Thank you. This documentary was extremely helpful in understanding the DADA movement. Equally helpful, if not moreso in conjunction with the video, was your description. Thank you for taking the time to enlighten us. I do wish some you-tubers would grow up.
dada is art and dada is not art. dada is dada. anti art is pro art. from dada came surrealism, or against dada. arguments perssist. from surrealism came socialism and also sell out. from that came eventually situationism. from that came punk. dada is the void and dada is the everything. the ultimate rebellion in art, but dada is art, its artists claimed themselves artists and birthed conceptual art. the art of the idea. more was written about dada than drawn or painted. tristan tzara was a poet.
Dadaism was NOT art. it was NOTmeant to make sense. It was a way of defying the social conformities within society, a direct effect of the First World War. It's described as an ANTI-art. It was amazing and said so much, with so little.
@sarahceee13 it was many artists and they didnt agree. thats why breton formed surrealism. some were pro art some were anti art. some wanted to make sense and some wanted to make super sense or non sense. many anti forms really just are dissapointed with the original forms so they go anti because the original is not being what it should be. anti art ultimately cares about art or it would just be football.

Well, wether it's about degenerates or not, there is one thing I know: people hate each other for being stupid. And we all are stupid, aren't we?! So, that's what dada is about.
I challenge the view that this was an anti-art movement, as well as the idea that its purpose was destruction and demoralization. There is actually a paradox present here. Given that what was left to use for art was mostly debris, as a result of WWI, the Dadaists took what they could find and made something that requires deep context and understanding of all that came before it in the 19th century to understand. Constructing something from ruins has an aesthetic beauty to it, yes?
I completely agree saying that Dada was anit-art and bent on demoralization really puts it in a bad light.
Rather it challenged us to redefine our meanings of those words, shake people from their complacency and try and give them a different outlook on the world
Would you say that 'breakdown" is a better word for it? Also, I surely agree with the idea that it shook people out of their complacency. I had a most valuable Art History class this past semester, and fortunately learned that there is so much more to Art than what I see when I go to the art gallery (I probably had a sense of this idea, but until this class, if you asked me, I couldn't find the words to say it like this.) If there's one thing I've learned in life is that people LOVE complacency.

I challenge the view that this was an anti-art movement, as well as the idea that its purpose was destruction and demoralization. There is actually a paradox present here. Given that what was left to use for art was mostly debris, as a result of WWI, the Dadaists took what they could find and made something that requires deep context and understanding of all that came before it in the 19th century to understand. Constructing something from ruins has an aesthetic beauty to it, yes?

Would you say that 'breakdown" is a better word for it? Also, I surely agree with the idea that it shook people out of their complacency. I had a most valuable Art History class this past semester, and fortunately learned that there is so much more to Art than what I see when I go to the art gallery (I probably had a sense of this idea, but until this class, if you asked me, I couldn't find the words to say it like this.) If there's one thing I've learned in life is that people LOVE complacency.
