higher quality.
Thanks for all your teachings Mike, I hope to sign up for your live lessons soon.
@ClarkeTheBoss It does seem mighty familiar to me. As a matter of fact, I am checking my walkman, and I do have it. Mike, in my view, you havent changed your teaching style one bit, as this is an older video. Still amazing stuff nonetheless! Keep up the great stuff Dude!
@pisoscure06 Grab some sound isolation headphones, like the Vic Firth SIH1's. They only run about 50-60 bucks new, and give you the same effect, allowing you to play a little tighter since you actually ENJOY what you hear (assuming it's a shitty-to-low-to-mid-end kit and isn't all that decent, or your toms are improperly tuned, etc.) Plus, they protect your ears. (As if that part wasn't already blatantly stated haha) :P
One day Mike, one day, I will eat your brains and then I will become the drumteacher76 that you built up to epic proportions. Ok j/k, but thanx for the upload, just like every other video you post, this has been extremely helpful. tyvm.
hey mike im used to having my bass doing 1 a 2 a 3 a 4 a like in a samba. is there an exercise you use to put it in this kind of context? whenever i try it i always put the emphasis on the second note instead of the first cause im so used to playing it leading into a main beat and it doesnt flow. any ideas?
hey mike can you send me one of your old bass pedals, mine litterally fell apart. i will pay shipping:) im begging. i play in a church band and i have no pedal:(
He put this up a couple of years ago but im sure there was a lot of people who didnt even mess with it the first time so maybe they will this go round.
dude can you show us single pedalers how to roll streams of notes and how you do it and how fast you can etc dude, also some double bass sounding single bass patterns just hat snare kick would really show your foot speed dude i think we are all dying to see this
MIKE........ or anyone....hey what suggestion do you have to be albe to do the double right hand(RR)? even double foot? I cant do it anywhere neer 50 bpm. i always want to hit single. HELP!!
Could you do something on the bass drum technique? I recall the Nelly/Deftones vid you did, and during the Nelly section the bass drum stuff was shocking. And I'm still baffled as to what's going on in that cover.
Wait a minute.... Is Mike doing Kick, Floor, Floor, Kick? i could have swore it was K,K,F,F when i briefly watched this before ahaha. Don't take this down! I really like this repeat since it showed how amazingly far you've come after in just four years.

@drumteacher76 What metronome are you using? I like the sound.

When I will be back at home, i will definately do that ;)
Btw what is the max bpm u can play that on? ;)

Much love!

any tips for improving the tone of your floor tom for this? Your sound for this pattern is very consistent but my kit just sounds off

Wouldn't it be easier to always keep the left on a high hat in this groove? Like open-handed style?

@ClarkeTheBoss He hasn't. If you are subscribing to the live lessons you can compared it to the double bass with one foot parts, except for the open hihats... i think..
And some of the 120+ videos are not only on mikes channel but also on the aquarian channel..

Was totally expecting you to plug you're new sticks! - great lesson though - the double stroke on floor/bass is enough to seriously teach someone something nevermind the wee high hat riff helping independence, you're the man Mike!

Is it hard reaching your rack tom when you have it set up like that? because that would make it about 24" away from you wouldn't it?

This really only works if you have a nice sounding floor time with no ring. I doubt i could have this same effect on my kit.,
pisoscure06 1 year ago
@pisoscure06 Grab some sound isolation headphones, like the Vic Firth SIH1's. They only run about 50-60 bucks new, and give you the same effect, allowing you to play a little tighter since you actually ENJOY what you hear (assuming it's a shitty-to-low-to-mid-end kit and isn't all that decent, or your toms are improperly tuned, etc.) Plus, they protect your ears. (As if that part wasn't already blatantly stated haha) :P
m0ns13ur 1 year ago
@m0ns13ur Yeah, I actually do that now. I really like the way my cymbals sound that way as well.

hey mike im used to having my bass doing 1 a 2 a 3 a 4 a like in a samba. is there an exercise you use to put it in this kind of context? whenever i try it i always put the emphasis on the second note instead of the first cause im so used to playing it leading into a main beat and it doesnt flow. any ideas?

Could you do something on the bass drum technique? I recall the Nelly/Deftones vid you did, and during the Nelly section the bass drum stuff was shocking. And I'm still baffled as to what's going on in that cover.
